The end is almost a representation of them finding peace or 'Heaven'. The darkness of the Ring had too much of an impact on Frodo. He was dying, so he could not stay.

It wasn't so much that Frodo was dying, as that the ordeal had left him with scars that would never heal. Both physical, from when the Witch King stabbed him on Weathertop, and spiritual from his time carrying the ring. The Undying Lands were the only place where he could find peace. What really gets me is that Tolkien must have been drawing on his own experiences in WW1; some wounds you can live with, but never really go away.

They sail for Valinor- like what the others said, "Elf heaven." It was once an island on the actual earth, but after a power-hungry man set foot on it (which was strictly forbidden by the Valor- who are kind of like angels- because it was not a place meant for humans), the Valor raised it/brought it to another plane of existence. That's why the elves and the few other, non-elves, can never return. Only in Valinor would Bilbo and Frodo (and one day, many years later, Sam, too, since he also briefly carried the ring) can heal and be at peace. Tolkien wrote many stories about how the events of The Lord of the Rings came to be. A whole mythology, history, and languages that he invented. You can read The Silmarillion (and other books he wrote) to get more info on it. It's fascinating. What's even cooler, to me, is that Tolkien invented the elvish language before he ever started writing his stories. He invented the language, and built the stories around it.

Frodo's wound was too severe, and the ring's power too corrupting. As a ring bearer, he was invited to go with the elves to the undying lands across the sea where the elves came from. It is there that the Valar (like angels) live, and Frodo can be healed and live a life like he's in Heaven. Gimli and Legolas eventually go as well. Frodo chose to forgive Sméagol and allowed him to live. If Frodo had killed Sméagol for betraying him, then the ring will not have been destroyed. Frodo’s mercy and kindness allowed evil to survive. But evil will always destroy itself because of greed, hubris, and a desire for power. That is the ultimate message of the books.
@tbessie4 ай бұрын
Well, things don't quite happen the same way in the book - eg. Gollum doesn't attack Frodo at Shelob's Lair, for instance. He DOES spare him when he attacks them near Mount Doom, and Frodo tells him that he is cursed to throw himself into the fire if he tries to get the ring again (which he does, tho' by accident). So it's not quite as it is in the movie.
@lao56104 ай бұрын
@@tbessie I’m more referring to Frodo and Golum’s who relationship throughout the books. Frodo never gave up hope that Sméagol could beat Gollum. That the good in him would defeat the evil. Frodo was wrong. But that decision to spare him because he believed Sméagol could be saved is what led to the destruction of the ring. Another interesting point is that even Frodo gave in to evil, and giving in to that evil also led to the rings destruction. Again, repeating the theme that evil and greed can only destroy. And will eventually destroy themselves. But also, evil and greed are inevitable. Even the most honorable will surrender to the temptation. And the only way to save yourself from evil is through the help of your friends and family who haven’t yet given in to the temptation.

Melkor is finally destroyed and peace is returned to the lands, but his servant escapes and takes up rssidence in the mortal lands across the sea, hiding his identity and going by the name Sauron. 23:08 The charge of the Rohirrim is partly based on the charge of the Winged Hussars at the Siege of Vienna in 1683. Like Rohan, the Polish force arrived late at the battle when the Ottoman Turkish army had almost taken the city. The Polish king immediately ordered his heavy cavalry (including the famed Winged Hussars) to charge, 18k against over 100k Turkish infantry, but the Turks were focused on attacking the city and didn't reorder their lines in time. The allied Polish and German force smashed through the Turks and utterly routed them. When a pure-bred war horse with an armoured rider on top is at full gallop, it'll just ride over anything that gets in its way; force = mass x acceleration. The Return of the King is one of the few films that conveys the sheer power of a cavalry charge. Most films about knights are more concerned with showing the skill of the rider, but a big part of their advantage on the battlefield was that they were on top of 500kg of horse.

