21:50 Not sure how much you already know, but Gandalf and the other Istari (wizards) are Maiar. The divine beings of the world include the Valar (basically gods) and the Maiar (essentially angels). The five wizards were Maiar sent from Valinor, the realm of the gods, to Middle Earth after Sauron's defeat in the forms of unassuming old men to act as guides to the nations of men and keep an eye on Sauron's presence in the world. Gandalf's physical form was killed fighting the balrog and his soul returned to Valinor, where the Valar sent him back to Middle Earth with an upgrade and promotion to Saruman's former position as the head of the Istari. Hope that helps.

I always found Haldir’s death so heartbreaking and moving. It teaches us that, though “immortal,” Elves can still die and it shows that the battle against Sauron is worth a group of immortal beings risking their lives for. This is underscored in his final moment when he sees many of his dead brethren laying around him. I don’t think we are meant to connect with it as the death of a beloved character, it speaks to a larger dynamic and truth within the story.

Frodo’s trial isn’t really meant to be physical, of course it is because he’s traveling the world but it’s a test of will more than anything. Hobbits are physically unassuming and even feeble but they for the most part are good natured and caring people who want to do good. Frodo’s journey is mental and emotional triumph, not about what physical feats he was able to overcome. The mental strain of bearing the ring is what makes him a great hero.

As an OG Tolkien fan it is very unsettling to see people judging new adaptions on how well they preserve the legacy of the Jackson movies instead of the original source material. I'm glad you end with 'nothing is going to tarnish the legacy of this trilogy', that is the best attitude tot take! But I do kind of get the defensiveness of some fans. That's what I feel when I see how much the movies have displaced the books as the Original in the fanbase, like this video. :)

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is truly lightning in a bottle. Sure, we've gotten fantastic adaptations before, for example, Jurassic Park-a fantastic book and movie. But we have never seen nor will we get another series like TLOR. And I think the most important detail in the entire making of the trilogy is pre-production. They knew exactly what they were making and how to do it long before filming began. And it was made out of love for the source material and not greed. Ultimately, having a concise and prepared production is what partially crushed the Hobbit movies. And I'd love to see your take on the trilogy. I love the hobbit movies, flaws and all and I'd love to see your opinion on them.

I'm a good old fashioned fence sitter. For the most part, fellowship extended is a big + for me. It adds to the lore with hobbits, it adds more depth to aragorn and boromir, can't live without that. Two tower's has more extended scenes i can do without, however the faramir and boromir scene is so fucking good. Return if the kind is the worst one, other than Saruman death scene is a MUST, but I can't recall caring much for other additions. In fact, I've seen arguments that the extended scenes showing Aragon and the gang calling the ghosts to the battle, kinda sorta undercuts the battle tension because we know there's a literal army lf the undead coming to save the day. I have to concede to that tbh. Regardless i watch extended every year or two. Bilbo's narration in the beginning is my sleepy time go to.

One thing about LotR is that as great as Peter Jackson’s films are there’s a lot he had to leave out due to the sheer length of the books, it’s a shame that they seem to feel like his adaptations are untouchable and they can only make prequels and spinoffs to it, when there’s so many interesting ideas to still be mined from the source material. Ironically, I feel like the weird miniseries/seasonal tv show hybrid that the streaming landscape has created would actually be a really conducive medium for adapting the original trilogy fresh. They could do a season per book and really have time to do justice to the things they had to skip over or rush past in the movies but they wouldn’t have to face the pressures of making it episodic that they would’ve adapting it to television even just a few decades ago.

King NEEDS the extended edition. Its such a jumbled mess without the connective tissues that was added back in. I say this as someone who was fine with how they wrote Faramir in the movies: I get why some folks are annoyed by his being tempted by the Ring at all in the movie (or, really -- tempted to do something to gain his father's approval; it's pretty unclear whether he's actually tempted *by the Ring*). He's much more incorruptible in the books, and that's really important to a lot of people. (My personal feeling is that his portrayal in the books would not have worked that well on screen; and I understand the storytelling problem they were trying to solve. As I said, I feel like the movie suggests more that he was tempted to bring the Ring to his father to gain his father's approval -- and, like Boromir, thought it would help Gondor -- than that he, himself, was tempted by the Ring. So for me, he maintains his virtue, while going through an interesting arc that helps the on-screen story.)

