Interesting perspective on the border formation and what it looks like at ground level. I'd like to add that land surveys were typically performed with compass and theodolite (or transit), and in certain situations maybe chains (not string). Many thanks!
@DonRossMusic

This has likely been dealt with in another comment, but I'll risk repeating it. The 49th parallel forms the border from Lake of the Woods west to the border between BC and Washington State. East of Lake of the Woods, the border follows a combination of natural boundaries and treaty-agreed survey markers. This is alluded to (briefly), but for the most part the border is called a straight line (even referred to incorrectly as a straight line that goes on for 6416 km at 1:40) . "The 49th Parallel" is a colloquialism for the international boundary, but 70% of Canada's population actually lives south of the 49th parallel, including all the people in Toronto and Montreal (the two largest cities). I live in Nova Scotia at 44.6 degrees north. The whole province is below the 49th, as are the entire provinces of Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. The eastern parts of the border were negotiated for the most part in the 18th and 19th centuries. Toronto is located at 43 degrees North, Montreal at 45, and Halifax (where I live) at 44.6. Even Ottawa, the national capital, is at 45. So, the western half of the border is the 49th parallel for the most part (like Vancouver and its appropriately named coffee shop), but the vast majority of the population lives south of the 49th. Fun fact: Pelee Island (Canada's southernmost point in the middle of Lake Erie) is at 41.6 degrees North, a little south of the boundary line between Oregon and California over on the west coast. Cool, eh?

@DonRossMusic 3 жыл бұрын
@@a_human8489 Hi there. I don't really understand this comment or how what I said could at all be insulting, but, no matter how one counts the populations of the largest cities in Canada, Vancouver is smaller than both Montreal and Toronto. That's not an insult, it's just true. According to the 2016 census, the population of the city of Vancouver proper is 603,502, which makes it Canada's 8th largest city (after Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Ottawa, Edmonton, Mississauga and Winnipeg). If one counts the greater metropolitan areas of the cities (central city + suburban and satellite communities), Vancouver has 2,463,431 people, making it the third largest after Toronto (5,928,040) and Montreal (4,098,927). Montreal is majority French speaking (indeed, the world's second largest French-speaking city after Paris), but Canada has had two official languages for many years and Montrealers have Canadian citizenship. Have a nice day!

I like how some of these "inconveniences" could be solved by adding ferry trips across the water. Ferry from Point Roberts to the rest of the Us mainland =No border crossing and generally shorter time spent on the trip itself.
@FruityVeggieHead

I thought this too, I’m sure tho there’s a good reason they haven’t. Probably either weather or currents make a ferry unreliable/not always safe, or it’s financially not worth it bc of how few people would utilize the ferry. I’m sure it’s like the border towns in TX where people work/shop over the border rather than travel farther into the US. I bet the school children are the only ones who “need” to travel to the rest of the US, and there can’t be that many of them if it’s only middle school up in that small an area
@MexiPenguin11

Yes, however the water though that area can get extremely choppy during the winter. You would need a substantially large ferry to handle the wakes, too big and costly for the amount of children and adults. Hip hip hooray for northern Washington winter weather!

Wouldn't be that practical. In terms of Canada we only have Canadians crossing the border and they wouldn't feel the need to since the living conditions are pretty much the same. The southern border doesn't just open up to Mexico but to every other country in the continental Americas. Also there isn't nearly as much trade between the US and Canada as there is between the US and Mexico so it would make sense for there to be more security at that border because way way more people are crossing it for economic reasons. In my opinion the wall is a bit much and more of a public stunt than anything effective, however it makes sense for the Canadian and Mexican borders to be different.
