Is the copyright date on this episode 1960? If so, I believe I remember watching these as a kid, possibly in reruns. I was born in 1963.

It’s ironic that William Conrad (Cannon, Nero Wolfe) is the voice of Lone Ranger.

He played Matt Dillon on the radio. His voice was well accustomed to speaking for Truth and Justice.

Why does Tonto talk like he's remedial?

That's the voice of Ivan Naranjo. Whilst he enjoyed a lot of steady work in his career, he never really had a big breakout role. He was a used car salesman in Season 2, ep one of Knight Rider as a Used car salesman, cameo'ed in Malcolm in the Middle, stuff like that. It sounds like he's trying to emulate the original Tonto, Jay Silverheels, but it would have been better if he used his natural voice.
