I used to do barbell deadlift when I was younger; now that I’m in my mid-30’s, I just do the hex bar. I always feel like I got the same workout, I’m not trying to impress anyone, and I don’t have to worry about potentially hurting my lower back.

My starting deadlift was about 350. I always feel it in my lower back even when I push with the hamstrings and brace the core. I never got anything out of them. But my Bench press I saw about 100 lb improvement. 230-about 320 within a year. What about you ? Deadlifts I saw about a 30-50 lb gain with “crappy” technique

I'm a 72 year old lifter, been lifting coming eight years. I started with the barbell deadlift. Without fail, every few months, a pull would be slightly asymmetrical, and my back would be sore for a couple of weeks. Once or twice, I was afraid that it might be a serious injury. About five years ago, I went to the trap bar. Not once has a workout made my back ache afterwards. The trap bar sets you up to succeed, the straight bar sets you up to fail, sooner or later.

Unless you compete in powerlifting or just straight up enjoy the lift, you do not have to do a barbell deadlift off the floor. Plus there are a lot of studies done on how trap bar deadlifts are better for force production and power development. Be more economical with your training.

Yes. I agree 100 percent. Most fitness coaches propel this idea that you compulsorily have to do straight bar deadlifts. Personally, to me, trap bar deadlifts always felt much safer and natural as opposed to conventional. I have a lower back issue and conventional deadlift only exacerbates that. Trap bar deadlift, on the other hand, makes me feel stronger.

"When I would train the average person, they're far more likely to be able to do a trap bar properly than they would be able to do a barbell deadlift." This is the critical point. Most of us are novices, no matter how frequently we train. The trap bar/hex bar deadlift is safer for the average Joe (or Jane), and is likely more beneficial, because they'll be able to perform it more frequently.

I've heard that many people get injured with deadlifts, even professionals, plus I've had back surgery. I don't think it's worth running the risk since I'm just trying to build muscle. I want a movement that loads my traps and forearms, so for me avoiding conventional and going for trap bar deadlifts is the way to go.
@SSchithFoo

Yeah, lots of professionals act like any of these are natural movements when they are not. You don't bench anything in the real-world like you bench a barbell, you actually push using your whole palm if a cupboard lands on you. There isn't enough discussion around how many snap all their shit up with deadlifts, squats and bench press.

Having just recently injured my lower back from RDLs, it's made me completely rethink the entire exercise. And I injured it during the warm up sets of the exercise, with near perfect form. Granted, I did not wear a belt as I never have but it seems RDLs and normal Deadlifts are an exercise that you can fuck up your back with irrespective of good form. It's an exercise that needs every muscle group working in tangen otherwise even the smallest of muscle compensation (e.g. your lower back doing more than your core) can lead to injury. Never tried hex bar but gonna give it a try now, as I'm rethinking how worth deadlifts are knowing the risks..

With this video, I never quite ascertained the reason for why one should move on from the trap bar to a straight bar... I got some reasons for why one would be generally safer and might be happier on a trap bar, though...
@JamesT-kz4jf
@JamesT-kz4jf Жыл бұрын
The guy says, if you can't do a barbell deadlift properly, let's work on your mobility, hip hinging, and stability, so I'm guessing improving those areas are why you would want to move to a straight bar. He also mentions that the barbell deadlift is a better hip hinge exercise. Also, the barbell deadlift is a specific movement that the trap bar deadlift is side stepping somehow, so, almost by definition, the barbell deadlift is working something that the trap bar deadlift isn't or as effectively.
@Siberius-
@Siberius- Жыл бұрын
@@JamesT-kz4jf - Yea if using a straight bar entails more abilities with the body, then there's probably benefit in attaining those abilities, if one cares. Certainly not necessary. If one is using a trap bar because they HAVE to, over a barbell, then yea you definitely want to be able to work your way back to having the ability to use the barbell. Many people have the abilities but just choose to use a trap bar, though. Also just learning how to use a straight bar is a useful skill to have, since there isn't always a trap bar in every situation. Then also it's another exercise in one's arsenal, since a straight bar has more posterior chain and stuff. So there's benefits. I think people generally pair straight bar deadlift with high-bar squats, so that makes sense with anterior and posterior. A trap bar deadlift is posterior, but also uses more quad than a straight bar. I use a trap bar, and I primarily do Romanian Deadlifts to hit the posterior chain to a higher degree, and then I do a heels-elevated squat-pattern movement for quads (I stand on something to get a bit higher so as I can do a full squat). Really separating the anterior and posterior, with the same bar hanging in my hands. I also like that you don't need a big rack, and you can just easily drop the trap bar without as much concern (nice for using drop pads and being more quiet, like I do). If one cares about those earlier benefits, then yea try to incorporate a straight bar for sure (doesn't have to replace trap bars entirely of course, as they would agree).

