Heh, I was a background extra on this film. You actually played a clip I'm in too @7:14 behind Adam next to the player with the long braids. I then jump on top of table cheering. Later I play a guard in the football scene. Was a blast, and met all the wrestlers and got photos with them. Solid 3 months of work too.

A lot of movies like this never talk about what the prisoners did (unless they were wrongly convicted or something) because it would make the characters harder to sympathize with and the point of these movies is usually to sympathize with the inmates, but I think it would be interesting to see a movie like this with the full context of what crimes they committed and then see how the audience feels about them in the end.

It’s crazy to compare this comedy remake to the original which was more of a film than comedy but there were comedic moments in the original. As remakes go, this movie isn't a terrible one. I actually like it. But the first "Longest Yard" film is an American classic. So this movie got a lot of hate, at the time it came out, for daring to try and supplant it. I do like that Burt Reynolds agreed to be in this one, though. That gave it a little bit of credibility as a remake.

I saw the original a long time ago. They pretty much followed the same beats as the original, so what happened to Hightower didn't surprise me. The original was a bit more serious, and a bit of a departure for Reynolds, as he usually played the triumphant protagonist. Someone else mentioned it, but let me second watching The Replacements. You get Keneau Reeves and Gene Hackman in a comedy. One of my favorites; I've lost count of the number of times I've watched it.
