Alright! Had to re-edit because the first one got a copyright strike and honestly, I got a little disheartened because they took it down after a week and things were going so well. There was a point where I wanted to forget reactions altogether. But, I decided I'm going to move forward especially with the New Year right around the corner and just pick myself back up and keep going :) Hope you guys enjoy this one and hopefully, no more copy strike! 💜

The live action filming in New Zealand was all at once. Post-production like special effects took a year per film, which is why it came to theaters as one film per year. The Shire was started a year before filming, so the structures and landscape had time to weather and settle so it looked like it had been there for generations.

Aragorn it´s a Dúnedain, a sort of "royal" race among the men, blessed with long life as descents of Númenor (they have part of elves in their blood). That´s why he has 87 years old here, and age slow.

You’re right about the planning. The three films were filmed in New Zealand over the course of 18 months. The scripts were mostly ready at the time filming started, but they were making revisions up until the last second. Then the actors came back a year later for reshoots and ADR I believe. The cool thing is that there is so much unreleased footage that fans are hoping for an anniversary extended edition without any time constraints. A five hour LOTR movie? I’m in.

I love your reactions. They're so genuine and enthusiastic, but at the same time we can see that you completely understand the deeper themes that are going on in the story. You're not just shallowly marvelling at the spectacle; the story is touching you. 24:10 "Can't they, like, come back once the war is over anyway?" The journey that the Elves take back into the West is a one-way trip. Once they go back home, they can never return to Middle-earth. 37:22 "At least accompany them to Mordor. He saw that they're two halflings; they barely make a person." This tickled me so much! 37:42 We all need a friend like Sam. 39:24 Again, you're very insightful here. In the book of The Two Towers, Faramir finds the hobbits and then immediately releases them after Gollum is caught at the pool. He doesn't drag them all the way to Osgiliath; he immediately demonstrates that he's stronger than his brother by resisting the lure of the Ring and allowing Frodo and Sam to go on their way. It just seems like Peter Jackson was trying to stretch out Frodo and Sam's story in this movie so that he could incorporate things that happened later in the second book (The Two Towers) into the third movie instead.

The Lord of the Rings was written by Tolkien as one long book, with a single story. For practical publishing reasons, most printed editions split it into three volumes. To do the story justice in film the extended cut is 10 hours long, and even with that they cut some of the story out. The theatrical cut is shorter than that to fit how long an audience is willing to sit, and how many showings a day the theater wants.
@rnkelly36
@rnkelly36 Ай бұрын
Yes they filmed it all at once but what most people have to understand is that the three books were suppose to be one book. The publishing company forced Tolkien to make it three books because they felt the public would not accept the one large book of The Lord of the Rings. This was easy because of how Tolkien created the chapters but filming it all at once made sense because it is one story. The screenwriting changes to the story also makes it easy to break the movies up.
@folcotook3049

Additional fun fact, Peter Jackson originally pitched the project as a two movie project (plus one movie for The Hobbit), but New Line agreed to make it a trilogy instead, mirroring the books.
@jimglenn6972
@jimglenn6972 Ай бұрын
As far as The Hobbit goes, Tolkien wrote one book of fewer than 100,00 words. It was also a children’s book. If Jackson had made one movies and suck to the book, it would be a true movie of Tolkiens story. Unfortunately he made three movies. The screenwriters had to do a lot of work. The movie also has a lot of cgi. However, it does detail the dwarves and provides some backup to the Lord of the Rings.
@brandondano1995
@brandondano1995 Ай бұрын
iirc it was a studio decision to make The Hobbit a trilogy, with the Original plan being two movies. May be misremembering, and am unsure if Jackson wanted one or two movies, but (again, *if* I'm remembering correctly) pretty sure he never wanted to make three.

Sorry for the additional comment, but no one likes to rad an essay length comment. :P An additional fun fact about the making of the movie. To get the necessary number of voices for the moment Saruman's army is revealed, Jackson took a sound recording crew to a cricket match in Wellington, and got the crowd there, numbering in the tens of thousands, to chant to a script. There were some drunken yahoos yelling out things like, "We love ya Pete!" which spoiled much of it, but enough was obtained for them to be able to use in the movie.

How Peter Jackson filmed the trilogy was a risk, filming all 3 movies in a continuous 18 month period. If the First movie had flopped i am guessing they wouldn't have been a second. Also the film alot of extra scenes, there are the extended editions and there are rumours of even longer cuts that have never been release.

