Ask and ye shall receive. I've decided to continue making more lore videos as their reception is very solid. Thank you all for the interest. For this video we've got the lore of Kara no Kyoukai, one of my favorite anime. As always, be sure to watch the anime first, then check back in with this for a deeper understanding.
Depending on what anime I've seen and am passionate about, I can do other lore videos in the future. Let me know which anime you'd like to see me cover.

So if I'm understanding things correctly: the Fate franchise revolves around the guardians from the age of gods. Tsukihime revolves around the ancients and the dead apostles. And Kara no Kyokai revolves around people with origin powers. But what they all have in common is that the earth is trying to stop people from messing with something that could end the world. Did I get all of that right?

About Mitsuru. Both of his eyes were special. His right eye, the one that broke, allowed him to see the "ideal" future. The future is not set in stone, but rather comes about depending on our actions. What Mitsuru sees is a very specific future that only comes about as a result of very specific actions. What his LEFT eye allowed him to do was see EXACTLY how to do said actions. So he could see an optimal future with his right eye where he threw a can through a crowd of people and into a trash bin without hitting any of the people, and his left eye allowed him to know how to achieve said future. But with his right eye destroyed, his left eye now has nothing to achieve.

Another thing to add to the Nasuverse lore is the 'marked for sealing' thing: Touko and Kiritsugu's Father were basically wanted from the Magic Association for their work/accomplisments; that's why Kiritsugu's father was in that small island and Touko has a barrier around her office/workshop.

Well actually she has done something big. She is good at building puppets, and you can see she could even build herself, this is a technique that worth of a marked for sealing...What's more, she is good at Rune, which is also powerful and hard to complete.
@kamataro1482

Aoko isn't a sealing designate, since the Mage Association doesn't have enough balls to try and manipulate the Fifth Sorcerer. Touko is, though, since she's effectively made herself unkillable and the MA is jealous.

Some extra details in addition to this very well done video. -Modern magi do not practice what is called Magic from the Age of Gods. They mainly practice an inferior version of that, called Thaumaturgy. The difference is that Magic is the ability to actualize miracles, to create something from nothing, to turn lead into gold. It completely defies logic and has inexhaustible power, as it originates directly from the Root. Mystery plays a heavy part in its potency. Thaumaturgy is the natural result of humans gradually deviating from fairy tales and mythology in favor of understanding the world scientifically, decreasing Mystery and basically losing the ability to recreate Magic. It is inferior in that it follows the laws of the world to create phenomena. It shares similarities and works hand-in-hand with science, so magi can only do as much as science allows. That's why Medea vs Rin in FSN was child's play in terms of magical power. -The goal of magi is to reach the Root to understand the universe. Another goal of theirs is to recreate Magic, which spawns directly from the Root. Those who have reached it come back and established the Five Magics. The First and Fifth magic were the result of reaching the route, and the Second, Third, and Fourth were devised as ways to reach it. The only known holders of these Magics is Kischur Zelretch with the Second, Justeaze Einzbern with the Third, and Aoko Aozaki (Touko's sister) with the Fifth. They are the only true Magics in modern day. However, nobody has been documented to have touched the Root directly, as it is theorized they would cease to exist as they essentially return to the Root where they originated from. If they still had a conscience, they may become something akin to God, but no one has been seen doing so yet. -Aozaki Touko created Garan no Dou as one of many bases to hide from the Mage's Association. That's why, if you watched the movie, she mentioned she had a barrier around it that interferes with perception and was thus surprised Mikiya could find it. The reason she's running from the association is because of her peerless puppetry skills that, if she had no obstacles, could have gotten her to the Root. You can see some of it in KnK where it's revealed she has attained a sort of immortality by successfully replicating her own body, which comes alive when the active Touko dies, retaining the same memories and skills. She is avoiding getting a Sealing Designation from the Mage's Association so that she won't be monitored and have her work halted. -Kamekura Mitsuru has powers in both eyes. His right eye sees the future, while the left eye can see the steps in which to achieve that future. This may seem like a super OP power where Mitsuru can technically pull off any plan he wanted to, but Shiki's overpowered Mystic Eyes demonstrate a weakness in this Precognition power. In a sense, Mitsuru is not a precog, but rather one who projects a future reality within a space. He isn't actually reading the future like Shizune Seo is, but rather making one up. If you have to make up future, you inevitably have to work to make it happen, as opposed to actually reading a predetermined future that's outside of your control. That's the reason Shiki could cut his Precognition, because he was projecting an outcome that Shiki would die, which means it isn't guaranteed. -Satsuki Kurogiri's power involves speaking the Unified Language, the standardized language of the kingdom of Babylonia (not actually a thing btw) that has a strong connection to the Root. At the time of KnK he was the only Unified Linguist, and it functions like one of the most powerful forms of telepathy and hypnotism, as these words have a connection with the Root, so resisting the Unified Language is like rejecting yourself. -Mirai Fukuin, the "epilogue epilogue" where Mitsuru works for the Ryougi syndicate, has a final flashback of the male SHIKI on one of his walks, where he meets a recurring old fortuneteller, the only true precog in this whole series. SHIKI was stopped from killing the old lady after the latter accurately stated that SHIKI has absolutely no future, maybe alluding at him sacrificing himself during Shiki's coma, to which SHIKI realizes the fortuneteller is the real deal. However, the old lady added that despite his impending doom, his dream will become realized, which is to live alongside Kokutou. SHIKI understands that as the female Shiki living his dream, to which he finally attains peace of mind toward his feelings for Kokutou. It's an effectively bittersweet touch to the end of KnK that I feel needs to be mentioned. SHIKI never got a lot of screen time, but it's a testament to his character when he can still be so impactful in his appearances.