Gondor/ King Aragorn are essentially many hundreds of miles away to the south. Think of Gondor as in Italy, the Shire as approximately England, and the Gray Havens as the far west of Ireland, distance wise. Frodo was essentially destroyed by the Ring - he couldn't let go of it, and the knife wound he recieved from the Witch King on Weathertop would never heal properly. As Ring Bearers, Bilbo and Frodo were allowed the rare privelege of returning west overseas to Valinor, where the Elves originated - essentially 'The Land of the Young' in Irish mythology, where their wounds (and age in Bilbo's case) would finally be healed.
@ThatBlackPiano4 ай бұрын
After the ring was destroyed: Frodo left Middle Earth, so that he may be fully healed. He was still able to feel the wound on his arm from the sword at the beginning, plus for being the ring-bearer and it nearly consuming him. Aragorn returned Gondor to its former glory, and ruled for 120 years. He had one son and two daughters. He was laid to rest in the House of the Kings in Minas Tirith with Gondor's past rulers and Arwen passed one year later. Gimli became the Lord of the Glittering Caves under Helm's Deep, as it was rich with Mithril. He kept his word to Galadriel, and encased the strands of hair within glass and treasured it. Legolas restored the woodlands of Middle-Earth that were ravaged by the war, along with adventuring with Gimli. After Aragorn's death, Legolas made a ship of his own in Ithilien, and left Middle-Earth to cross the sea to reunite with the rest of the elves in the Undying Lands. Gimli crossed the sea with Legolas, due to his close friendship with the elf, and was the only dwarf that was offered that honor. Samwise married Rosie and had 13 children. He was also elected Mayor of the Shire for seven consecutive seven-year terms (49 years.) Afterwards, Sam was given passage to the Undying Lands to reunite with Frodo, as Samwise was also a Ring-Bearer, even for a short time. Pippin became the 32nd Thane of the Shire, and held that position for 50 years. A Thane is usually the head of a clan. They own the land that their subjects live on. The land is usually granted by a king. I can't remember if Pippin was granted Thane by the Kingdom of Arnor or if they treated the Shire as a separate entity and Thane meant King of The Shire. He had one son named Faramir Took I, who later married Sam's daughter. After he retired as Thane, he traveled to Rohan and Gondor with Merry. He remained there for the rest of his life, and was entombed in the Hall of the Kings, and later moved to be laid to rest alongside Aragorn. Merry was knighted by King Eomer and become Master of Buckland. He married, and wrote a book. He had at least one son. At 102, he returned to Rohan and Gondor with Pippin, dying around the same time as Pippin. He was laid to rest in Gondor with Pippin, and later moved alongside Aragorn. Just for fun, I wanted to share more info about this world and some details about the characters -- Lord Denathore (the mean father/steward of Gondor in your upcoming part 2) is genuinely grieving AND insane. This is not made too clear in the movie, but Lord Denathore was horrible to Faramir because (according to Tolkien’s son) his wife died birthing him and in ancient times it was common for people to blame, hate, and shun such children. On top of this, Lord Denathore also had his own Palantir (the black ball Saruman uses to communicate w/ Sauron known as a Seeing Stone) like the one Saruman had. Like the ring, all things made by the Dark Lord/Sauron are full of his anger and ire and affects all those that use them or handle them. The first Dark Lord Melkor took some Elves hostage from Cuiviénen. He tortured them, beat them, and broke their bodies for generations into the first deformed and twisted beings known as Orcs. Sauron then took them and twisted them MORE by crossbreeding them further to make his Uruk-Hai. Gandalf is younger than Galadriel, for he is roughly only two thousand years old (‘only’ haha…) whereas Galadriel is many MANY millennia older than him. If you were to ask which is older: Galadriel or Olorin (Gandalf's natural form), well, that would be another matter. Gandalf is the physical incarnated human-like form of an immortal god-like/angelic being of supreme power. Keep in mind that Gandalf is one who was present and party to the creation of Arda (the Earth, our world) named "Olorin". He was tutored under Lorien (a Vala) and Nienna (one of the Aratar: ‘High Ones’), both of whom are essentially gods. Olorin has in fact been incarnated as an elf before he took his human Istari form. So Gandalf (as Gandalf) is a few millennia younger than Galadriel, but his essential substance (his soul or spirit, if you will) is/was existent ‘before’ Time was even a concept. A general list for all major characters during the LotR: Eowyn - 24 Eomer - 28 Pippin - 29 Faramir - 36 Merry - 37 Samwise - 39 Boromir - 41 Frodo - 51 Theoden - 71 Aragorn - 88 Denethor - 89 Bilbo - 129 Gimli - 140 Gollum - aprox. 589 Arwen - 2901 Legolas - 2931* (exact age not known, but Tolkien's son did say, years ago, that Legos has older siblings and he looks the most like his mother and that is why his father is over protective of him for many ages until he has a vision that Legolas will go to Aragon and befriend him; only then does he let him go. He leaves a boat for him that Legolas later takes to the Undying lands and brings elderly Gimli with him after they've travel the world together.) Radagast the Brown (Aiwendil) - Unknown (Like Gandalf he too was a Maia spirit of Yavanna from Valinor and inhabited peacefully in Middle-earth in the year 1000 3A. During his first years in Middle-earth, Radagast would protect the great forests.) Gandalf (Olórin) - 3000* (exact age is not specified, but he is considerably younger than both Galadriel and Elrond. He is not immortal nor a God, but more of an angelic being called a Maia. Gandalf walked in Middle-earth for approximately 2,019 years, un-aging and appearing as a grey bearded human of about 60 years old or so. He was around long before Middle-earth was created and before the Years of the Lamps. He, Saruman and Sauron are approximately the same age - give or take.) Saruman (Curumo) - 3300** (Guestimations in fandom based purely on ability and strengths only experience and age could grant) Sauron 3790** (Guestimations in fandom based purely on ability and strengths only experience and age could grant) Elrond - 6000+ Galadriel - 7000+ Alatar - Unknown (Alatar (Quenya - "After-Comer"), meaning Darkness-slayer, was a Maia and an immortal Istar Wizard. Technically all Ainur (Vala and Maia, which would include the Balrogs and Wizards) are the same age. They all entered Eä at the same time, and since time didn't exist outside of it, that meant they all started experiencing "age" at once. The timeline is a bit tricky to caculate, not helped by the fact that Tolkien changed his mind repeatedly throughout his life, but all the numbers are in the sources. As of the time the film takes place, 3019 T.A, the Ainur (and Earth in general) are EITHER 44,575 OR 575,850 years old. This depends on the source, in earlier works like the Silmarillion, Tolkien had the Valian Year at around 9.5 Solar years. By LotR, he bumped that up to 144 Solar Years. By this same metric, Galadriel would be either 8,361 or 26,922.

