In the movie "The longest day" there is a scene of a French resistance fighter blowing up a train taking armored units and infantry units to Normandy. If the train wasn't blown up. The landings at Normandy would not have been possible. That guy who blew up the train? He was my grandfather.

Do not forget the French resistance, the coded message broadcast on the BBC was a poem by Verlaine. "Les sanglots longs de l'automne blesse mon coeur d'une langueur monotone..." "the long sobs of autumn hurt my heart with monotonous languor ..." Warned the resistance fighters that the landing was imminent and everyone had to complete their sabotage task against the enemy. Eisenhower reportedly said that the resistance did the work of 10 divisions. You might think so, he was an expert.

I've spent a great bit of time in England and Wales -- in normal pubs and real villages. To this day, as soon as locals hear me speak, I am thanked for America's entry into the war, ALWAYS asked about American football (I know ZERO) and usually leave a pub over the limit. In Wales they can't conceive of a Yank woman whose preferred drink is Guinness so they bet a pint, I win and the lads keep buying. The "Longest Day" was only successful because nations, armed services, resistance fighters and saboteurs ALL worked together for the common good and ALL kept their secrets. Thank God for them all.

Chills. I have chills throughout my body and soul listening to this rendition. Perhaps because I've seen the movie, "The Longest Day," perhaps because my dad fought in WWII, perhaps because my husband and son were in the Army, perhaps because I am a sappy, but fierce, patriot. Whatever the reason, I cannot properly thank the US military - Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard - for all they do to protect our country. "The Greatest Generation" saved the world from destruction. Thank you to those brave souls.

I walked from the Normandy beaches inland following the route of the invasion. I stopped at little bars and restaurants. All had American Flags and most had pictures of General Patten. One town even had a statue of Patton in the town square. Since I speak French, I was able to converse with the older people who remembered the events. Whoever said that The French were not grateful?

My father flew 5 sorties June 6, 1944, starting by escorting the airborne to their drop-zones. He and his squadron then spent the rest of the day flying CAP over the beaches of Utah and Omaha. By his account there only allied planes dared the sky over those beaches.
@RicTic667 жыл бұрын
At the end of my street is a monument to The Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. For their 2nd Airborne battalion it truly was 'The Longest Day' As they were the first Allied action of D-Day Operation Deadstick, a glider assault at 00:16 06 June 1944 at Pegasus Bridge over the Caen Canal they along with British 5th Parachute Brigade and British 3rd Parachute Brigade destroyed 5 bridges and set up the beacons and lights for other parachute landings. No one denies the Americans input on D-Day it's a shame the video that goes along with this very good singing fails to acknowledge The British , Canadian, Free French etc who fought and died on 06/06/44.

D Day-June 6, 1944 was not only the Longest Day, it was the turning point of World War II in Europe-it was the beginning of the end of Nazi rule by Adolf Hitler in Germany. The turning point in the Pacific was the Battle for Leyte Gulf on October 20,1944. 2 of my late second cousins were in the Marine Corps and an uncle of mine was in the Navy, they were at Leyte Gulf. My father in law and an uncle in law were in the U.S. Army in the Philippines-All are now dead-A World War II veteran dies everyday.

@JohnJameson18y10 жыл бұрын
Nef22 That remains to be disputed as we do not know what would have happened. The western Allies would have landed eventually plus they were in Italy already. The Germans weakened their eastern front by pulling out elite units and deploying them in the west (not the SS though, they were some of the worst units they had, contrary to common believe). The Russian might have progressed further into Germany though. They would have however never taken the BeNeLux states or even France as this would have led to war with the west. Especially over France...
