This is my anti-anxiety book. Chambers uses the word ‘comfy’ all the time and ... that is literally this book. I’m not sure which book in this series I love the most. A Closed and Common Orbit is !!!!! too.

Girl, you had me at "Mass Effect" ;) lmao! One of my favorite aspects of video games, etc is learning about the different races/species and learning their backstories. This is going to be perfection for me! You've done it again! :)

I'm on page 100 or so thus far and it's amazing. The fact that after 50 or so pages I could picture each character and they had distinct personalities which weren't forgettable was very refreshing. It was beautifully written sci fi without relying on sci fi tropes. I've heard this book called something of a character piece and thus far I would have to agree. I'm excited to continue it!

I know a book series similar to this, but it's not set in space. Inda by Sherwood Smith is set in medievaleque world that is complex and has diversity and is so, so good. Also it takes place on the sea, with pirates and the like for more then half of the series.

I think I gave this 3 stars. I don't necessarily think it was slow-paced - I often enjoy slow-paced books anyway! - but the plot just sort of meandered on to nowhere. It might have worked better in an episodic tv show format or something, with the crew going off on various adventures (can totally see why people compare it to Firefly). I didn't think the writing was spectacular either. That said, I did love the characters and their relationships. The different species and the details of their cultures was fascinating, I love that sort of thing so much! It definitely wasn't what I was expecting anyway when I picked it up by chance in a bookshop, and different is always refreshing! :)

Oh my gosh, Sam this was SUCH a great review!! I'm itching to read this book now, because I'm in the mood for a great, character-driven space opera. I love what you said about the different types of cultures explored on the ship. I knew that this story showcased queer characters, but it was also great to hear about the different types of pronouns they use and the different types of relationships they engage in. I love when SFF books incorporate in those kinds of ideals and concepts, so that just makes me want to read this book even more. I may have to start it soon ^__~

Mass Effect is one of my top favorite games ever as well. How excited are you for Mass Effect Andromeda next year, and please tell me you've played or plan to play Dragon Age Inquisition?
@ThoughtsOnTomes8 жыл бұрын
Ok I get emotional over Andromeda on a daily basis. I cannot wait to meet Ryder and see all the pretty new worlds and have new friendships and more developed romances UGHHHH I'M SO EXCITED! I do plan to play Inquisition! I tried to play Origins over a year ago and couldn't get into it but I'm going to attempt DA:2 after I finished ME:3, and then play Inquisition after that. I figure that will fill in the time between finishing ME:3 and Andromeda coming out.

It sounds like there's no conflict in this book, if it's just different species living their lives. Like if Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes never had antagonists or enemies. But that doesn't seem interesting. So I'm wondering if there's really a plot to keep readers interested.

If you liked this I'd recommend Ascension by Jacqueline Koyanagi. It's a little bit broad - some romance! some space opera! some dystopia! - but it's got a great cast of characters and it's a world that I found really engrossing.
@ThoughtsOnTomes8 жыл бұрын
ooooh I will have to check that out!

As a biologist I love books that go into detail about other alien species so much, I find it so interesting. It's not really sci-fi, it's more dystopian, but have you read the Gone series by Micheal Grant, the relationships in that series are amazing and also the characters are super diverse 😀
@ThoughtsOnTomes8 жыл бұрын
No, I've heard about that series but I haven't actively sought out a dystopian in a while.
@amyr32938 жыл бұрын
+Thoughts on Tomes it's not strictly dystopian, it's hard to categorise, it's almost more of a superhero type thing, it's one of my favourite series of all time, the characters are so great and all of them are morally grey, I really think you'd like it, it's not the stereotypical ya dystopian at all

I read the Kindle sample for this and I felt the characters were really amateurishly written and I had seen those archetypes in fanfiction 1000 times. I really enjoy science fiction though so maybe I shouldn't judge a book by its Kindle sample. You should totally check the Xenogensis trilogy by Octavia Butler if you think it looks like it might interest you. The character relationships and depth are a little lacking, tbh, I loved the concepts in it.
@ThoughtsOnTomes8 жыл бұрын
Ah no I definitely think you should give it a shot. At first, it seems really typical. Roguish captain. Naive new girl. Hyper nerdy tech people. But then it goes deeper and they all become more realistic and less like archetypes. I definitely had that fear in the beginning as well. I will definitely have to give the Xenogensis series a shot! I've heard Octavia Butler is amazing.

So, basically what I've learned from this review is that this book contains almost all of the sci-fi elements my current WIP will have EXCEPT for the action, save the galaxy kind of adventure to it. I. MUST. READ. IT. You know . . . For research . . Yeah, I'm using that excuse to take a break from writing. That's a good excuse. Nobody judge me.

I am about 5 hours into the audio-book and I am glad I watched this review. It let me re-adjust my expectations, because I was getting a little exasperated with the plot, since it didn't seem to go anywhere. But now that I know it is just mostly worldbuilding and character relationships, I think I can appreciate it on another level. Although I don't think I will ever grow to like Kizzy. Her character archetype is always so grating and cringy (see also Peebee from Mass Effect Andromeda).
@ThoughtsOnTomes7 жыл бұрын
Omg I never really think of Kizzy but now that you compare her to Peebee, I totally see it.

Argh fuck. I was looking for a good little space adventure and I looked this book up because I saw it on a top ten list. Now that you tell me this a book about identity politics and how sexuality is a social construct, I'm really regretting getting this as my first freebie on audible. Glad I didn't pay for it at least. Maybe I should just listen to Dune again. Oh well, I hope Thoughts on Tomes lady grows out of this stuff at some point.