I had so much fun wiyh this, these are my favorite movies, i enjoy it so much seeing people discover them for the first time, your reaction was great! Thank you for reacting to these! The "plot" of the movie ended with the destruction of the Ring, but the "story", so to say, did not end until we saw the resolution of Frodo's journey. In the extended lore, Valinor, the Undying Lands, are west of the sea, where the Valar live. The Valar are like gods or angels that embody the powers of Middle Earth and act as it's guardians on behalf of Eru Illuvatar, who is the Creator of the the world. Only the elves know how to sail there, and they are all innately driven to return there eventually. At the end of the Third Age, after the events of the story, Galadriel and Elrond invited anyone who had ever carried the One Ring to go with them, because the damage it did to their bodies and minds could not be healed while they remained in Middle Earth, only in Valinor. It was a reward for their courage and sacrifice, and am analogy for the PTSD soldiers suffer in war. Fun facts - as Sam had also briefly carried the ring, he was also permitted to go, and about 60 years after the events of the story he finally went to the Grey Havens and across the sea to be reunited with Frodo in Valinor. Also, about 120 years after the events of the story, after the death of Aragorn, Legolas built a ship and sailed down the Anduin River to the sea. Due to their deep friendship he invited Gimli to accompany him, and Gimli became the first and only dwarf to ever enter the Undying Lands. Tolkein's world building is unparalleled, Middle Earth has one of the richest and most complex legendariums ever conceived. You xan get lost in the histories, genealogies and full-fledged language systems of Middle Earth, is an entire history to itself, a really fun rabbit hole to go down if you liked the movies. To understand where they were going you have to read or learn about "The Silmarillion", a book by Tolkien which explains the backstory and lore of middle earth. They go to the undying lands inhabitated by Ainur (think angels) and Eldar (Elves). It is not heaven but as close to heaven as one can get in this realm without dying. Very few immortals are ever allowed to go there. The Ainur are those that created the Istari aka Wizards like Gandalf, who are like lesser angels sent to middle earth to help mankind battle the forces of evil. Once you go to the undying lands you may not return to the rest of middle earth usually, though Morgoth a fallen Valar (think angel) did so and it is he who created Sauron and evil in the world. While Tolkien's universe is different then ours and the Abrahamic religions of our world, it closely holds certain metaphors of our own history and theologies.