I'm surprise no one has mentioned yet that Viggo Mortensen, in the scene where he kicks the orc helmet upon believing Merry and Pippin have been killed, broke his toe in the kicking. The cry of anguish he lets out is mostly a cry of pain and the breakage, which he bore in the moment to fuel the character moment. And in case you were wondering, no it wasn't your imagination that Treebeard sounded familiar, as he was voiced by Gimli actor John Rhys-Davies. Fun fact, it is stated in the books trolls were created by Morgoth, Sauron's boss, in mockery of Ents. And to answer a question, the bodies in the marshes are from the battle we see at the beginning of the first movie, buried in the aftermath and preserved by the encroaching marshes over time. Something a lot of people miss is Tolkien's writings is this belief that a character's moral code affects their physiology. Gollum, having been exposed to the Ring for centuries and being a highly immoral person, is pained by contact with ropes made by Elves which is infused with their energy. This pain is the result of their respective conflicting energy. Frodo also believes that, once Gollum goes back to being Smeagol, a more moral character, his body can in time change to the point he can eat Elvish food, ie the lembas. There is a lot more about this in the books, of course. for example, in The Silmarillion, the two last remaining sons of Feanor realize their blind following of the oath of their father (I won't give too many details to avoid spoilers), and the immoral deeds they committed in pursuance of this oath, has robbed them of any right to the Silmarillions, which end up burning them with the pure energy contained within, originating from the Two Trees of Valinor, of which the White Tree of Gondor is a descendant.

Unless you're mind is already accustomed to the use of such language, calling nephews and nieces (or to use the modern term niblings) sister-son and sister-daughter is a tad off-putting. Sorry to be 2 days late...was tied up this past weekend. I love the enthusiasm you put into your reaction/reviews. I have heard many folks say that the battle for helms deep is one of the most gripping near perfectly done battles ever. That's largely due to the use of practical effects. IF you get a chance to get a copy of the DVDs (yeah...I know who has physical media anymore)...the "extended" edition has several "extras" DVDs that show how they "did" everything in these 3 movies. The one's covering The Two Towers are especially fascinating (how they "filmed" the battle...at night...for nearly a month, how they created Gollum...remember this was 20 years ago!). I'm so glad your recognize the role Sam is playing...there is a comment about Sam I normally post in these reaction/reviews...but I'll save it to the final installment (you'll understand why). Looking forward to the reaction/review to Return of the King. Peace.

The movies put men in a dark light. The books have men in a better light. For example, Faramir in the books was never tempted by the Ring and never brought Frodo to the city, and would possibly have gone with Frodo, Sam and Smeagol to Mordor if he did not have responsibilities elsewhere. The men with Faramir did not beat Smeagol either, but only used as much force as they felt needed to subdue Smeagol when capturing him.

When Legolas said that line:"They're taking the Hobbits to Isengard" I deliberately played this sequence backwards several times just for fun. And this joke never seems to go out of style.

@@SnaxanReactionsI’m breaking tradition: there are some really great parts of The Hobbit. It isn’t as good as LOTR for a variety of reasons, but it’s still better than a lot of what’s being put out now. I had a love/hate relationship with the first season of Rings of Power, but I loved Season 2. Don’t compare it to LOTR, or you might want to punch the screen. I’ve reread LOTRand the Silmarillion more times than I can count, and ROP is much better if I forget that and just enjoy it for itself. ROP kind of has a double-whammy against it: they only had the LOTR appendices to get information from, but people who love Tolkien’s legendarium have several books they’re familiar with. ROP is also up against Jackson’s adaptation of LOTR which many people, including me, feel is the greatest fantasy trilogy of all time. That’s why I think it’s more enjoyable if you just kick back, eat your favorite snack, and hopefully find at least two or three story-lines you like.

Tolkin wrote the book as one story. The Lord of the Rings. The publishers (and Jackson) split it into three books and movies for more money. A trilogy or series has each movie as a stand- alone story. Beginning, middle and a resolution at the end.

The Hobbit trilogy is 🔥🔥🔥
@futtbuckerson7394
@futtbuckerson7394 Ай бұрын
Be warned the Hobbit trilogy is a massive drop in quality plus it’s presented as a direct prequel which is not what the book is. As a consequence of stretching one book into 3 3+hr films while making shit up to fill time, those films lessen Lotr. Still there are some great bits, Martin Freeman as Bilbo chiefly, it’s just a shame after movie 1 the Hobbit barely has a role to play in a trilogy called The Hobbit. Still it’s not as anywhere near as bad as Rings of Power. PJ and Co at least love the world Tolkien created. The Amazon writers actively despise him and simply want an IP for their not even well written fan fiction
