Viggo Mortensen, the actor who plays Aragorn, actually bought the horse who plays Brego as well as Arwen's white horse and another horse Aragorn rode in the movies as soon as they were done filming. He kept Brego and the other horse until they died of old age a few years ago, and I think I read somewhere that he gifted Arwen's horse to the stuntwoman who rode it in the movie.

There's a sweet backstory to the one-eyed man at Helm's Deep who gave the order to fire the arrows; appearantly the actor was like that in real life and was super concious about it, hiding behind an eye patch, but the director Peter Jackson convinced him to take it off for that one scene, assuring him that it looked awesome, and since then the actor got many compliments on looking badass and was no longer insecure about it.

Here's why Aragorn looks so good for his age. His ancient ancestor was Elrond's brother. Elrond's father, Earendil, accomplished an impossible mission, defeating a great evil in ancient times. As a reward, Earendil's sons, Elrond and his brother, Elros, were allowed to choose whether they would live the life of a man or that of an elf. Elrond chose a long, elvish life, though he's still known as "Elrond Half-Elven", since his father was actually half elf and half human. Elrond's brother, Elros, chose to live his life as a man, though he and his descendants would still live much longer lives than regular men. Elros lived to be at least 500 years old. Elros and his followers were loyal to the gods that taught the elves everything they knew, and as a reward, the Gods gave Elros' people an island called Numenor. It was the land closest to the land of the gods. Eventually, even that kingdom lost its way, and a corrupt ruler, his mind twisted by Sauron who pretended to be a helpful advisor, tried to sail to war with the gods to conquer their land. The consequence was that the Numenorean fleet was destroyed and Numenor was swallowed in the sea. However, one of the royal men of that land remained loyal to the gods, and he and his followers were granted safe passage across the sea and back to Middle Earth. They established the greatest human kingdoms in Middle Earth, Arnor in the north, and Gondor in the south. That loyal king's name was Elendil, and his son was Isildur, both direct ancestors of Aragorn. Those were the two leaders of men that fought Sauron in the beginning of the first movie. Isildur was the one that kept the ring after defeating Sauron. Fun fact: Because Elrond had the power to choose between the lifespan of a man and that of an elf, his daughter, Arwen, Aragorn's love, has the same ability, which is why she was also able to choose to live a mortal life with Aragorn. Sorry, I love the world in these movies so much, and I read most of the books about it. It's hard not to share the information with others.

About Aragon’s age, he is a direct descendant of Elros, Elrond’s twin brother. The two possess both elf and human blood. At the end of the first age of Middle Earth the two were given the choice as to which heritage would predominate. Elrond chose his Elf side and remained immortal. Elros chose to be human and became mortal, but with a much longer life span than normal. His direct descendants share that longer lifespan

The brotherhood of Boromir and Faramir gets me every time and shows how truly noble Boromir actually was. Their father shows clear favoritism which many sons would use to their advantage but Boromir consistently sides with his (less favored) brother, loves him, and looks out for him. It also shows how corrupting the ring is. Boromir was a great, great man (that cared more for his brother than his own elevation and power) and even he fell to its influence simply by being near it. B&F deserve their own miniseries.

This may sound ridiculous but I saw Fellowship in the theater 12 TIMES. It became an activity several times a week once it went to "the cheap seats", which was the goofy little theater in my town that screened movies after their initial run and you could see a film that had been out for a few weeks or months for as cheap as one dollar on certain nights. I miss nights at that theater when I was a kid. All three movies ere shot in New Zealand, on both the North and South Islands, and the music was recorded in England. It took 18 months of principal photography, plus many weeks of pick-ups several months and even years after the original shoot. Peter Jackson and his crew actually spent over ten years involved in the project, from initial pre-planning through the final edit of the Extended Editions. And it was all worth it, IMO. By the way, Samwise "The Brave" Gamgee is still going to be your favorite character at the end. The End.

A quick fun fact: Tolkien based the Kingdom of Rohan on the Vikings, who spoke Old Norse. The Old Norse word particle, “éo”, means horse. So that means all of Rohan’s royal family has a name derived from horses. Here are some examples, though the translations aren’t exact: Théoden = horse-king Éomer = war horse Éowyn = beautiful horse

Frodo is 50 years old at this point in the movie. He was 33 when Bilbo left the Shire. The movie doesn't show this, but 17 years passed from that time until Gandalf got back to Frodo and told him to leave the Shire with the ring. Hobbits do age more slowly than men. Frodo also aged very slowly while he had the ring. When he sets out on his journey, he's 50 years old.

