@@EHagen10 Thank you my bro. I would advise that sometimes you should not insist. Because there are sheep chosen by God. Muslims have no control over any subject. For example, they do not know concepts such as creation, exodus, ten commandments, messiah, salvation. For myself, I searched and wondered about God a lot. Since I saw Jesus differently since I was born, I found the truth, God blessed me. I hope one day everyone will learn the truth and I have no doubt that they will understand :)

I listened to this song over and over a number of times yesterday as I watched the Queen's funeral cortege wind its way through the beautiful Scottish lowland countryside. It made for an emotional but peaceable time reflecting on the remarkable life of an extraordinary person, on the beauty of Scotland, and the meaning of being alive... and whatever comes after. Plus, of course, The Vicar of Dibley... but that's beside the point.

The church where I worked as choir director and organist had a truly wonderful choir. Our Pastor was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and the outcome was not good. I made up a packet of 10 anthem, most of which they knew, but included this one I had just purchased. We rehearsed all of the anthems, got them ready, then put the packet back in their slots. When the time came, the congregation cried through the whole anthem. A year later I pulled it out in prep for Good Shepherd Sunday, and they teared up, and said no, they couldn’t get through it.

Sometimes, death isn't such a bad thing especially when it is a final end to long suffering and pain, such as what Mom experienced in the last 5 years of her life. Mercifully, she was not aware of much in that time but it was plain that she was hurting. I did make it through this piece without crying... I did get a little lump in my throat in the "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me", but I made it through. We sang this anthem again on Good Shepherd Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Easter... no lumps in the throat this time!

We sang this for my mother's Mass, as well. I'm in our choir and we've sung this one for a number of Masses, particularly on 'Good Shepherd Sunday'-- it's a favorite! Normally, we had another lady who took the solo but I sang the solo part for the first time for Mom's Mass. It was hard not to cry, but it was lovely. I wrote to Howard Goodall as well for singing tips, as I wanted to do this lovely piece its due justice and yes, his response to me was also quite lovely. He seems like a very kind and helpful man. Condolences to you on the passing of your own mother... she was close to the same age as my own mom. May they both rest in peace. +

Our choir sang this for my mom's Memorial Mass, too. She passed away in 2015. We sing this anthem quite often, when the theme of the Mass is "The Good Shepherd". One of our lovely altos has sung the solo portion for years, and she does a beautiful job. But for my mother's Mass, I asked to sing that part (I'm a soprano in that same choir). Our director happily agreed so as part of learning the solo portion-- which isn't all that difficult, but I wanted to have it down cold so that I could get through without choking from emotion-- I also contacted Howard Goodall for his tips on how it should best be sung. I really wanted to honor Mom, the church (for graciously holding her Mass when she herself wasn't a parishioner... she lived in another state), and the composer. Mr. Goodall's reply was indeed gracious and helpful, and very kind. Since her Mass, the other soloist and I now take turns. She sang it several months ago, and my next turn is coming next week, on the fourth Sunday of Easter-- known as Good Shepherd Sunday. (4/22/2018)

I did struggle with the Catholic Church and it caused me alot of pain and heartbreak , since my childhood. I refuse now to be a member of any church and prefer to believe in God in the open fields. I am 70 years of age and I believe God is my friend and we have a strong friendship. It's wonderful to be mad at God, like I could be to best friends, the equality is dynamic. I would love to rewrite the Bible and actually I have rewritten the story of Adem and Eva for myself. Thank you once again , what a wonderful creation, that goes straight to the heart. I sang the solo for this back when I was a chorister. it will always have a special place in my heart, the words for this psalm are beautiful and combined with this tune - simply heavenly.

Apart from the obvious spiritual connotations this version makes me think of the the Vicar of Dibley (!) but also of absolutely beautiful Wells Cathedral - love that place.

Ann TwoShoes Wells Cathedral is absolutely phenomenal, I’m fortunate to live close to Wells and I visit it often (sorry this is 4 years late)

You don't have to be of any religion or even believe in God to appreciate Psalm 23, taken from the Old Testament. Howard Goodall put this gorgeous melody and harmony to music for 'Eternal Light,' his Mass for the Living, not for the deceased. Adopted by the Vicar of Dibley as its theme tune, it will never be forgotten and always remain popular. As a non practicing Jew, it often moves me to tears and I had it played at my daughter's funeral. When it comes to beautiful choral music, religion doesn't really come into it for me. It's simply very spiritual on a human/emotional level.
