I was watching Close a Encounters today and when I saw the Columbia logo and, funnily enough, immediately thought you should do an episode on the studio. Love this series!

Filling in the blanks for you: The 1993 fanfare was composed by Jonathan Elias, who has also had other clients in entertainment, broadcasting, and advertising. Big fan of this series.

Me too. Note, there are also three variants of the Columbia Pictures fanfare. One variant is played by an orchestral score and a piano kzbin.info/www/bejne/foaYXqera69_rsk One is played on a synthesizer kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6a6dmOdqZWkjsU And then one version combines the orchestral version, and the synthesized version together! This variant can be heard in John Carpneter's: "Vampries". kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYDRn2OmZ9qHgac

I personally put the Sunburst in the same category as the Big W, despite deviating from the logo, the miraculous animation, and fanfare, make it iconic in my eyes.

Nice history of the logo. There's one thing that I forgot to throw in there, there was also a "Sunburst" logo which was used for the home video division back in 1979 as Columbia Pictures Home Entertainment. It starts with the same animation as it was before, and then the words "Columbia Pictures Home Entertainment Presents" appeared on the screen instead of "Columbia Pictures" rather than backing away, but it kept frozen for a couple seconds until it fades out. In addition, there was also an orange "Sunburst" logo for a TV division back in 1976 through 1982, but I remember seeing this logo when it was at the end of "Barney Miller" when this logo was a freakout. By the 1980's where was also the same torch lady was also used for a TV division, but thankfully they added the Coca-Cola byline on there, but it remained until 1987, but in the movies, there was no Coke byline on there, because they tried to avoid it due to product placements. "Leonard Part 6" was one example of using product placements in movies, but the Columbia logo 1981 through the latter half of 1987 doesn't have any that there was no Coca-Cola since it was part of the deal. BTW, the Screen Gems "S From Hell" makes an appearance, because it was the first TV division for Columbia Pictures and it remained until 1973 when it was renamed to Columbia Pictures Television where it featured the CPT "Pretzel". And also, "Jack and the Beanstalk" was the first animated musical film for Columbia Pictures in 1976, but it did used the 1974 Columbia logo with the "Columbia Pictures Industries" byline, but the poster showed the "Sunburst" logo since it didn't started around mid-1976. It was an anime feature length when it was originally produced in Japan, but it was released on VHS by RCA/Columbia Home Video and later released by another company, but the Columbia logo was removed from the DVD releases.

I like me a good logo. Hypes me up for the film, a good deal of them are aesthetically pleasing, they cling to me like cellophane, not fake plastic submarines, etc. Worms, Sunburst and those Gulf + Western Paramountains are my personal faves - I dig that '70s New Hollywood aesthetic. Feels like the dawn of something new - not so much the dawn of film itself, but the dawn of a really interesting era that, despite its problems, churned out many a great movie. Also, they help me sleep at night.

You bet-- I recently saw a really good Columbia film from 1979 called The China Syndrome (that having Jane Fonda, Jack Lemmon and Michael Douglas, among others), from a region-free Blu made by a British label called Indicator (Powerhouse Films), and outside of the film itself, the main attraction was indeed that it had Columbia's Sunburst/Abstract Torch logo of the time (albeit, on this one, the logo was silent [whereas ordinarily it would have the familiar jingle by Suzanne Ciani]; still, it was a marvel to have that Columbia logo for the first time on a DVD or Blu).

Notice at 18:54, this logo with the byline was also shown in the 1976 animated musical "Jack and the Beanstalk". I saw the whole movie on YT and it looks good, but not as bad as previous versions, but there was no Columbia logo at the beginning. The same logo that I remember was from "Emmanuelle", a 1974 porno film along with many sequels afterwards.

I wish that the music at 20:02 should've used it for the 1980's Gaumont logo which fits really well. I've seen the Gaumont logo from the 1980's which was kinda resembling the Columbia "Sunburst" logo. You know, the "Flying Daisy" coming I and the Gaumont logo appears and zoomed back until the logo pulls far away and fades to black. You get the idea.

The only one I recognize is the one with the banana being from Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, but some of the others look really cool, like that silent one in black and white with TV artefacting.

Is it bad to say I liked the 1970s Warner Bros. Saul Bass Big "W" \\``` and Paramount's Blue Mountain logos better than the Columbia Sunburst logo? Both are good logos, I liked the fact they ditched the orchestral arrangement for a 70s modern synthesizer styled- fanfare. Dont get me wrong i dont mind that logo, but the 1993 and 2006 Columbia logos are my favorites.