1: like I mentioned in your reaction to the first part. The movie was shot in New Zealand. Of course if you look at the map of middle earth it's Europe. You can actually take a tour to lots of the locations. 2: Andy Serkis not only did the voice to Gollum/Smeagol. He also wore a special CGI motion tracking suit. So all that crawling and moving around of the character Gollum/Smeagol was done by Andy Serkis. You should definitely check out the behind the scenes footage of him doing it. it's Very interesting. 3: in the scene where Aragorn kicked the helmet out of anger for "failing to save the hobbits" the actor Viggo Mortensen actually broke some of his toes and that scream was authentic pain from breaking his toes but he kept with the scenes till they called cut. That part was so good they actually kept it in the movie because it was so authentic and "real".

The actor playing Grima Wormtongue voiced Chuckie in "Child's Play". It was surprising how weak the gate was at Helm's deep, and it didn't even have a drawbridge. Also note that the "wild trees" had moved up out of Fangorn Forest to block the orcs. Those trees hadn't been there before, and they shredded the orcs that ran in there. Lastly, the novel of course went into much greater detail about Ent language and how long it took them to say anything. A couple of sample sentences for a rock, for example, and that merely saying hello might take the better part of a morning.

6:23 when aragorn says that the orks are about 1 day away from them, can we just take some time out to praise the orks smelling ability, as they were able to smell that they were being followed from over a day away, i didn't even realise smell could travel that far and that fast.

@@80sCanadian yes aragorn is refering to the vibration, but the orks are the ones who smell they are being persued, to be fair they have been running for days at that point, and probably reak of sweat, maybe dwarves are extra stinky, who knows?

The Elves actually weren't supposed to be at Helms Deep, they were added in the movies to bring more action and give the elves something to do. The Elves couldn't help at Helms Deep or Gondor because the entire north was also fighting Sauron's forces. The War in the North was not really mentioned in the trilogy.

I personally think it's a good film solution to showing that the elves were fighting too - merging their battle into the human battle. These films couldn't get long enough to portray that any better!

Christopher Lee (Saruman) was the only actor to meet J R R Tolkien before his death in 1973. He was passionate fan of middle earth that he took on playing wizards so that one day if a LOTR adaption was made he would be an ideal choice to play one. The scene with Eowyn’s stew was made because the catering company feeding bought them some nasty tasting food and Peter Jackson as a way of telling them that.😂

Keep in mind that the movies are like a good burger with home fries and a shake. The books are like fillet mignon with sauteed mushrooms and a fine wine. Then there's The Legendarium; think of it as an endless soup, salad and dessert bar that's never closed.😃 Tolkein was a linguist first. His interest was the old sagas and songs and creation mythology of Northern Europe. But there's a great big gap in them. Britain was conquered so many times that the myths and legends of the original Bretons was lost a long, long time ago. So as he played with making up a language ( which eventually became the speech of the High Elves ) he decided to make up a new world from the beginning of time, to replace what was lost. It was just a hobby and he never thought of publishing any of it. But in the 1930s he wrote The Hobbit for his children, straight out of Middle Earth, and the rest is history. There's so many KZbin channels these days that can help you break the Legendairum down but my favorites are TheGirlNextGondor, Tolkien Untangled, and the Red Book. Start with the trilogy and if you fall for it you can just keep falling.❤❤❤

Denethor II (Boromr’s father) was done dirty: He was way more noble & mighty in the books. Not to mention he contended wills with Sauron for decades nonstop & ontop of that even now he was never broken nor could Sauron alter what Denethor would see in the palantir even then he couldn’t control what Denethor had control of which was how he chose to interpret the visions given to him. Using it all to Gondor’s advantage! ❤ he also lit the beacons and got the women & children far away from the city longer ahead of time. So the movie butchered him as well as faramir but they didn’t butcher faramir as badly thankfully. He could have been shown to give Pippen his newest order to light the beacons so then it wouldn’t change the scene much at all as presented! The story here is Faramir’s birth ended up killing his mother Finduilas(named after an elvish princess from the era of Children Of Hùrin was set in);she was a Numenorean woman of the Faithful which her ancestors survived the Cataclysm of Númenor by the way! He was hurt deeply by her death. But also Aragorn when he went by the name gifted to him as Thorongil Denethor’s father basically overshadowing him from his own father so he is as psychology goes: treated Boromir the same way his father treated Aragorn/Thorongil. Note that Boromir and Faramir are half Númenorean which is a big thing as far as the legendarium goes! Denethor actually did many things the movie shows him not doing or neglecting. He was VERY competent and mighty in many craft and (even a lore-master to a degree). He had quite alot of mental and “magical” might which is why he could contend with Sauron too without being harmed in there process in any way!

