at the time of this interview Nakahodo-sensei was between 84 and 86 years old. today I trained a bit with him at Yomitan dojo (he visited) and he is exactly the same!

Sensei Nakahodo and sensei Yonomine were my favorites when I trained there. Because I had a difficult time walking after working out at their dojos. I associated my discomfort with learning. Go figure.

awamori..... alcohol keeps the blood thinned healing bruising and thinning blood clots internally... very important for the conditioning of the body to keep it healing, My sempai didn't drink much, he died a few days after a tourniment when a blood clot moved from his messed up shin to his brain.... so remember young ones, the right amount can be vital.

"Foreign robbers" is a very wide and misleading way of speaking. It can lead some Japanese people to fear foreigners in general. It also assumes that there aren't Japanese robbers in Japan. It is a discriminatory way of speaking. Be concrete. For example, American soldiers who get drunk and become criminals. I'm Spanish. By saying "foreigners" they include all non-Japanese people like myself. I don't like the usual Japanese way of talking about foreigners in general, as if all non-Japanese people were the same. And in this context it seems that the local hero is beating the "people from outside". Like I said, it is misleading and it fosters racism towards the non-Japanese. Say the nationality or better, simply say "robbers", why the specification that they are non-Japanese? I'm here to watch a video about karate, not to feel insulted as a non-Japanese. I have lived in Japan 9 years and I never robbed anybody. Not all the foreigners living in Japan are bad people. Not all are the same.

One thing is for certain, when your dealing with traditional Okinawan karate, the old guys with high rank really are that good - they don't get promoted just because they've stuck around for a long time . They have to at least maintain that level, because the next highest rank is striking them as hard as he/she can - and that's really hard. They also have to have the power to help the higher ranks that are lower than them grow by striking them hard enough that it's a little more than they've handled before - and that's really hard as well.
