And prevents those of us that have it from attending things like birthday parties, having to leave early to use the bathroom at home because the air freshener is overwhelming in the bathroom at the restaurant or theater. Or even having to send a to-go coffee back because the cologne or scented hand lotion or soap on the barista's hands has transferred its odor onto your cup lid. Asthma attacks while driving are not safe for anyone.

Not to mention that Indiana shifted the border north to get more of Lake Michigan's coastline, that is why Michigan City is in Indiana now and not Michigan. Illinois did the same thing to Wisconsin for much the same reason. There were all kinds of border shenanigans around the Great Lakes. But you think living in Ray is confusing, I heard that there is at least one town in Maine that straddles the US-Canadian border, as in the main street itself is the border!

The Main state,canada story is true! But my school teacher in history class in Windsor ontario said Canada, British colonial territory owned Michigan and the border ran from about Detroit to Washington state. I was told that some Americans complained that they didn't have any northern hunting grounds,so she said the British let the Americans have Michigan! I've come across info that says the British held territory in some western lands now known as Washington and Idaho,and parts of Dakota ,which was later changed. Then, the 49th parrellell was decided as the US. Canada border. If all this is true,I can only say ,well,thats what I've been told about Michigan ,and then there was the fact that Detroit was ours till the war of 1812,were we lost it to you amarerican soldiers and from there it became American territory. The border up at lake if the Woods,was a major mistake,check it out! It should be straight accross !😅 But if you want you can give it back to Canada! That'll fix your border problem!😊

@@davidrussell8795 Tis true, all the way back to 1763, it was actually part of French-Canada first, I believe. Then, the Brits got it for about 20 years and then the American colonies became an independent country and got Michigan - 1783. We didn't get Detroit back by soldiers (it was held firmly for Canada) in the War of 1812, Canada/Britain was kind enough to give it back at the conclusion of the War of 1812. And. . . no take backs! ;-)

@@davidrussell8795 That is correct. The slogan in those early years was "54'40" or fight". That was well north into modern Canada, but the border was settled at the 49th parallel where it is today. That means that a small portion of of the US, south of the 49th, is actually on a piece of land surrounded by water, with Canada to the North. It also means that the southern part of Vancouver Island is south of the 49th parallel but all of that large island was given to Canada as part of the agreement.

Awesome in my neck of the woods. That building in Ray on the corner on Michigan side was my fathers business when I was a child. I remember going to post office on Indiana side to get mail. A banker moved a lot of the buildings that was ray out on ray clear lake road south of ray. He had a sheet metal business there, and then it was a building for lp gas. If I had known you were coming, I would have shown you how to get to the corner of Michigan and Indiana where it goes south in the woods. There's a plaque that was placed there a few years ago, and the corner was correct. As for the state line running east and west, Branch county maintains the road but if you ask a road commission they will tell you like you did that the road meanders back and forth from Indiana to Michigan along it. ​@RestlessViking Off of Todd road there's a fence line that goes west into the woods. Just park near the fence if it's not too wet and follow the fence west into the woods. You can't get to it very easy from the west side. If someone stops you, mention my last name you be okay, maybe lol And they surveyed that corner a while back and reset the marker. I can't remember the exact year.

@@FjHenderson From Google Streetview it looks like the corner is somewhat north of that fenceline. Like maybe 200 feet north. Do you think that is correct? I don't know what source Google used for the boundary line, but I do know those government shapefiles are not always as accurate as one might wish when you get down to finding things like this.

I once went to a meeting at our local high school. I was walking south towards an entrance, probably 15 yards from the intersection of the sidewalk and the walk to the door. There was a strong wind blowing at my back which should have carried any odor away from me. A woman reached that intersection at that very instant with perfume so strong that it nearly stopped me in my tracks to wait for it to dissipate. How much product can a person apply that it can defeat a 15mph wind? Even to someone not susceptible to an allergic reaction, that's offensive.

Even without an allergy, someone wearing a lot of perfume or cologne will cause me to have a migraine. I really hate it...just out in public somewhere and for something so trivial, I end up nauseous, irritated by light and sound and my only fix for it is to sleep. Having hemophilia on top of it, most of the pills that help with headache I can't touch because they're also blood thinners. *shrug* whaddya do?

@@94XJ There was a woman working at an office job in Manhattan, at a high-falutin' bank who, when she walked into the open suite, you knew she was there, even from 50 feet away. Within a minute or two, I'd have to leave and find fresh air. This went on for years(!) She went to Paris on vacation and came back a new woman. New hair, clothes and a cologne that was just a tad sweet and woody and a remarkable change from previously and, no longer a problem. I'd like to know which substance it was that gives me such a hard time but I know it's most common in after shampoo conditioners.

