Hahaha. I absolutely LOVED the comment about how Starfleet should "look into providing Ships Counselors". A subtle but very funny nod to TNG. Which is personally my favorite version of Star Trek. Mainly because it's the one I grew up on. But I love and respect all versions in their own way. And great job on the set and sound effects. So spot on.
@Jack_Stafford5 жыл бұрын
Back in the day, the doctor was also the counselor, as you will see in both the pilot in the first couple episodes of Star Trek, the doctor would show up at the Captain's Quarters with some booze and asking what's wrong and get him talking about his problems. And was always on the bridge to add his counsel as well.
@xMRxZEROx5 жыл бұрын
@@Jack_Stafford I thought that was more because Kirk and McCoy were just best friends? He was just a friend being there for another friend? And not to mention, wasn't McCoy 3rd in command anyway after Kirk and Spock? Which would explain his being on the bridge so often, especially during a crisis. Besides being the Chief Medical officer.
@Jack_Stafford5 жыл бұрын
@@xMRxZEROx well that is one answer, but at some point he even says that he has a degree in Psychology and is there to listen. I believe he also removed people from command referencing his psychology background. And in the pilot with Captain Pike his doctor did a similar thing, captain pike was extremely depressed and questioning his command it was the doctor who counseled him about that issue, and they were vastly different in age. So in general I think doctors filled that role until they got larger Crews and could have a specialist in each medical role later on.

You’re not the only fan film I’ve noticed this with. Vulcans not only have pointed ears, their eyebrows are slanted as well. Yet I have not seen a fan film yet where the eyebrows were done correctly.
@Jack_Stafford3 жыл бұрын
It's probably because an actor making a large wage is more likely to allow their eyebrows to be shaved or partially shaved then a fan that is doing it for no pay at all. And remember T'pol and Saavik didn't have shaved and slanted eyebrows. At least not at first.
@kennethcollins76653 жыл бұрын
@@Jack_Stafford, I’ve been doing cosplay for years. Bobbed my eyebrows and used my hair and mesh to make the slanted portion for the proper look. Many fans who cosplay Vulcans and Romulans do the same. I also did community theater. Same there. If I was supposed to look a certain way for a role, that’s what I did. I wasn’t getting paid. It was a matter of pride and also honoring the character. For groups who seem to take such care and pride in everything else in their production values, it just seems “off”.
@Jack_Stafford3 жыл бұрын
@@kennethcollins7665 again, cosplayers may be so devoted that they're willing to bob their eyebrows even though they may never grow back. Cosplayers can have a sometimes unique, obsessive Devotion to details of a character that another person who has a job (that may require them to not have bobbed eyebrows in the office) simply doesn't. Also, you didn't address that there is precedence for a number of Vulcans not having the extreme slanted eyebrows.
@kennethcollins76653 жыл бұрын
@@Jack_Stafford , I realize all of those things. I’m not complaining. It is an observation. Again, many of the fan productions I’ve seen are amazing. Their attention to detail is spot on as far as uniforms and props and set designs go. It just struck me as odd, that off all of the ones I’ve seen so far, that is one bit of makeup that they haven’t done (and as I learned later and my makeup skills improved, it is not necessary to bob the eyebrows).
@luminiferous1960 Жыл бұрын
In the fan made series "Star Trek Continues" Spock's eyebrows are done correctly. If you haven't seen "Star Trek Continues," I recommend that you do watch it since it is the best fan made series that I have seen.

Not quite to the point that I could hit the like button, but it beats the hell out of anything "official" since 2005. The acting in this was a bit too rough, and the script was too derivative of the original series: a little more originality would have been nice. The writing should also have been better, even for amateurs like most of us fans, but it was better than many Discovery episodes. It was better than *all* of Picard, and actually made sense. Having stated my criticism, Its still good to see something made by someone who actually loves Star Trek and actually understands it. The Prime Directive (as an absolute) is a very bad idea. It's good to prevent Starfleet from playing God, but there are times when it is counter productive and downright destructive. For example: A global disaster strikes. You gather data and input it into the computer and then ask the computer, "If this disaster is allowed to run its course, afterward will there be enough mating opportunities for the species to continue?" If the answer is yes, then interference is unwarranted. If the answer is no, then you interfere. Hopefully without having to reveal yourselves as aliens, but if that's the only way, then so be it. At least the species will survive. Survival is *always* better than extinction.

I don't like saying this, but the lighting was dreadful. Whoever is doing the show, please study the lighting techniques of film and TV in general, and of TOS in particular. Lovely, effective lighting (and artistic use of shadow) was one of Jerry Finnerman's signatures for the show. This was lit more like the pilot episode of M*A*S*H. It worked OK for M*A*S*H, but is NOT the same as the colorful aesthetic of TREK. The actors... well, the Vulcan could have been a young Paul Fix! Other than that, the actors suffer the same issue as many amateurs or just-starting-out professionals: ACTING too hard. Not every word needs emotion or strong inflection. RELAXING is the key to honest, realistic, organic acting. ACTING means ACTING like you're NOT ACTING. The VFX Look to be very well-done, which just makes the live-action stand out as that much less of an effort.
