I’m pretty sure the stuff in the chest at the end of episode 2 is Mitrhril. The dwarves first discover it in Kzad Dum and it’s what drives them to dig deep deep enough to encounter the Balrog aka Durin’s Bane.

Btw y’all they do have access to The Third Age, just not the First age. They have rights to everything but the stories in the Silmarillion, which means that they can use pieces of lore here and there such as the Silmarils and mentions to Feanor, Morgoth etc. It is mentioned in the prologue to LoTR that Hobbits have existed long before the Third Age all the way back to “the elder days” in which Tolkien has said goes back to the end of the First Age, but just lived in secret and only really appeared in stories concerning Elves.

The sequence where they are about to go into valinor and you finally see for just a glimpse of what it actually looks like but it's just completely bathed in light. That is one of the best scenes I've seen in a live action fantasy film since the Arwyn chase in fellowship of the ring.

as a huge Tolkien fan I went in with very very low expectations and came out surprisingly amused by it. I definitely have some problems with it but overall I enjoyed my time and can't wait for the rest of the season

First off, always lovely to see the amazing Elyse Willems, and please give my love to Lucy, hope she gets well soon. ❤️❤️ I’m on the same page as you Andy, I’m loving this so far. Don’t know anything about LOTR except for the trilogy and this show is delivering for me. The visuals are great and I think the cast is solid so far. Galadriel is badass, Arondir is cool, Nori is starry-eyed, and the bromance between Elrond and Durin is heartwarming. Between this and HOTD, we eating.

So far the visuals, music, costumes, environments, and usage of the map during scene transitions are all top notch. Performances I'm lukewarm on for now except Galadriel is great. Pacing suffers a bit but I'm ok with it for the moment. The Harfoot stuff is the weakest but I'm sure it'll lead somewhere interesting. Also, great job hosting Andy!

Awesome to have Andy and Elyse doing a podcast together. I'm pretty much where Elyse is on the show, I feel conflicted because I enjoyed both episodes but have a fair amount of criticism. I won't bore everyone with every issue I have but I really don't like that they've made this huge show based on LOTR but they don't have all the rights, it makes no sense.

The rights to any TV show longer than 8 episodes weren't included with the package of rights recently purchased by Embracer. Those specific rights still belonged to the Tolkien estate, which is who Amazon negotiated with.

I don't know if anybody has mentioned it already but there wasn't a "say friend and enter" scene because that kind of magic doors were built by Celebrimbor and a dwarven smith with Mitril, which is most likely what they tease as the discovery in Khazad Dum, so they'll be made in the future. Btw, mining so deep into Khazad Dum for Mitril is what made them find the balrog, Durin's Bane

1:01:40 I'm pretty certain the white glow in the chest is from Mithril. I think the dwarves dug deep enough to discover Mithril and that is what has caused the increase in prosperity since Elrond's last visit 20 years ago. And also why Durin III and Durin IV are a little suspicious of Elrond's timing of visit and trying to get rid of him quickly. They don't want to give up their new secret discovery but that is what inevitably also lead to them to ruin due to greed.

Definitely Istari, but we only know of 5 from the order of wizards. He looks the most Gandalf-like. Unless he is one of the blue wizards that we know very little about. My only hang up is they make it seem like the first time this has happened, they are all surprised by the meteorite, which means it is Curumo/Saruman who came first because Gandalf was 3rd to arrive I believe. But I guess they could say that these same people just didn’t see the other Maiar coming to middle earth.

@@joshuacameron5333 Yeah I think it's either a Maiar that flew under the radar or maybe they'll just say Olorin did a pre-Gandalf visit to Middle-earth. I like the former better. There is a version of events(I think from Unfinished Tales) where the Blue wizards got there before Saruman and went East but I don't know if there's a way they could get away with using them in any meaningful way.