Was always amused by border differences in the Michiana area. I lived in Michigan City but drove to IU-South Bend for school which is in a different time zone - so going west I always arrived before I left. On New Years eve we could celebrate in New Buffalo, drive 10 miles to Michigan City and celebrate again!

There was a home west of South Bend Indiana shortly after cell towers were popping up everywhere. If you were in the east end of the home your phone showed Eastern Time zone . The west end of the home was in Central Time zone.

I had a coworker in Portland TN that had part of his home in Kentucky and he told me that the state/city taxed you by which state your mailbox was located. One of his neighbors was a Kentucky resident with a house mostly in Tennessee.

Split property tax is common. You can get that from straddling town or county lines. In Escourt Station, Maine and Escourt Canada you can even get it from straddling an international border that runs through some of the houses.

I was just at an Acres Preserve, Fawn River, right along the Indiana-Michigan border last Friday. It wasn't until I looked at the google maps aerial photo later that I realized one house at the entrance was in Michigan and the other in Indiana. Really cool rural area that I loved exploring.

Little Long Lake straddles the north-south running border between Michigan and Indiana. When I was growing up, there were different fishing, boating and daylight savings time zone issues to contend with. One thing interesting to note is the accuracy of initial surveys done by individuals around the time of the nation's founding. George Washington surveyed the area where some of my relatives lived in Virginia, whose property was a terminus of one such survey.

This was a fun story, thanks for making the video. As to the state governments and their progress on the issue, I think this needs to be weighed against the importance of the matter. Even though the states have expressed their desires to settle the borders finally and certainly, the lack of permanent markers has hardly caused any strife for the citizens of any of the states. I am quite okay with this being a low priority. Governments should always measure the needs of the citizenry when taking action. And failing to get a quorum during the pandemic seems reasonable enough considering the actual need to complete this task. Glad to see they are moving ahead, and will look forward to future videos about the subject.

Your state, no matter which, spends millions uselessly on creating no show jobs for relatives and friends. In Michigan our Governor has spent millions traveling to overseas meetings, and nearly a billion on Chinese battery factories that don't exist. Please try to understand in America today, politics is ruining everything, including your freedom. It is a fun story, but don't forget to assess the 'requirements' for their meeting. And, what these two did not show was the signers of the meeting. The battery plant you speak of is being opposed by some members of the community, and by some Republicans who think they can use this as a political weapon against Democrats. They would happily sink the economy to win control. As to the "no show jobs" you mention, there are fewer than you suggest, and scrupulously watched by the opposition in any state. This isn't the 1920s, it's the 2020s, where such corruption is hard to slip through. A previous Michigan Republican Speaker of the House has pleaded guilty in recent months of accepting bribes. But still, I accept that some sneaky deals happen from time to time, and political patronage exists. It happens less often than in the past, and the only fix is persistent diligence. If your goal is to get Republicans back in power, you're on the wrong side. The Michigan GOP is (like most of the rest of the country) in disarray and rife with corrupt actors. The previous GOP Attorney General is under an investigation from a special prosecutor for tampering with voting machines in an effort to overturn the results of the election. If your goal is to sow distrust of the government in general, I can only conclude that you are opposed to democracy and government of, by, and for the People. If you think some non-democratic form of government would be free of corruption, you are delusional and have no real knowledge of history.

About 16 years ago I was surveying and we were requested to bid on re-establishing the Indiana Michigan border. I live just south (couple hundred feet) of the original Indiana State line. Too bad we didn't win that bid, it would have been an interesting project. I lived in Northern Indiana when the parts of the state in the Eastern time zone stayed on standard time while Michigan and Ohio went on daylight savings time. Therefore, for part of the year, you had to know which side of the border you were on to know what time it was.

I found a spot where Indiana and Illinois overlap a couple feet too. It happened when the original government section corners on each side were originally set or lost ones were later replaced on what should have been a common line. Something very difficult to do until GPS was invented.

This situation probably isn't the only one in the country. Maybe it's the biggest one between states. But then, we also have counties. When I lived in western Pennsylvania, a local told me that the heavily-forested border of our county with the next one to the west was "undefined." Because, as he told it, any time a surveyor was sent out to secure the line, he "disappeared." Hmmm.

In Indiana there is no law that says an elected official has to report to work! Michigan lost some land that was given to Ohio too. That's how they got the UP.