All the reaction videos I've watched, especially from non-western countries, no one seems to understand what Frodo's departure on the ship actually represents. First off, the Elves are leaving Middle Earth to go across the sea to Valinor, the undying lands of the Elves. Elf Heaven. Elves do not die from old age or diseased. (Galadriel was about 8370 years old). They only die if their bodies are destroyed, and then their souls end up in Valinor as well. Only Elves can enter that land, unless they grant someone that special honor. Frodo was a Rign Bearer, and so he was granted that honor. As described in the movie and book, Frodo never healed from that stab wound. So, him stepping on that ship essentialy means he died. It was beautifully portrayed when he smiled again for the first time. He left all his pain and worries behind. He could finally rest. In the book it also says that when Sam was an old man and close to death, a ship came for him too. After all, he was a Ring Bearer as well if only for a short time, but it still counted. So Sam and Frodo were reunited in the end, and their friendship lasted forever.

Where did they go and why? Tolkien wrote a complete creation story complete with a Creator, spiritual hierarchy, and thousands of years of history for this. The Lore of Middle Earth in short: Eru Iluvatar created all things. He created angelic beings called Ainur to sing. He created the Earth. Some of the Ainur wanted to come to the earth to rule it. Those are called the Valar. They live in a part of the earth to the west of Middle Earth called Valinor. The Valar had lesser Ainur called Maiar as their servants. One of the Valar, Melchor (also known as Morgoth - Legolas mentioned him to Celeborn and Galadriel in the first movie when he told them they encountered a "balrog of Morgoth, for that's where the balrogs came from), went evil. His chief lieutenant was a Maia named Salron. That's where Salron comes from. He's not the only Maia in the Lord of the Rings. The balrog is a Maia. Saruman and Gandalf are also Maiar. The home of the elves is in Valinor with the Valar. That's why they are leaving Middle Earth. They are simply going home. Some elves have never known Valinor as home, but it's their home anyway. Elves are immortal. If they die in Middle Earth, their spirits go home to Valinor and the Valar will care for them. When men or Hobbits die, they go directly to Eru Ilivatar. The thing about Frodo and Bilbo is that they bore the evil ring of power and were forever scarred for it. They can't find healing except from the Valar. So the Valar have granted them to come a live in Valinor with them, be healed, and eventually pass on the Eru Iluvatar. Sam eventually is allowed to come to Valinor because he bore the ring for a short period. Interestingly, it's said that Gimli is allowed to go to Valinor with his friend Legolas. It's not said of the status of dwarves when they die. They weren't created by Eru Iluvatar. They were created by one of the Valar in honor of Eru Iluvatar. If Tolkien ever said where they go, I don't know it. An odd character whose true status identity is unknown didn't make it into the movies. This is Tom Bombadil. He lives next to the Shire and seems to look after the Hobbits. He's potentially the most powerful being in all the earth and apparently refuses to use his power. The ring has no affect on him at all. He may have been uniquely placed to influence the Hobbits if he didn't create them to begin with. We see how gollum went mad pretty quickly. However, the Hobbist have no particular desire for power though they might like a nice home and a fine meal. Otherwise, the Hobbits are generally man-kind after a fashion. So they might prize the ring for its beauty, but they have no desire to use its incredible power other than as a parlor trick to become invisible. It seems fitting that they would be associated with Tom Bombadil. So that's a very brief and limited run-down of the lore particularly with how it affects the Lord of the Rings story and where Bilbo and Frodo were off to with Gandalf, Galadriel, and Celeborn. Interestingly, between the Hobbits return to the Shire and the few years it took for Frodo and Bilbo to leave for Valinor, Gandalf spent a great deal of time talking with Tom Bombadil. That's mentioned in the book.

Frodo is too wounded to live in the world anymore. He departs Middle Earth for the undyling lands, removed from the circles of the world. Gandalf's mission is complete, he can return home to these lands, and the elves now leave Middle Earth to the world of Men, and return home where nothing fades.

They are sailing to the Undying Lands. Only elves and those they deem worthy can go there. Anyone who carried the ring is damaged in a way that can only be healed by going there. Even Sam eventually sails there since he carried the ring even for just a day.

