Definitely gonna go down in history as not only one of the most ambitious but most successful film projects. A real pinnacle of the golden age of film with practical effects blending with cg and all still on 35mm. It is Jackson's "masterpiece" and a masterpiece in the true sense of the word.

I somewhat agree, but there’s a lot in-depth you learn in film school that these people just vaguely talk about. These videos are good for becoming familiar with different elements of filmmaking, though.

I don't care if you don't like the film, if you like Harry Potter or Star Wars better but I hope we can all agree on this.. There will never be anything quite like The Lord of the Rings again. It's my favorite movie of all time ever since I've been a child and seeing how much effort really went in to the pre-production and production makes me appreciate it even more.

Fellowship of the ring is the best one of the trilogy in my book. Because its the perfect fantasy adventure. Third one is the best conclusion and probably the best war/apocalypse - end of times movies

They showed a shot with Gandalf riding through a field and Frodo is there talking with him about the elvish I think. Wonder what that's about and how much extra footage there was around!

Why does the non-graded material mostly look sharper, and better to my eyes in those comparrisons?

Earlier days of grading in that way maybe? I could see some of it being inconsistent with people not as practiced at it. There are definitely some shots in the movie that they take it too far and it stands out in not the best way. For example, outside the mines of moria they do some pretty severe desaturation with masking for saturation and highlighting of the faces and it just looks bizarre.

To supplement my earlier - search "outside moria extended" and there's a clip uploaded by TheLotrTV. At about 25 seconds in you can see they've done some significant work to accentuate and lift the shadows on Gandalf's face and, oh boy, is it ever a heavy grade.

@@LockdLoaded619 For sure they were the correct ones to be released in cinema and objectively work better as the plot drives alot more effectively (i.e. not ruining the surprise of Frodo's Mithril; although some bits slip such as the brooches and cloaks from Lothlorien being use in the second film not making much sense without the additional scene). For lovers of the films however (i.e. meeeeee) its amazing to see all the extra nuggets which gives greater context to the world they created (i.e. additional Boromir scenes really give him a better arc). So in short... I see why someone may prefer the theatrical and think they were better for the cinemas... but I dont think the extended editions ruined the brilliance - i think they enhanced it (at least for those who are a bit obsessed with the films!)
