Strasburg is on a flat plain. Roaring Camp goes into the mountains around the sharpest curves and up the steepest grades which requires the use of special geared steam locomotives.

That's an old Shay loco. Has geared wheels, and a driveshaft running down the side of the locomotive and tender.