The Two Towers is my favorite movie of all time. And that's saying a lot considering how incredible Fellowship and King are. The story telling, the emotional depth, the pacing, heroic battle scenes, it's flawless filmmaking. One thing that the movies do better than the books is the strong relationships between the characters. Samwise is Tolkien's favorite character, by the way. It's not too hard to see why.

Gandalf is not a man, he’s a Maiar, which is kinda like an angel. The Balrog he fights in the mines is ALSO a Maiar, but one that was corrupted by evil. So that fight is basically an angel against a demon. And that’s why Gandalf fears the Balrog: they are equals.

It’s such a delight to see people discover this singular story, and these beautiful films. I usually focus on how impeccable Tolkien’s writing is but we have to take a moment to appreciate the walking badassery; the living fucking legend that was Christopher Lee. Lee was a direct descendant of Emperor Charlemagne on his mother’s side. He would produce a metal album about his conquest… at the age of 92. When he was ten he was woken up to receive visitors; namely Prince Usopov, the man who assassinated Rasputin. Years later he would portray “The Mad Monk”, with the approval of Rasputins daughter (“You have his gaze”, she told him). At the onset of WW2 he enlisted as a fighter pilot. A visual defect prevented him from flying, so he wound up in North Africa attached to the first ever modern Special Forces group. Journalists spent years trying to get him to talk. He would ask, “Can you keep a secret? Well, so can I.” After the end of the war, and a brief stint tracking war criminals, he decided to become an actor, playing Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Mummy in career and genre-defining roles. Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond series, wanted Lee to play the titular Dr. No in the first Bond movie, but was passed over. He would however go on to play the titular Man with the Golden Gun. He was offered roles in both “Star Wars” and “Halloween” which he turned down and later deeply regretted. Finally he met JRR Tolkien in a pub and completely fan-boyed, stating how much he loved the books and how much he would love to play Gandalf if a film was ever made. Tolkien gave him his blessing. He was one of the most prolific actors in film, did more sword fights than any actor in film, spoke multiple languages, and married a fucking supermodel. And that’s barely scratching the surface. Christopher Lee was truly The Most Interesting Man in the World.

I am Impressed! So glad you came back with part 2 this quickly. You were already one of my favorites and you just got promoted. Is your big dog named Drogo? OMG. Frodo's father was named Drogo. If they'd killed Grima Wormtongue, he wouldn't have been there to kill Saruman. The Ents are the 'shepherds of the trees'. They're good guys. The trees that marched off to Helm's Deep are awake, but not Ents. They're angry and dangerous and full of hatred for Orcs.

Gollum/Smeagol was voiced and motion-captured by Andy Serkis. You'll remember him from Age of Ultron and Black Panther. In those movies, he was the South African thief that had the vibranium arm cannon. He got betrayed and killed by Killjoy. He's an incredible voice actor. He even did the voice for a couple of the orcs and Uruk Hai.

Previous rider was killed by the horse as it eventually perceived that that guy wasn’t strong enough before finding Felarof!)

I'm the 260th commenter here, so I don't know if anyone has already answered your first question... Both the Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit movie trilogy were filmed in New Zealand (10 years apart). It is director Peter Jackson's home country. You can actually visit Hobbiton now. It was initially torn down after filming but due to high demand from tourists, they brought it back & provide tours of that movie set. I believe there are also guided tours to other filming locations throughout New Zealand. It is one of my dream vacations as I've always wanted to visit New Zealand, especially after seeing these iconic movies.

He and I are close ! He always gives me warnings if someone’s a bit off and to even cut certain people out of my life. And also he bagged differently with different people even though he’s GREAT with people and gives the equal amount of love through association with me but if he does it to a deeper extend then I know he’s telling me they are good through and through.