It's awesome hearing how the two of them differed, since they both love the original material. A lot of the criticism I've seen is that the show is boring, but hearing Elyse sort of expand the idea that it's the characters standing in place giving exposition dumps instead of doing something while talking makes me understand the complaints a bit more. I have to wonder if Andy (and myself) are totally fine with it here because we'll sit there and watch hours of Vaatividya talking over a still frame.

I really didn't like the visuals. Too much green screen/cgi, especially with the elves. One moment they have an amazing panorama shot and the next is an obvious green screen. They really should've filmed more on location. And they failed to capture the elegance/arrogance of the Elves. It's still an enjoyable show, but it feels too much like cosplay. You can see that the sets, dirt etc. are fake > too forced to make it look real. Same with wooden carts and rocks.

I have seen so many negative reviews for this show it was nice to see and hear a positive take on the series even if that optimism might be incorrect it is to early to say let's all watch the series and then put in a full review. Me personally I don't expect much either even with a huge budget I don't really understand why this series would be important to the overall collection but I'm not very intelligible about all the collective information. I watched the first 2 episodes and I was surprisingly somewhat intrigued by some of these characters because I don't know some of them or there motives and want to see what there arc will be or if they just eat it . I like not knowing what will happen next . Nice screencast well done.

After seeing the first two episodes being trashed online in a few places, or at the very least just being called slow and uninteresting, I held off on watching right away and went in expecting not to like what I saw here. However, I actually enjoyed them both quite a bit, even the first episode that people hit the most! I don't think it's working across the board so far (i.e. Galadriel isn't that interesting to me yet and the Harfoot stuff is a little goofy for me), but I think it looks visually great most of the time, the acting is pretty good, and the music isn't too shabby! So far, I'm really invested in the watchtower elf and town healer plot, as well as enjoying the Elrond story. Just two episodes in, this show is a vast improvement over the Hobbit trilogy, but I think it's unfair to expect anything to equal the epicness of the LotR trilogy. Having not read the books and not being super up on the lore (outside of hearing some clips on the internet or anything from the Mordor video games) I see this show as something taking place in the world that is inspired and adapted from Tolkien's work without being a 1-to-1 recreation of anything and I think it's got a lot of potential. Hopefully it gets where I feel like it can go, because I'd love to have another cool fantasy show to watch.

It maybe the rights issue but them only using the name morgoth instead of melkor is canon. the elves changed his name at the end of the first age and never refers to him as melkor again.

I liked it well enough. We have to remember that sometimes TV shows still have to work out the kinks early on and there are very few, even the all-time greatest, that don't start off a little rough. And the best thing to say about the show is that it isn't offensively bad. There's a lot to like, and some things not to like. If they can iron out the kinks and flesh these characters out better it could truly be great one day soon. One things I didn't like was how weak they made many of the elves look besides Galadriel and new guy. Spineless. Petty. Wasn't cool with that. Hope they'll fix that eventually. Loved hearing you two talk about it. Looking forward to your thoughts for the whole season.

I wish i watched the show andy was watching bc im not sure how you could call this a massive success, 2 full hours in and i only care about one character and thats Durin. Like idk man, this show has personality and some heart but it somehow still feels hollow and artificial, it think there’s just too many characters and they’re moving too quickly between each one of them. This might be a hot take but if this is what the show is then i’ll take the hobbit over this any day of the week, and i don’t love those movies.

this show has the worst prequelitis I've ever seen. I only know the movies tangentially, never seen or read the original material but still there are no stakes in this show. I know half the cast is important cus I've heard there names in popular media. the other half? definitely gonna die by the end. I have no doubt bu the end of the show LotR fans are gonna get a bunch of "you're alone? we'll call you solo" and thats good for them but as a non fan 2 episodes in. 1 hour each? not gonna come back to this one

I love how all the positive reviews say how good it looks...it's almost like it's the only positive thing to talk about (which, to be fair, it is). Dialogue is amateurish, acting terrible (even worse when it comes to the not-hobbits who make it seem like a high school play), incredibly fake costumes and armor, a complete unlikeable mary sue of a protagonist who can't even be nice to her bff elrond and the guy who saved her. 2/10
