This kind of thing happens more often than many think. In 2006, we had an SF team sergeant freeze up during a firefight and refuse to leave his vehicle. Everyone else fought and fought hard. There were plenty of wounded. One of the GMVs came back to the FOB looking as if it had been painted red (because another GMV had been destroyed and they evacuated the wounded on top and inisde that one, and they bled all over it). When the dust settled, Silver Stars and Bronze Stars with V devices were awarded to those who deserved them. I know because I wrote the citations. The team sergeant was quietly removed, and he retired shortly thereafter. Humans can be unpredictable. The important thing is to maintain one's integrity.

Good on you for your honesty. I've always told people that it isn't shameful to be afraid. Cowardice or heroism is something that you discover about yourself, only under extreme circumstances. No one knows how they will react when bullets start flying. There is no shame, in my eyes, for running. However, it proves that a person is unfit for their job. Like the police officers in uvalde, I don't blame them for being cowards, but they can no longer hold positions of authority, as they have proven that they aren't the men we need. On my deployment, I was seriously concerned with how I would respond if attacked. I am proud that, when it came, I handled myself honorably, reacted according to my training, and did not get overwhelmed. After the dust had settled, I broke down in fits of tears and fear. I narrowly escaped the path of a rocket, which probably passed less than 10' over my head before hitting a few dozen yards behind my bed. All I could think about was how close my wife and daughter came to being alone, and it rocked my world. By the next attack, I had come to terms with the situation, and handled things better. However, it taught me some valuable lessons....one, that I can handle the pressure, and can respond appropriately to threats; two, everyone talks tough until shit starts exploding; three, the people who react in a cowardly way and the people who step up will surprise you.

There is more than one SEALs cowardice involved in this story. They were sacrificed, in my opinion, to keep public support for the war. They came up with a script pretty quickly. Marcus, whom I knew as an ADSOCM student at Bragg's Medlab, is just caught in the middle and playing along the best way he can. Robert's Ridge was the same way. I was in the Giant Head Shed tent for the brief back because my ODA was slotted to be the Mike Force. We were not sent after the Chinook practically landed on a machine gun nest in an LZ that was allegedly cleared by drone surveillance. The MIKE Force was repeatedly stood down and eventually CAG went in with TF160 to go get them 12+ hours later. I knew the Combat Controller and the PJ personally. It was a CAG Operator that walked about 7 miles through hip deep snow that got to them first.

My theory is the goat herders never existed and they were ambushed and didnt expect it and got caught off guard. They say that they all had most of their mags full. That tells me they were overwhelmed by gunfire extremely fast and didnt have time to get into a sustained firefight. Sounds like they got lit up and he freaked and ran. Once he took off the other seals reacted and started to fire back but it was too late.
@xT00THP1CKx9 ай бұрын
I dont believe they knew the enemy was coming for them or knew where they were because common sense was out on alot of the decisions made. It's crazy that a patrol of new guys was sent out to conduct special reconnaissance. Would be unthinkable in Army SOF. In CAG only experienced Operators get assigned to Recce Troop. Same with 75th and SF. That's shows how obsessed SEALs are with being assaulters. That the older guys would rather send scrubs out on the most important prep work(recon) whilst they hang around to be QRF and Helo DA raids. The opposite should be the case 😂.
@xT00THP1CKx8 ай бұрын
@vitigaymer1053 The marines had the AO. It makes no sense to me to send 4 seals for this op. Its as if the command element knew they would get into contact but believed they would be able to handle it. The marines are more than capable of doing reconnaissance. The entire thing from start to finish was pure stupidity, and several people lost their lives from others' incompetence. And i believe the hasty response to send in the qrf by helo (that was shot down) was because they didn't care if the seals were killed they just didn't want them being captured because that would've made them look worse.

