I started lifting ~8 months ago after living the first 33 years of my life sedentary and quite overweight. I got into the trap bar early since with my belly and short arms it was difficult to get into a good and confident position with a straight bar deadlift. Been using the trap bar as my main DL with sumo pulls as a secondary and I just cleared my first 350lb single last week.

Trap bar lift is a great tool to have in your arsenal. Especially true for people with an awkward build for conventional deadlift.

Love my trap bar! Too many injuries over too many decades have made it impossible to do proper squats beyond just using bodyweight and a vest. I changed over to leg presses but that didn't work the entire Posterior Kinetic Chain. Deadlifts are also good but are difficult to morph into a pseudo-squat without adding some risk. The trap bar lets me align the travel path more with how a squat actually works. Plus there's the added grip builder from having to hold the bar instead of resting it on your shoulders. One of the best side benefits it that it fits in my home gym better than my Olympic bar. My gym is a little over 11'x11'. With a bench, squat rack, ab tower, kettlebells, dumbbells and plate racks, there's not a lot of room for an Olympic bar. Lifts have to be extremely controlled to keep from busting out a window. The trap bar is a lot shorter so I can move around with it a little more.

The trap bar helped me build the mental confidence to attack the straight bar deadlift. When I was a novice, I remember thinking “if I can do 405 on a trap bar, 405 on a straight is coming soon”

Now I’m falling in love with the trap bar all over again - keeping in mind that Rip’s BUSINESS is giving advice in fitness, and his social media presence is always amplified by taking hard stances on things which in turn, helps his BUSINESS.

I haven't used trap bar in years and literally just did it earlier today to do something different for deads and a car deadlift event in July. I did low handle cause can only fit like 495lbs max on this bar and worked on depth and reps. Also started the low volume/ intensity week for deads and back. Finding less is more sometimes. Also did belt less like you said. The coincidence of your videos and some others recently is insane! Thanks for the info!
@GreenLightningHood2 жыл бұрын
I have no issues performing squats or deadlifts and I'm sure most of you don't either. The fact of the matter is that we use Trap Bar deadlifts because squats and deadlifts suck and no matter how much weight you do, you feel like you should have been able to lift more. This lift is not a proper replacement, but God damn does it feel good.

Even if there is a small advantage in some manner to the barbell, if you train 20 sessions with the Trap bar and only 8 with the barbell, your progress is ruined.

you should at least do some sort of proper hinge like an RDL or SLDL if you dont want to pull from the floor with a straight bar. Those are better for hypertrophy anyways. The trap bar is worst for quads that squats, and worst for hamstrings than a deadlift. Im taking about the high handle here.