I think my only real disagreement with you is your characterization of Frodo. I agree he is no great action hero in a traditional sense, notwithstanding a few explicit acts of heroism in the movies and few more depicted in the books. But the huge takeaway from his character is his ability to show restraint in the face of truly terrible power. The act of bearing the burden of carrying the ring alone would certainly corrupt the heart of any man or beast almost immediately. Think of Sméagol for instance. Frodo and Sméagol/gollum have intertwined fates for that very reason. They are two sides of the same coin. I would argue that Frodo is among the greatest of the heroes even if at times he can appear a bit meager and weak in the movies. Also a quick note to clarify. You had mentioned the ring accidentally ended up on Frodos finger during the prancing pony scene. I think it is rather suggested (granted a bit more explicitly in the book) that the ring has a mind of its own. Some mysterious power over its own fate. This is why he is so tempted to wear the ring when the Nazgûl are near. The ring wants to be found! Banger video though! Always love to hear a fresh perspective on the movies.

It's amazing they keep convincing people Macao actors make the performance and not the actual artist.
@gryphonvert4 сағат бұрын
I assume you mean "motion capture" here. And yeah, I agree. To be fair -- Andy Serkis gave an outstanding performance. He was physically there, flopping around in the streams and whatnot. He chose how to play Gollum and bring him alive vocally; and the CG character is based on Serkis's expressions and all. But. Even with *all of that*, this character could still have been a complete dud if the CG weren't up to the task of convincing you he was real; and he's so crucial to the story that him being a dud would have severely impacted the trilogy. I mean, we've all seen bad CG that takes us out of the story. Again, yes, the animators had Serkis's performance as a template, but that doesn't mean that them replicating that performance in a purely CG-animated character was "easy". It's an astonishing feat, and Gollum from 20+ years ago still holds up watching today. I know that people were saying that various award shows should have recognized Serkis for Gollum, but basically, what they really should have done was step outside the box, and give an award to Serkis PLUS all the animators, standing together. You can't separate one from the other. But Hollywood wasn't ready for that, at that time. I'm not sure they're ready for it even today.

54:30 yeah but the problem is that when they ran out of stuff to adapt, everything went to shit. Just because you are a fan of a property doesn't mean you can make a quality product. The writer of Andor has never been a mega fan of Star Wars, but he understands how to write great narratives, and that's what matters. And we even saw this with Peter Jackson; he made these movies, then also made the Hobbit trilogy which is not very good.

Have you ever read the books and the other stories that support them? You don't say specifically in the video (at least that I caught). If you haven't it's entirely worth doing it at least once. Yes, it's just as much of a journey but it gives you the proper understanding of why most of the extended scenes are there and what true purpose they serve. Most of it is character arc resolution, but it will help with your "why is this even here?" questions. This was a great video Thrifty. I hope you take the chance to delve into the larger world of Middle Earth. It's so worth it!

He drives away the Cave Troll in Moria, Fights the Witch King on WeatherTop before he's stabbed...Defies all the black rider's while wounded on the way to Rivendell all alone. Saves the Hobbits from the Barrow Wights in the Barrow Downs in the Book. & Initially Scares the Giant Spider Shelob off. & Is over all portrayed with more wisdom, maturity and Authority in the books.

