Great job ! My life story in fact, I had Islanders season tickets in 91-93. I split them with a roller hockey coach in College Point, Queens who asked me to. I signed the petition against the logo change (8:30) sitting somewhere in the 300 level seats at Nassau Coliseum, after sitting in the last row of MSG's blue seats for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals in 1994 wearing a New York Islanders original logo starter jacket. Thank you for including video of the roller blading players (4:20), the historical accuaracy of this video, the next stop for those kids on skates at this time was usually a Sega Gensis / Super Nintendo console that offered 4-way play on NHL 94. True hockey Nirvana, if you were 19 years old like I was. The most loyal of New York Islanders fans sat in section 329 at the Nassau Coliseum for home games. A lot of those guys are from Staten Island. Post dynasty, a good number of New York Islanders fans came from the surrounding areas of Queens, the boros, etc. simply because they did not want to root for the Rangers, or admired the great players and teams of the New York Islanders dynasty. Thank you for a great video, and keep in mind (Rangers Fans) the New York Islanders were at one time the greatest franchise in pro sports, and the envy of the sports world. The last North American sports franchise to win 4 consecutive championships.

Nah, the late 90's had some absolutely brutally bad uniform changes. Anyone with any understanding of graphic design will tell how awful most of the changes were. Uniforms traditionally tried to say a lot with very little, then all of a sudden it's like owners hired their 7 year old grandkids to design uniforms. Tacky.
@danny9405Күн бұрын
Islander fan here. The logo is still very much polarizing but most have come around to it. The real problem with the uniform is that it completely erased the look of an already historic team from only a decade previous. Had this look been released as an alternate uniform and under more a more prosperous product on the ice at the time, this uniform would t have been so hated. For me personally, I was a kid in the 90’s, I remember people weren’t thrilled. Now, most of the fans in their 30’s and 40’s (and younger) grew to appreciate it and wear it like a badge of honor of sorts. It’s retro, it’s hip, it’s collectible, and it’s part of the history. I love it now, but not more than our original logo.

Rebrands are tough. The problem is that rebrands are lead by marketing experts who are rarely fans of the game or the team and think of a sports logo purely as a marketing tool, like any other product to be sold. They rarely understand that a sport's team is part of the fans ' cultural heritage. You can't treat it like Starbucks or Home Depot.

In 1994, the Devils, despite being a championship caliber team were still struggling to connect with their fan base. They were third in the market behind the Islanders even while being in the conference final in 1994 and and winning the cup in 1995. They were actually planning a move to Nashville while winning that cup. Imagine going through all four rounds of the playoffs and not even trying to sell season plans for the following year. Fortunately for Devils fans the move fell through. And of course the Devils were run in a super traditional top down way by Lou Lamerillo, who was not just in charge of hockey ops, he was in charge of everything from the hot dogs to the arena staff, to building the team. And he was also in charge of the almost non existent marketing. But they had a classic logo crest that has remained exactly the same since it debuted in 1982. Of course...where did Lamerillo end up? You guessed it. Long Island. I guess after all this they wanted a proven record of incredible stubbornness in marketing.

However, I started watching hockey in 1995 and always prefered that jersey as there was many modern interesting jerseys throughout the 1990's, as teams tend to return to much classic designs, as the Sens, Pens, Flames and others tend to wear their early 1990's jerseys, which is cool too. Now that I see it back again I understand that the back of the jersey can look horrible to some people with the waves and all that, but for kids outside NY it was fun back then.

No need to bring Wayne Gretzky into this, he was nowhere near the 1994 Stanley Cup. As a Canucks and Gretzky fan I wouldn't have been as disappointed in Game 7. I didn't riot as I had left Vancouver for a job in Winnipeg during Round 2 but I get it, that was heartbreaking. Mark Messier wasn't very well liked in Vancouver, Wayne had a lot of fans there. Wayne was a Ranger in 1996 after a short stint in St. Louis. Mark Messier, if he wasn't already the most hated man in Vancouver when he became the Canucks Captain in 1997 he certainly was by the time his horrible 4 years of no-playoffs tenure in the city was over. Missing the playoffs during a rebuild is forgivable, it happens to every team, but he took Wayne Maki's #11 to wear himself, Wayne died of brain cancer in 1974 and the Canucks unofficially retired his jersey, that was a sh!tty move, very disrespectful and unprofessional. If you were living in Vancouver during Messier's run as a Canuck you would see quite a few unhappy fans wearing #11 Canuck jerseys with "MAKI" on them instead of "MESSIER", my buddy Rob had one.

Pickett, Maloney, Milbury, Spano, Milstein, Gluckstern and the teams terrible arena deal killed the dynasty. There was hope when Charles Wang and Sanjay Kumar bought the team, but that faded when they kept Milbury as GM. As far as changing the jersey, it was a desperate move to change their image. Folks who defend this garbage could use an introductory course on graphic design. When it comes to both logos and uniforms, you should strive to emphasize certain colors and details but make sure not to overdo anything to the point that the eye will be overwhelmed. And the design should have well balanced colors and geometry. The Islanders new look violated of basic principle of a good look. The colors and shapes are not proportioned well, and suddenly there's a stupid new logo apparently designed by a child or a stoned teen dominating the jersey.

As a logo, the "Fisherman" logo mabey is not better then the original "Islanders" logo BUT-BUT what is for sure, the wave jerseys WAS and STILL are the BEST they have ever worn! The Islanders logo looks good but the jerseys are just SO BORING to look at. They have had some interesting jerseys like the black/silver one, but overall kept the same boring one. Crying out loud, the reverse retro jerseys have not even been a "trying" case. If Islanders had any sence today, they would easily do the 3 following; 1. Start to use the wave jerseys again like in 1996-1998 both home and road including the 2nd logo, the "lighthouse" as shoulder logos. 2. Bring back the Fisherman logo and jerseys as 3rd jersey - and as shoulder logo have the classic "Islanders" logo there. 3. Never use the old jerseys agan. Let them go. The 80's was long ago and they are completely out-dated, boring, creative lacking and inspire nothing.

The NHL Jersey really went through a lot in the 1990's when they started using Computers to design them. So many ugly jerseys from this era.

The Coyotes Kachina is a favourite as well as the desert fox. Don’t get me started on the Blue Jackets though

@@sideline.archive that one was a classic for sure. But then there are the flames, the oilers 3rd, burger kings, blues, so so many. It was like every team decided to update their look (except for a few) and then later went back to their original look. Nearly all of them.

The Flames stallion jersey is fire. Talk to me about Burger King? What's that?

Also, the sports gear companies started telling team owners that they wanted to try "bold" and "innovative" designs, most of which have aged like milk.

Awful era for whole NHL, several teams relocating (for example, "Whalers" with their fantastic logo disappeared)... a lot of teams switched to crappy dark colors (blue became almost gray - grayish blue), all these logo experiments... also Dallas black jersey like NBA (numbers on the chest). Now it's better. Except for that "UTAH HC", c'mon it's not Europe (where I'm from) with all these "Barcelona FC", etc. give a proper name.

It was terrible. It looks very minor league. But then, there were a lot of bad logo redesigns and uniform changes in the 90s...in ALL sports. (A'hem..Seattle Supersonics)