What you didn't mention in this video was how Kara no Kyoukai characters served as archetype characters for later Nasuverse works Tsukihime and Fate/Stay Night. So do I though that maybe because KnK anime is better than actual Tsukihime anime in characters, OST, and animation. Also what you probably didn't know was that KnK was the very first work Kinoko Nasu wrote KnK and that was when he was still in high school. KnK established the foundations of Nasuverse's magic system that would later be solidified in the Fate series. This is what I think the main Nasuverse chronology looks like: 1) Mahou Tsukai no Yoru - occurs some time during 1980s 2) Kara no Kyoukai 3) Tsukihime & Fate/Zero - both occur in the year 1994 4) Melty Blood 5) Fate/Stay Night - occurs 2004, 10 years after Fate/Zero 6) Fate/hollow ataraxia - occurs 6 months after FSN 7) Fate/Grand Order - occurs in year 2015 The future has two possible endings that occurs in the year 3000 - either Notes or Tsuki no Sango

I was under the impression that Fujino didn't lose her sensisitvity to pain at the end of the fight, as she keeps saying things like "I want to live" (I think) and when you say things like "I want" in Japanese, you end it with "itai," but "itai" also means "pain," meaning that she's both crying out from the hurt as well as lamenting the life slipping from her. (I think that's how it goes, anyways. It's been a long time, so it's very IIRC.)

Kara no kyoukai really gave that feeling of mystery and character development for Shiki from being conflicted to reaching mind peace thanks to Kokuto Mikiya, It's a masterpiece that I would never know of If I didn't dive to deep into the Nasuverse outside of the Fate series alone, while I still don't know If Shiki Ryougi and Shiki Nanaya or Tohno from Tsukihime are considered overlapments, but being that both Aozaki sisters, Touko and Aoko, exit in both, It'd be interesting to see how there are 2 Shikis with both having mystic eye of death perception would interact, being that Nanaya is basically a Mikiya version of Ryougi. Maybe It's a shared fate for both Aozaki sisters to meet a Shiki and teach them how to properly utilize those mystic eyes.

Yes, pretty much. Fate Grand Order has a Kara no Kyoukai event and Shiki is even a servant in the game. She also makes a cameo as the bonus boss for Fate Extra. The clock tower and mage's association are the same, and the root is the same as well.

thomnas ilikeswordfighting Yes. Magecraft works the same way. An example of punishment by the Deterrent Force Araya was trying to avoid very well could have been Archer from UBW showing up to kill him. Shiki is summonable as either an Assassin or Saber in Fate/Grand Order; her special crossover event should be in January 2018 for the English version of the game. Watch any Fate/Grand Order AMV to see a shot of Shiki rushing across the roof of a building at Artoria in her cloak and crown as she turns to face her, the rooftop lighting up in both golden flecks of Excalibur's power and the red lines of Shiki's Mystic Eyes before they clash with knife and sword drawn. She cameos in a bar in Carnival Phantasm. You see Cornelius Alba in Fate/Zero on the island of Kiritsugu's youth as he's burning ghouls. Touko and Natalia use the same brand of rare cigarettes. Touko also supplied Medusa's glasses in Stay Night to suppress her own Mystic Eyes. Her little sister Aoko is not in Fate, but features prominently in Tsukihime. On that note, Tsukihime's sequel fighting game, Melty Blood, features Shiki Ryougi as a fighter. That's about all I can think of off the top of my head.

It exists due to the building being his body, creating a zone where Alaya cannot reach. But as Touko states, by taking Shiki into the building, he allowed the counterforce in though Shiki.

Also now I know where the cat comes from :O Onward to collecting all the Mamiko Noto servants in FGO ~~~ xD