Just because an individual does something "heroic" doesn't mean its the right thing or the most effective thing to do for everyone else to follow them. Sometimes, the group has to make a logical decision to bound back and reassess the situation in order to effectively eliminate the threat. However, this particular situation is about as bad as it could get, and I'd say everyone that landed on that mountain is a hero. Some questions still not being asked or answered. How did Axle get away? How did 2 survive and 2 die, were supposed to be caught off guard with full mags? Why would the enemy not catch the 2 who weren't dead next to their teammates? The enemy successfully tracked and surprised them and then let 2 get away? Axle did die but supposed to have survived for many days. Why didn't the enemy track him,especially if he was wounded? How did the enemy lose track of Luttrel,while he was in their backyard? Definitely do not dismiss or underestimate the bravery of these men. To enlist in the military,go through the extreme training,go to a war zone,get on the helicopter, and get off the helicopter into danger. Those are 100% brave men. No question about that. My questions are the ones stated previously. I want to hear these podcasts talk about and possibly answer those questions.

If this is true - it’s massive stolen valor and if he is not a sociopath it will consume him internally

I’d rather die than be remembered as a coward. I’m not special operator, but we got in some wild firefights during OEF XI-XII. To this day guys still hit me up and thank me for my fearless fighting. I was definitely scared at times, but the reputation my name carries meant more to me than life itself. I’m proud that when my name is brought up, you can call me many things but a coward in battle is not one of them.

Which Tucker podcast are you referring to?

According to Wikipedia, Marcus Luttrell was deployed with SEAL Team 5 to Irap on April 14 2003. Operation red wings happened on his 2005 Afghanistan deployment with SDV-1. So it was not his first deployment and he is not so new anymore at that point.

I really enjoy reading military books about people that have done incredible things, and incredible situations, but After watching this, it makes me wonder how much of the other military books similar to lone survivor are fabricated to an extent

I didn’t wanna believe it but I’ve heard others say it too. Facts are facts.

I'm not afraid to admit that I'm not cut out for that type of work. I do know that I wouldn't be able to stand in front of an audience and lie about something like that.

Appreciate you pointing this out. The movie distorted everything.

I read his book, I actually threw it away. I thought about trying to sell it on eBay. But I didn’t want to spread the trash.

I’d love to know/see Marcus’s reaction to the Antihero podcast episode. Although he left his teammates, I can’t fault Marcus so much for freezing up and or running away from the fight. I think the warrior mentality is something you have or don’t have. But when you make millions of $$$ portraying yourself as a badass with lies, like Marcus did. Then you can go F*** yourself in every direction.

What's even harder is watching the video of how those seals died up in that mountain. I remember years ago watching the uncut video. Murphy's body all shot up, they immediately started taking off his clothing and his watch and his equipment. Also watching them get gunned down it was sad.

3:33 The more I learn about the Chapman incident the worse it gets. Which by the way there is/was supposed to be a movie about him called “combat controller” starring Jake Gyllenhaal that allegedly the Navy is doing everything in its power to make sure it never sees the light of day.

I am now reading the book Alone at Dawn. It is about the John Chapman story, you may want to check it out.

@@sbhjackson5931 Yes sir I just recently finished it. Excellent book. It gives you nice background of how combat controllers began and evolved. Truly tip of the spear organization, and Chapman is a bonafide American hero!

@@HowieAnderson-jg5yb Yes I never had heard of the CCT guys before, they are game changers in a battle for sure. It's a sad story considering we should have never been in these 2 wars. No WMD like they said for us to invade Iraq and the 9/11 story we were told is false. Brave warrior's lives were lost and their families left devastated.

This is what happens when you spend 2 years training and have no combat experience. This is why Marine and Army infantry, Rangers, SF, Marsoc, Force Recon are more combat effective than the SEAL teams.

Worked in NSW for 20 years. Commented online that Marcus ran long time ago. I knew Danny and Axe, but I didnt know Marcus. What I did know then is that his story was full of shit, BUT everyone was being hush about it publicly. I think it had more to do with OPSEC and PR. Yet, despite this I would comment on podcasts he'd been on that he ran off and left the guys.