I think argument that the average person should start with trap bar deadlifting is quite straightforward, but what about when a novice/intermediate runs into issues barbell deadlifting? I'm working with a personal trainer and very quickly worked up to barbell deadlifting 225lbs for 2 reps. Not that impressive but my form is solid and I'm very happy to have hit this milestone. Before starting working out, I had a minor lower back issue that isn't a problem now, but during and after heavy barbell deadlifts I experience mild discomfort. I'm not sure if it's simply health stress or bordering on problematic stress. To air on the side of caution, I started hex bar deadlifting. Within a couple of sessions I was now deadlifting 255lbs for 5 reps. I definitely feel less stress on my lower back. Why should someone like myself go back to barbell deadlifting? What are the advantages at this stage in my lifting journey? I have zero interest in competing, and I'm experiencing less lower back stress. Studies have also shown that the average lifter can lift more with a hex bar than a conventional deadlift. So now I'm able to lift more weight and put more healthy stress on my muscles. What am I missing? if anything.

Title should really be "Hot take on trap bar" and not misleading like you guys go beyond opinions. It's just like EZ-Bar vs Olympic Bar. One is more accessible, gentle on the joints, and easier to cue. The Olympic bar is iconic and looks less fussy. Which is serious gym currency. I wont argue the barbell is more difficult and requires a much more complex cue, but 'being able to barbell deadlift' isn't enough of a reason to barbell deadlift. Trap Bar 100%

Barbell Deadlift is something I have struggled with, even hurt myself with (under not so great tuition). I have had problems with my lower back on and off dating back to 2007, It's only recently I have been trying to purposely improve my mobility, lower back strength and stability. I have been doing trap bar deadlift and since June I have gone from 70kg to being able to lift 118kg this week. That gave me the confidence to try a barbell deadlift (after research of technique etc) and managed to dead lift 60kg, which even 3-4 months ago is something I wouldn't have thought I could do or even have the confidence to try. Oh and I did film it and my form looked good to me but more importantly I felt good, not like my back was about snap in half which is how I used to feel haha.

One of his clients came in brittle and frail at 90, and deadlifted 235 x 3 at close to 95. So what the hell is up with all of your lame excuses that "it's harder to train." It's funny how these so called experts give there opinion on what's BEST. There thought process is so old school. The purpose of equipment is to make any lift more ergonomic. Why would I use a straight bar when I can get just as strong lifting the trap bar. I guess these guys don't like any other bar but the straight bar. Camber bar is better than straight for Bench, because you don't have to load your delts or blow out your pecks. But all the cavemen can continue with the 1970s way of training. As a regular gym goer I need to stay safe all while building muscle. Plain and simple.

There’s a lot of nostalgia going on. Personally, just use a trap bar. It’s been described as a ‘squat lift’, like a squat with the weight in your hands. It keeps ‘the stack’ better, the diaphragm lined up over the pelvic floor, and there’s no doubt it keeps the lordosis in the spine better aligned. Nothings as satisfying as a proper deadlift though, just keep it safe. Just another point, there’s zero chance of tearing a bicep using a trap bar, however a supinated grip on a conventional bar can cause the bicep tendon to detach because it places the dynamics of the joint in an unfavourable position. Btw this only happens when using steroids. AAS makes the muscle faster than the tendon.

Rippetoe, in my opinion, is a very smart guy, who correctly identifies certain aspects of the trap bar deadlift that are problematic. He "lost his target" when he said it was [useless crap]. But it's not, for the reasons you all articulated, just as the deadlift has its problems and special considerations- again, as you all articulate. It struck me that Rippetoe, for whatever reason, by analogy, criticizes an apple for not being an orange.

To develop strength to be able to lift off the floor , either hinging or squatting - the trap bar wins. Much more likely to injure yourself with barbell vs trap bar. Sure learn the technique to squat but whats the point in starting with weight on your shoulders - most of the time in sport or real life what ever you are trying to lift is on the deck to start with and if its more than 120kg you wont be slinging it onto your shoulders!

The average person is never going to have perfect form all the time, nor is it reasonable to expect them to. All it takes is one bad day and one snap to cause lifelong perpetual lower back problems.

LOL @ The trap bar cheer leading section this has become. You can still injure yourself with a trap bar in many different ways. Also, the barbell dead is a super functional realistic movement whereas the trap is not. This wasn't a video to demonize the barbell dead lol but you'd think it was if you read the comments and didn't watch it.

False gospel. Repenting of sins is works. Jonah 3:10. Compare that to Romans 11:6, Ephesians 2:8-9, Acts 16:30-31, Romans 4:5 That verse in Luke 13 is about not being a useful Christian and being chastised and taken out of the world, not about getting saved and going to heaven.