Just happened to find this clip now and I wish I found it years earlier. Served to clarify a whole lot about this movie series (seriously, out-of-order episodes confuse me like crazy). About yakuza families like the Ryougi clan, based on what I can understand, while many yakuza families deal with illegal stuff (drugs, smuggling, money laundering, etc.) the original purpose most yakuza clans serve is as a criminal deterrent group or gang of sorts. Remember how old Japan during the age of the samurai had Daimyo rule their own provinces? Those daimyo have to rely on clans that "reign in" the many small towns that make up their provincial territories. That's because having to employ a huge amount of soldiers all the time as a private army at all times to enforce governing rule can send any daimyo bankrupt in just a short amount of time. These soldiers mostly work as farmers among other production jobs when they're not soldiers during wartime after all. Now, these "clans" that reign in the small towns were called Yori-Oya and Yori-Ko if I recall correctly. These clans often have familial connections that span entire village and town populations to some extent, because back then your neighbor might as well be your in-laws that your sibling marries into and vice versa. Their world scope was quite small if they wanted to live stable in one place. Anyway, because of this network of relatives, these clans are often left to police and protect their own towns and villages, especially since bandits were still a thing and police (a.k.a. Doushin) weren't that present in places where the daimyo himself actually lived in. These clans would then ask for protection money and deal with trouble in their territories instead of passing all the peacekeeping to the daimyo all the time. Unfortunately, many clans like these will have corrupt practices or members taking advantage. Protection and security becomes extortion, and some even turn to crime syndicates themselves. These were what we now know as the earliest yakuza clans. Not all of them, but a lot of the oldest ones came from that flow, most probably like the Ryougi clan. Since extortion and taking the law into one's own hands is illegal now yakuza clans have become criminal syndicates in the eyes of the law. I assume the Ryougi clan are more to the traditional, more acceptable, version like the proper ones back in the day, seeing as another yakuza clan written by Nasu is the same (hint: Taiga). Finally, about the Root, or basically where all these Nasuverse magic comes from and why every magus in the story seems to be crazy enough to do mass murder without any guarantee it'll lead to a path to the Root and that never truly gets explained everywhere in specific as far as I recall. I believe Nasu is following something I call a "Chaos-Order Theory". In my own words, in the beginning there was nothing (a.k.a. Chaos). When the first instance of existence appeared in this nothingness "Order" was established. Everything in the world as we know it are made of chaos and order. Chaos allows us humans to make mistakes (or sins/crimes) while Order allows us to recognize those as mistakes. It is also Order that dictates the laws of physics (a.k.a. Nature), which is why magic and sorcery "defy" the laws of physics. Basically, in Nasu's world, magic is a power that lies behind Chaos. It's the power that gave birth to all of existence so go figure. People who come in contact with the Root basically come in contact with a path leading to the Root of all things, meaning Chaos. People who study magic are learning how to turn things of order into chaos to bring about the desired result/phenomenon. Basically, breaking the laws of physics or nature to do something. That's why it allows Magus with Root powers to do amazing things, because they have more access to Chaos to do things normally not possible under the influence of the rules imposed by Order (remember, existence/Order was made from Chaos). It's like having more supply of black paint to paint over white paint. The more black you add the more the influence of the white begins to get overwritten. The reason why those villain mages seem to do those crazy mass murdering things is because they are essentially trying to create chaos, perhaps without actually realizing it themselves. That is why they feel like what they're doing will bring them closer to the Root. I assume it is also why a magus will gain great power from finding a path/door to the Root, but must not open the "door". It's like finding a faucet to get some water versus opening the door and diving into the middle of an endless ocean with 100% no return. I think that's how it all works based on this theory of mine. In case you're looking for a connection of this theory to the Fate Series, let me point out that Tiamat (a.k.a. Beast II) is said to be the Sea of the Void (or nothingness/chaos) and is also said to be the discarded womb after it gave birth to all of existence during the genesis. In other words, Tiamat was the embodiment of the remains of the Chaos that was used to make the first instance of Order. That's why her Nammu look like monsters with no coherent proper form as living beings, similar to why Nrvnqsr Chaos looks quite similar as well (he has melded with so many other souls that he has turned into a being of chaos).

One more thing to clarify is that her clan is more a remnant of demon hunters than straight up yakuza. They were quite successful before demons became less common, and the family is mostly coasting in its laurels since then, retaining that high society structure with guards and servants.

Wow really nice video, thank you for the explanation which gives me several things that I haven't noticed while watching Kara no Kyoukai Everytime Shiki just goes on Mystic eyes of death perception mode with the epic music always makes the relatively short fight scene becomes amazing like what she did to the bomber guy in future gospel, and her declaration to Fujino that she can kill anything And also I really like how Nasu seems like reusing some of the non-fate characters like Tomoe and Shirou Emiya, Fujino Asagami who I think has kinda same dark background like Sakura (and also that rapist who still survive I think he might be the prototype to the bastard Shinji)

I, myself, am only after reading two first tomes of LN and I must say, story wise their are realm above movies. But movies do a good job, portraying the story. They just lack of necessary explanation of the most events or even mechanism behind all of those incredible powers(i.e. that Asagami Fujino awaken Clairvoyance at the end of her fight with Shiki or why exactly Shiki decided to spare her life). Well, we can only hope that they will translate more tomes to english(in my country we have already first and a second one in ours native language)

I really appreciate the explanation you gave for the whole Kara no Kyoukai series in a way that made more sense. I must confess that at first I only saw this movies mostly because they were made by the same anime studio of Fate, Ufotable. I like the main characters and I mostly understood the overarching plot of the series, but it took me a while to understand the plot of some of them (mostly movies 5 and 1) due to the fact that I saw them in release order. As UndertheScope said in his review: its not a series for everyone. Also, I know this is a minor detail, regarding Azaka´s feelings towards Kokutou, while a bit odd at first, I didn´t see them as something "perverse", the way the 6th movie presented it, I saw it simply as big love and devotion towards her brother in a way that she couldn´t express it.