I think the main problem with stories these days is one nobody wants to risk making their new story so they just adapt an existing story. The problem is modern writers don’t look at something and try to analyze what’s good about, said piece of media and think about how to build upon it while being respectful of what everybody loves about the original. But instead, they look at it as what was wrong with it, thinking that they are a far superior writer in every way. By doing so completely discarding, and in most cases outright insulting everything that made the original popular and insulting the fans who loved it. that doesn’t mean that the original piece of media was without flaws. But by going into a media thinking that you are going to “fix it” it’s most certainly not the way to go about adapting an existing franchise. Just as an example, I most often see writers fall into this trap when trying to inject a female or LGBTQ character into an existing franchise that had a little of either. Because they view the media as flawed because it didn’t have those characters in it they feel they’re justified in writing their characters into it as a sort of fix ignoring why those characters may or may not have been in that position. that doesn’t mean you can’t write those characters into that position, however writing a character that would reasonably fit within the existing media is very important. And just inserting your own wishful fantasy into whatever media you want is not writing, it is fanfiction. And most fanfiction sucks because the whims of the writer take precedent over the compelling nature of a story.

Dying legacy?? Absolutely not. The Hobbit trilogy wasn't great and people really don't like The Rings of Power but they don't effect how people think of the Peter Jackson LOTR film trilogy! The original LOTR film trilogy definitely stands alone and WAY above the others in MUCH different way than something like how Star Wars episodes 4-6 stand out in their fictional universe. It's actually kind of strange how it does! It's just SO freaking good that it's very much it's OWN thing
@justthinkingoutloud25389 сағат бұрын
I made my own video on this, but Frodo not being an epic hero was kind of the whole point of the story. It is not the power of men that defeats darkness. Frodo's simple humility and willingness to do whatever he could to bring about the end of the ring was of far more worth that any of his companions' heroism. As awesome as Aragorn or Gandalf's heroic moments were, they could never have done what Frodo did. That was Boromir's weakness, thinking that their strength was enough to defeat the enemy. Tolkien's point, and what Gandalf, Galadriel, and Aragorn understood was that only God can vanquish evil, and He can use even the most humble and unassuming instruments. Those who rely on their own strength are those prone to corruption. Besides, even if Frodo's feat wasn't as dramatic as others' it's probably the most admirable. He willingly submitted himself to suffer the influence of the greatest evil on the planet until it completely destroyed him. The toll that took on his mind and soul is hard to imagine. Sam is awesome, and Frodo couldn't have finished the quest without him, but calling him the real hero is like saying your friend who supports you when you're overcoming an addiction or fighting through depression is the real hero of your story. Frodo deserves all the credit as the story's hero, even if Elijah Wood can occasionally be rather annoying.
@killergrumpy13296 сағат бұрын
I think you guys are both wrong. Yes Frodo is the hero but is Sam and everyone else are too. The fellowship entirely deserved the credit. Giving it to just an individual is unfair because everyone sacrifices. Anyway, great take tho
@justthinkingoutloud25386 сағат бұрын
@killergrumpy1329 When I said "all the credit," I didn't meet that he and he alone deserves praise for his actions. Everyone in the fellowship was a hero, everyone had their part to play. I just meant that Frodo deserves all the credit of being considered the protagonist, which many say he didn't earn.

Yeah, honestly, I'm so glad they realized "Tolkien didn't want this; if he'd wanted it, he would have written it", and abandoned that idea. That test footage looked goofy. I feel like the prologue does a good job of representing Sauron as a giant humanoid figure, making him look powerful and intimidating. But there, he's swinging his mace and sending a dozen men flying with each stroke. Of course, that was with the One Ring, and if he'd been in the Battle of the Black Gate, he wouldn't have had it. But that would have been hard to convey to the audience -- like, how can Aragorn go toe to toe with him NOW? In the prologue, he seems like a legendary figure, and that's how he should stay. Putting him on the battlefield at the end would have diminished him. (I always really liked that he was just The Eye in these movies. I liked the idea that he was incorporeal likely *because* he didn't have the Ring.) Also, yeah... poor Frodo. Definitely more hardy and a stout enough fighter in the books.