The ships take them to the undying lands - heaven. The elves time has ended on earth and it’s the time of men. Frodo is given a place on the last boat because his spiritual and physical wounds are so great that he cannot live on earth any longer

The "'era" has changed so this is now the era of tall humans (we live in it now). All other go to the "real reality" on the west. Kind of this is depictioned in Silmarillionn book.

Still great movies on their own, regardless of the naysayers. Great fun to watch and worth it. There's no need to try to distract from the Habibi brothers enjoying them as they are still great cinema in their own right.

@@warriorpitbull1170 ]\ the actors themselves and production crew don't even feel good at all about those films due to the way the company was moving. the heart and soul that went into the original trilogy was definitively gone. yes, there is footage of this on youtube. Oh, and it also was part of how certain laws got passed in New Zealand which has led to our film industry (yes, I'm a kiwi) to be incredibly exploited by overseas interests. if you cared to know.

Hi, guys! So I want to explain some things that weren’t really explained well in the movie. The Witch-King (the wraith in the spiked crown) has curses put all over his body, so any who try to hurt him end up becoming wounded and cursed instead. The Witch King had a prophecy told that no Man could ever kill him. Merry and Eowyn could kill him because neither of them are Men. Merry is a Hobbit and Eowyn is a woman. The Elves are immortal, but their power and kingdoms started to fade over time. To escape fading away in a world without magic, they were all leaving Middle-Earth to go to Valinor, the home of the Elves. Valinor is an eternal place so they can live there forever in peace. Only Elves and those they allow can go there, which is why Bilbo, Gandalf and Frodo left on the ship. As for Frodo leaving, think back to that scene at the end of the movie where all the Hobbits are drinking together in silence while everyone else is partying like normal. That’s because NONE of the Hobbits besides Sam, Frodo, Merry, and Pippin know about how bad things were getting outside the Shire. They didn’t know about Orcs, or the war. Frodo had gone too far and seen too much to be able to come home and stay there in peace. He had changed too much and was hurt too much. It’s like a soldier coming back from war only to realize that nothing would ever be the same for him, and that was Tolkien’s experience fighting in WWI.

@Widdermaker2 ай бұрын
The Orcs encamped before Minas Tirith I believe numbered around 250,000. The amount left in Mordor near the end may have numbered only around 10,000. Sauron had also sent his armies northward to defeat Thranduil and his elf kingdom in Mirkwood (aka Greenwood), and the dwarves in the Lonely Mountain, and also Bard in Dale/Esgaroth. These realms are covered by “The Hobbit” (Bilbo’s earlier adventure - where he acquired the Ring). Almost every corner of Middle Earth was fighting Sauron’s forces, except those that allied themselves with him. It was like a World War. LOTR focuses on the main objective of Sauron: to recover the Ring and the defeat the strongest realms: Gondor/Rohan.

I had to stop and make a comment when you said, 'Beaten by a woman, humiliating." Ha, you must not know the history and power of a woman! You two should watch the series, "Vikings" Women throughout history are known as great warriors. There is even a saying, "Hell hath no fury, like a woman scorn!" A female will fight to the death JUST as well as a man.

In the original story, the women didn't do pretty much any fighting. But you know how Hollywood is with girlpower these days. I don't mind girlpower as long as its believable within the story. Instead of her chopping through the Nazgoul's entire neck, they should have had her put the sword into it's eye and brain. A katana is rated by how much flesh it can chop through and that neck would be quite a feat by any man. A swift sure stab would be much more believable. Like any movie though, if you can look past the plot holes and appreciate it for everything else, it makes it more enjoyable to watch.
@secretlyadragon47233 ай бұрын
'These days'? You do realise this movie was 20 years ago, right? And it's not like they replaced the whole cast with women. It's one woman doing one brave thing (two if you count Arwen's ride with Frodo in movie 1 which was actually done by an elf lord in the book) among all the endless brave feats by men in the entire trilogy and you still criticize it? Wow. It's hard in these streets! Woman can't catch a break. You kill a whole nazgul and they still say you didn't do it right.

I think you are being too faithful to the book itself. Books can show and/tell depending on the writer. However, films are all show with storytelling as almost an equal.