Please update later on any progress. I’m from Michigan my whole life except my Army days but it’s always been home. I can see how each state though wishes Ron make sure they don’t lose even an inch of land to the other so this in the end could still end up in courts unless they work together and agree to agree on final findings. I find it amusing that the Hillsdale County Historical Society took the effort to mark the spot where the 3 states meet by not marking the spot but doing it 130ft north of it. To stand on the actual spot step off the road to the west where the gravel ( Michigan) road changes to chip and seal (Ohio)

I live in Edwardsburg MI that sits on the border. We also have the historic Sauk trail (US 12) Chicago road that goes through our town with alot of history tied to it. That might be a neat subjects to talk about 😊 thanks for your interesting content. I just subscribed. 😁

Take a look at some of the state lines of states bordering the Mississippi River. Those are complex, given that the state line is the river and the river has shifted a lot over the years.

Year right! In Kentucky, the Mississippi has cut a piece of Kentucky off and Kentucky State Police have to leave Kentucky, travel a few miles out of state to get to " The Island" to patrol it! Crazy borders!

The exact location of any border can land in federal court if a homeowner gets tax bills from two states. Usually judges go by where the house is. In one case the house itself straddled the line so they went for the front door

Reminds me of the time near the Ontario - Minnesota Border. One family had a homestead that each government claimed in their country. Finally it was settled and a representative of the U.S. Government visited the homestead and announced that the homestead was actually in the United States state of Minnesota. The owner of the homestead exclaimed, “Thank Goodness, I don’t think I could stand another Canadian Winter”.

Gotta be real careful, last time Ohio and Michigan surveyed a border there was a Michigan/ Ohio fist fight and Michigan ended up with the Upper Peninsula. Sometimes it's best to leave sleeping dogs...., well just sleep... Yikes! Oh and in other border news Michigan has another peninsula that is not attached to Michigan but attached to Ohio, leftover from the Toledo strip fight. Oh and better yet, there seems to be some support for the Upper Peninsula becoming the State of Superior.... Soooo... Nothing surprises me when you made this video about a disputed border.... If Indiana takes any land from Michigan after the border is resurveyed, I feel it would only be fair if Michigan is compensated with more land from Wisconsin to avoid any greater conflicts from taking place.

Heck, if you want a real example of an unsettled border, try the one between Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec. It was never surveyed, and in fact is disputed.

I remember about 30 years ago a house burned down because it was in Virginia but they had to go through West Virginia to get to it so neither fire department would come because they wouldn't leave their state and the people couldn't sue because they were both volunteer fire departments

14 years ago, I moved from upstate NY to Wisconsin. I very little about the history of WI and how it has NY connections. I often wondered why the Upper Penninsula was part of Michigan. It was because of the Toledo war. The land dispute between Ohio and Michigan was resolved by the federal government. Ohio was given the disputed land, and Michigan was given the Upper Penninsula of Wisconsin Territory to entice Michigan to become a state. The UP is like upstate NY and treated like a redheaded stepchild. As for the wooden markers, what were they thinking? Where I lived in NY was on the old wilderness boundary. The boundary was marked with concrete posts that can still be found today.

Right on. That is the story. In fact, the video posted last Saturday is the "Toledo War" story. Regarding the Upper Peninsula - I have never found a document that proves, in fact, that the Upper Peninsula was ever part of the Wisconsin Territory. To be sure, the Territory was formed before Michigan accepted the Frostbite Compromise. But, a Congressional Act of 15 June 1836 set aside the western portion of the UP for Michigan. But, Michigan still needed to accept the compromise. The Wisconsin Territory formed on July 3, 1836 (over two weeks after Congress set aside the UP) and the territory did not include any of the upper peninsula as far as I can find. Because Michigan didn't formally accept the compromise until 14 December 1836 - it seems the land was just there, ungoverned and unclaimed (except for the Congressional offer), and for about 6 months, the UP was apart of no state or territory.

@RestlessViking Yep. I've seen a few maps that had the UP as part of the Wisconsin Territory, but for some reason, I can't find them now. Maybe it's a bit of the Mandela Effect, lol. Either way, I think it was Chippewa Territory. Like upstate NY, it would be nice if the UP was its own state.

Very interesting topic. Naturally I assumed it was settled.😊 I geek out over stuff like this. I have seen a stone monument between Indiana and Illinois. I actually made it a walk from Indiana to into South Chicago where the monument stands, sadly not kept up. I did this during the lockdown in 2020 because no one really cared a couple of Hoosiers walking along the Lake Michigan Bike Path into Chicago. Your video really brought up a topic that I can press on my State officials. Bravo!

I used to work for the state of Indiana... They are JUST NOW getting to rebuilding Westville Correctional Facility... its going to be a modern facility.... they passed this act to do this in 1988.

"can be off by a few inches..." the border is a very very thin line and anything you use to mark that line a wider than the line. Even the original wood posts , which a few have actual found.

What was intended to be a straight line will also have bends up to a few degrees from old surveying methods. Straight line borders are actually also two lines abutting each other if the properties on each side have their own corners along what is supposed to be a common line. There will always be small gaps and overlaps.
