Norris beat Piastri 2:1 in qualifying & race in 2023. The evidence isn’t there, hanging it on a loaded question asked to a new team principle in his second language is a bit thin. I am sure Piastri will push Norris harder as he develops, but the track-based evidence still says Norris will respond.

@@MsZeeZed That car was build by a team that took Norris wishes as the benchmark though. Ricciardo couldn't drive with it. Piastri was able to work with it despite being a rookie. Also don't forget he won almost everything in junior categories. Don't be surprised when Piastri, despite having way less experience, will actually beat Norris.

@@djoetma The Mclaren wasnt designed around Norris . Mclaren said the car is designed to be quick and they cant factor in a particular drivers preferences. Norris has stated he doesnt like the car as it is. Piastri had a great junior career but so did Lando , arguably even better as Lando won five back to back championships as a rookie and only failed in F2 if you call coming second a failure when driving for an inexperienced team against George Russell and other future F1 drivers. Oscar will beat Lando on occasion thats the nature of F1. he is a very good driver but will he beat him over a season. I very much doubt that in the coming season. There is quite a gap between them.

I don't think so. It's been Lando's team for ages. And I doubt he would be too happy if the team started favoring Piastri. His relationship with McLaren is like Verstappen and Redbull.

There is no tension right now, but that can change when they are challenging for wins as often happens when two drivers are close.

This can change in a whim. The grid is the friendliest it's ever been, but a lot of that can end very quickly if the supposed 2nd driver starts outperforming the lead driver. I feel like Norris could already be feeling this pressure from thebother side of the garage and is slowly inching towards the front of his mind. These guys want to win, if there was no drive to, then there would be no sport/competition to watch or sell, and basically no point in it happening.
@MashifyLV
@MashifyLV Жыл бұрын
Nonsense! There is plenty of potential basis there. If the team continues being just as strong and even improves compared to others, tensions can't not rise between drivers, since they are fighting for such top spots.
@dannypesek

Also disagree. I could be wrong, however, I don't remember Norris making as many mistakes in '22 as he did in '23. Part of that would be him pushing more when the car had the potential of podiums, but also pressure from Piastri. I think they have a good teammate relationship, but I think as Piastri's race pace begins to match Norris', then a bit of tension will arise.
@crispybanana3198
@crispybanana3198 Жыл бұрын
i think that Piastri's arrival at Mclaren could turn out to be a real blessing in disguise for Norris, being actually pushed by a teammate and having to deal with growing pressure by improving Piastri could make Norris into a tougher driver and that could be exactly what he needs to start winning

The notion that a near equal performer in the car is the best for a team is an unproven idea. Besides Rosberg, every drivers champion over the last 20 years has enjoyed a performance delta over their team mate. These are highly motivated individuals, they don't need their team mate to push them when they have 18 other world class drivers they are competing against.
@benben3409

Sainz will NEVER truly challenge Leclerc. Leclerc and Sainz were matched before Leclerc got the upgrade if you remove Leclerc's bad luck, but even then, Leclerc was ahead. In 2021, Leclerc was the clear faster driver in races and qualifying, but had so much bad luck he lost to Sainz. Sainz can only challenge Leclerc if Leclerc has a bad set-up and bad luck, and that bad set-up will no longer be a problem if they just relax with a 1-2 dynamic.

A strong driver pairing means managing the egos, the strategies, the expectations of the car and managing the respective fanbases. Every driver is there to perform for themselfs and their take on responsibility to the team is to keep the car in one piece and bring it over the line as quickly as possible. A strong or weak teammate is of no consequence to them as shown many times by the greatest in the sport. I found it highly amusing that Gary Anderson put the pairing of Verstappen and Perez on number 10 because of Sergio's performance which was partly due to the drivability of the RB19. Pierre Wache said in a recent interview that the only regret they had is that they couldn't get both drivers to perform well in the RB19. That is one thing they are planning to rectify with the RB20. If that is the case than I suggest we have this conversation again about strong driver pairings.

It’s funny how this year everyone focus on qualifying pace, now that they were even in qualifying results. But last year when Lewis beat him in qualifying, everyone wanted to focus the standings. This year since Lewis dominated Russell in standings, they just brush it off to find ways to make Russell look like he’s even or perhaps better than Lewis. Man it must be hard to be Lewis, lol man can’t get it right no matter what he does, they will always try to downplay his performance/accomplishments.

Even last year, depending on how you calculate, correcting for wet sessions, sessions where only one driver made it through to Q2 or Q3, etc... Russell was actually slightly faster that Lewis. Either way they're within a tenth of each other both seasons.

LeClerc is just better than Sainz, only reason they were close mid-season was the car setup needed to be compromised. But The Norris and Piastri narrative will flip, Norris can't handle the pressure and is already at his peak and Piastri will be better than him within 2-3 years.

Sainz went up against a Verstappen in his second season actually driving a car. Vs current Verstappen he would be obliterated. And when both are comfortable in the car he also is way behind Leclerc. In short, if Sainz is close to Leclerc consistently, that is bad news for Ferrari, because Leclerc must be underperforming. Of all these drivers I think Sainz is closest to Perez (the Perez that is not putting unrealistic pressure in himself. To beat Max)

Russell was a jr for Mercedes when they were winning everything, is one of the very free to have won F3 and F2 on the bounce and against major talent, stayed at Williams for 3 years (2 where they were 10th and he could do nothing but agonise over trying to get a point) waiting for his shot, would’ve beaten Bottas and won on a one off at Merc at Sakhir but was denied by two things going wrong out of his control, finally got his shot at Mercedes right as they stopped making the best car and he can’t fight for wins nevermind titles, and now is stuck with Hamilton as a teammate way beyond when people thought he would retire all because Michael Masi wanted a show and Hamilton is hellbent on getting that 8th title which is proving disastrous for Russell because Hamilton is the better driver still. Russell must be utterly livid with how not to plan things have gone and it absolutely will blow up at one point. This 'teammate drama' kind of thing has always struck me as childish and unnecessary. All the long time diehard F1 fans that defend this just goes to show that they are fans of a reality show rather than actual racing. I think F1 would be way better if built cars for each of their drivers independently instead of building one car concept around one driver in a 'survival of the fittest' bs team game show. Most other racing series have teams that actually work together to beat the rival teams rather than force their drivers to be crabs in a bucket. It's just silly. Race the other teams, not each other

George might be quick, but there's no way he has the ability to win multiple races over a season, he's too emotional right now, he needs to improve his tyre management and race pace and learn to stay calm during a race. I would not rate Mercedes' driver line-up very highly. I'd rate it highly toxic. Like Alonso already noted years ago, Hamilton can only drive in front. Russell kept going hard throughout 2023, Hamilton just gave up. They did not collide in Qatar. Hamilton rammed Russell. When Hamilton claims he wants to train Russell, all he says "stay back there boy." Leclerc is pretty fast. Over a lap. When he doesn't make unforced errors. And he's not as fast as Verstappen; Charles takes poles because he sacrifices race speed for the Saturday qualifying. Sainz is pretty good and has his head attached to his shoulders and his brain turned on. You can compare Leclerc and Sainz to Senna and Prost, only with just a bit less talent and titles. But they are good drivers, Charles will take the top step again. Sometime. Norris and Piastri is also an interesting pairing. Norris has about the same level as mental toughness as Leclerc. Piastri is good, still needs to figure out some of that tire management. Norris is improving on his mental health though, thanks to Piastri. One can measure Lando's growth by less pranks and unfunny jokes and more results.