Who am I to disagree with Thrifty... and yes, I am no one to disagree with Thrifty, but you are very sooo too much wrong about Sauron fighting in the end. He was never a fighter, unlike his daddy Morgoth who was winning duels left and right. Sauron fought in person only 2 times in history, lost the first fight to a girl with a dog, and lost the second one (to elf and a dude) along with the ring and his physical form. So choosing a petty squabble with some mortal human who will die on his own anyways in a blink of an eye (from Maia point of view) over the possibility to get the ring back... that would be soooo out of character, Rings of Power level stupid

@@thethriftytypewriter 1. Yes, he really is. 2. I'll go to bat for a lot of the dwarves too, and the way their actors brought them to life. You have only to look at past attempts to adapt The Hobbit to see that most people couldn't figure out how to differentiate the dwarves, so they wind up being an anonymous group, with only one or two (generally Thorin and Balin) standing out at all. I wouldn't say that every choice made about all the dwarf characters was a big winner; but I'd say that the majority of them are. And, 3. while the trilogy suffered first by being a trilogy (it should have been 2 movies, that's what Jackson wanted), and second by not having the pre-production time, you can still feel the way that all the main actors and many in the production deeply cared about the story and the world. No, I can't say it's fair to call RoP better than the Hobbit. Because RoP keeps demonstrating that it doesn't get Tolkien, and frankly, it doesn't get basic storytelling. (Or costuming.). I could find you a hundred fanfic writers who could put together a better and more cohesive treatment of the basic story they're trying to cover, and it would both be more coherent and feel more true to Middle Earth; and would have dialogue that sounded more like Tolkien's too. It's very difficult to point to any performance, character, or storyline in RoP that nails what it's trying to do. Meanwhile, fans have created edits of The Hobbit that strip away all of the excess and just cover the basics of the book, and it's great.

I’ve never seen the lord of the rings (like many movies you cover) so I’m excited to see how it holds up. I used to play the hobbit game on my grandmas computer in like 2003-4 and I loved it I just can’t bring myself to sit thru 9-12 hours of movies

Just watch the original if youve never seen it???? Yeah no bro you must delve into the world of middle earth you must become one with the extended editions 😂

Ive got the solution: Stop making them. Not every well fleshed out fictional universe needs to be the MCU. As brilliant as the source material is no matter how well you attempt to mass produce content from it you will end up spreading it thin.
@Ayem4279 сағат бұрын
Yeah, tbh I think as fans we need to just exercise some restraint and ignore anything they put out unless it's demonstrably worthwhile
@briana80889 сағат бұрын
Just stick to the trilogy, then. Let others enjoy the other LOTR works.
@BoHorn8 сағат бұрын
@@briana8088 Its an understandable thought process, but “just ignore the parts you dont like” becomes less reasonable as a thread of logic the more you follow where it ends. Its like if I said “just stick to the comments you like, then”. Well, why should that be how entertainment and discussion works? Kids are picky eaters and need to explore what they like and do not like and it can change. If they stuck to chicken nuggets and mac n cheese itd be a sad world of food.

Is the thumbnail AI? Looks bad
@thethriftytypewriter4 сағат бұрын
Nope it’s a combination of different things from artists that I found on DeviantArt. I thought they were great. I don’t use AI unless it’s specified on screen in the video.

@thethriftytypewriter I appreciate the clarification and your time. Even if I didn't like it, I would take a man-made thumbnail any day. Keep up the good work.

The rings of power was a woke nightmare and I'm not talking about racism. I'm not racist so when I say woke I'm not referring to racism. I'm talking about intersectional feminism and dei. Don't expect intelligence. I suppose it also can be diversity, equity and inclusion. People should be hired to act because they're good actors not because they're white, black, green, yellow or blue straight or gay. It should be based upon merit

I mean even if that stuff was not in the series it would still be bad. So much stuff is wrong with it, managed to get through season 1, hoping the second one would be better. Watched 5 minutes and then gave up on it.

Tolkien probably didn't think people wouldn't be able to read like they can't today, so he probably thought sauron and sauroman would be easy for people who should be literate. By the way this isnt a joke look at the literacy rates in the US alone its pathetic.
