This actually makes me a little angry, seeing this. I live in Norway, and the box set I have first of all has regular blue transparent covers, rather than the black ones you show here, and the fifth disc of each box (the one with the Costa Botes documentary on it) is actually taken from a completely different box set, so it doesn't even match the rest of the discs in the set! I guess those discs are from a set that was never released here, since they pulled this stunt, but come on! It's supposed to be a collector's item!

I can't decide whether to get it, I'm a massive lotr fan but I don't have extended edition, but it's also quite eapensive

At this point, probably best to wait for a future 4K release unless you can get the Blu-ray set for a good deal.

I ended up finding the extended edition on Blu-ray at a local charity shop. It only cost $35AU. That same day, I went over to the local Tender Center and found the Steelbook of the Theatrical Edition of the films on Blu-ray, which I also purchased that same day. It only cost $5AU from there. So in all I only had to pay $40AU for the lot. Not half bad!

Nice LOTR Boxset The Versions i have so far are the 2 Disc Theatrical Dvds as well as the 4 Disc Extended Dvds in the Big Boxset also i recently got the Extended Versions on Bluray but the versions i got were not in a Boxset they were in a Two disc Bluray with Part 1 and 2 inside it cost me to get all 3 for about £32.00 which is something like $ 27.50 i saved a lot of money because here in the UK that Extended Bluray Boxset is about over £100.00. I am keeping my Dvds for the Extras i am not going to get the new big Middle-earth boxset since i am happy with the DVD/Blurays i have at the minute as well as the cost which i heard was something like $700 to $900.

I know this video is 5 years old. But does anyone know of these come with Digital now? I picked up The Hobbit Trilogy box set and it came with Digital Codes. Just curious if the original Trilogy does now.

Optimus Yes, the theatricals don't have the best transfers, but the extended cuts are excellent.

TheBluRayCritic Yeah I bought the extended cuts myself a few months back. It looks gorgeous, absolutely fantastic. I've seen some good deals on the theatrical trilogy but I can't bring myself to by them when I enjoy the extended cuts so much more.

Actually it's the complete opposite. The theatrical cut retains all the color of the DVD versions, the extended has a weird filter over everything that drains the colors.

Yep... The 2010 theatrical Blu-rays are all encoded in VC-1 at about 20mbps, which is (from what I heard) inferior to Blu-ray's standard AVC, and the theatrical FotR has pretty bad Noise Reduction. The 2011 Blu-rays meanwhile, have AVC encodes ofabout 30mbps, and the extended FotR's green tint can be managable.

me personally I love the theatrical cuts better just gets you in and out in 3 hours however I do like the extended cuts too just for the extended scenes used to own the extended cuts on Blu ray myself i do think the theatrical cuts got screwed on Blu ray when it shouldn't have lots of people like me still love the theatrical versions I personally just bought the standard dvds because unfortunately where I live in Canada we do have the theatrical Blu Ray's but because they were so poorly reserved by fans most places in my area aside from a couple only carry the DVD versions of the theatrical cuts I mean your not missing much I guess but man Warner Bros should have given the theatrical cuts some love considering those version won all the awards and not the extended cuts there is my 5 cents

EVAN REID Exactly! The theatrical cuts have much better pacing and flow to them. They are far from being "butchered", plus, they are still pretty long. The extended editions suffer in their pacing and sometimes even tone (we interrupt this epic battle to give you light comedy on how slow the Ents are), but in turn give you more character moments, explore the world more and answer some minor unanswered questions and also restore elements that were popular in the book, but didn't really fit into the final version of the film. Overall you have a more unwieldy version of the film that gives you more of middle-earth. Both versions have their merits which is why it pains me that the theatrical editions are always excluded from big "complete saga" sets.

Yeah, to this day I've only ever seen the theatrical cuts and am still plenty satisfied with them. Not only are the theatrical versions plenty long as far as I'm concerned, but having 3 bonus discs on each extended movie is just stretching it a bit too far. Not everybody is up for sitting through such a gargantuan amount of behind-the-scenes material. A co-worker even offered to lend me her copies of the extended editions, and I declined cuz if I borrowed them and ended up loving them, I'd be too tempted to cough up that extra dough for them.

No, they do not. You have to buy each set separately. The theatrical cuts on Blu-ray are pretty cheap though.
