I love this pattern. Thanks for sharing it with us. Can I use pinking shears for the curves instead of making triangles?
@OKSew474
@OKSew474 Ай бұрын
Hi! You can definitely use pinking shears for the curves in your fabric/vinyl if you don’t cut too close to your stitch line; however I would not recommend pinking shears to help shape curve of the zipper as you run a greater risk of it unraveling. If you do decide to try it I would be liberal with the fray check and/or a lighter to seal the edges but the zipper tape integrity will be better maintained with small snips than pinking shears.

Hi Nicole, Thank you for sharing this pattern! I was wondering if you (or anyone else) has experienced issues with their zipper tape fraying after regular use. I've always heard not to snip into your tape, and even with melting and fray check, it makes me nervous!
@OKSew474
@OKSew474 Ай бұрын
Hi Amanda! I have not had any trouble, making sure to keep my snips about 1/8-3/16” and applying fray check, but it does matter what the weave of your zipper is like. This video from designer Spencer Ogg has a great explanation that may reassure you, it is well worth the watch: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGTLZmScoN6CpJYsi=14eNyIaoLn2au9-5

@OKSew474
@OKSew474 7 ай бұрын
Thank you Susan! I use 1/8” double sided tape, this is the one I get: a.co/d/7Yv1ITv The needle type will vary depending on your specific machine and the materials you are using, so I definitely recommend experimenting on scraps before starting a new project, but I almost always use an 8/12 universal needle with success on my machine so that is what I start with; then if it is not working for thicker layers of vinyl I will switch up a 9/14 microtex needle.

Thank you! I get my cork tags from AllThisWood on Etsy, my colored tags were printed on a 1 yard cut of vinyl by K&A custom fabrics and I cut the individual tags with a rotary cutter. Both have their place - I like the cork for bigger/more labor intensive/expensive bags, the colored tags are very affordable per tag so they are perfect for small items where it is hard to absorb that cost.

What needle 'type' and size do you use with the Mara 100? thank you - great tutorial.
@OKSew474
@OKSew474 4 ай бұрын
I perhaps surprisingly use a universal 12/80 needle for almost all of my sewing. I experimented with many different needle types & sizes and for my particular machine that is what has consistently given me the best result. I used bigger and/or sharper needles as is often recommended for bags and especially vinyl, but none gave me as good of a result as a boring old organ needle. I definitely suggest experimenting with similar material type & thickness to work out what works best for you, it can be so variable!

@OKSew474
@OKSew474 4 ай бұрын
Marine vinyl works well! Up to a millimeter thick should be easy enough to work with, thicker than that it will depend on your experience, thinner than marine vinyl will still work but be less structured and may be better suited to one of the lined versions.

Oh no!! Snipping the zipper will cause zippers to fray and pull out of the seam. I strongly suggest never doing that. Otherwise, this is a fabulous pattern! Thank you for sharing!
@OKSew474
@OKSew474 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! It is certainly optional to snip the zipper but in order to get the shape I was going for and have an even zipper I felt it was necessary for this pattern. You are absolutely correct, snipping the zipper can cause it to fray, especially those horrible striped ones 😱, but thankfully with short snips and the fray check I haven’t had any problems with the minimal amount of stress on the zipper in this pattern or those from other designers where snipping is called for in any bags I have made over the years. 🤞
