Ken, this is a film directed by Joel Schumacher who made a career about making movies that focused on style and coolness over substance. Also, the fact that it wasn’t too gory was what made it more accessible to mainstream audiences. This movie is more among my favorites because of the whole experience when I first went to see it in theaters with my friends when it was first released in theaters back in my freshman year of college.

@@midlevelmedia an R rating,that has always been and M rating in Australia ,which would make that and MA in America,but MA wasn’t around in America I believe when this came out,so it got slapped with and R.To me it’s and M rating all day long.But I wouldn’t compare this to extremely serious vampire movies as Lost boys has that element of comedy/slapstick in some sense with the Frog brothers and Grandpa, I believe it blends those two well so in context I wouldn’t compare it with Near Dark,Dusk till dawn,etc.Lost boys stands on its own here with its blend of serious/dash of comedy.And yes it has great nostalgic value as I was 15 when this came out.Thanks for you and your wife’s great presentations Ken…Kind regards Shayne

I was 9 when this came out. I'd seen it a couple times growing up & for some reason never fell in love with it. I'm a huge vampire fan, so it's surprising how few vampire movies I own. I never owned it until earlier this year, when I finally picked up the blu-ray. I had a feeling we'd get a 4K this year, but decided I needed to have it. Watching it then was the first time I fell in love with it. So many great actors, to start with. I've never considered this a horror movie. A lot of vampire movies are in a class themselves for me. They're campy, with a touch of scary & forbidden desire. That's how LB is. Complete opposite of say 30 Days Of Night or Let The Right One In, which are true horror movies, to me. I thought I'd be picking this up day 1 when it was announced. The cover art is bad for both the regular & steel. Didn't wanna spend $60 on the Zaavi edition. No new special features. (Really wish Shout!Factory would've done this one.) All reasons for me to wait for a sale or an eBay deal. I do think of it as a classic, now. If there weren't a million other must-buys coming out this fall, I would've grabbed it. 😎

You're probably right about the nostalgia factor I saw the film in the movie's 1987 and think it's one of the best. It's also because of its influence on the genre it invented the cool vampire before this they were guys running around in capes with plastic teeth.

This is absolutely the thing about The Lost Boys (and Near Dark) in my opinion. I was an adult when it came out and loved it. But 35 years later, and post-Buffy, you don't get "The Shock Of The New" in the same way.

OMG! So I just got my copy in and a day early at that! You are not kidding about the picture quality. It is AMAZING! Heck, the opening credits look like it could have been filmed today! For me there was no nostalgia factor for this movie. I saw it myself for the first time in the theater back in July. In fact that was, I believe the second video I did on my channel. At the time I thought it was alright, I got why people lived it. But it marinated. It stewed. I couldn’t stop thinking about it and I noticed Lost Boys stuff just EVERYWHERE! Now, I’m a full on fan of the movie! I love it! Can’t wait to delve further into the film once my dinner is done! Though I find it funny you couldn’t remember Jason Patric’s character’s name. They say it almost two hundred times!

I'm with you Ken this is why I am team FRIGHT NIGHT all day long... I really believe the only reason why these movies are so popular is because of The Cory's and Kieffer Sutherland.. I grew up watching this movie but even when I was a kid it just never scared me I laughed at this movie... But fright night was really on another level for Me!! I would buy this 4K bluray of lost boys if it was on sale for maybe $10! I really don't think it's worth any more than that. Frightening on the other hand I have the steelbook of that coming in day one!! Awesome review though as always..

Oh boy, gonna have to slightly disagree here Ken. The LOST BOYS was and is a Great "fun" Vampire movie to just chill and relax to. The saxophone guy is Definitely NOT the highlight of this vampire movie, but he is pretty good!. And NO, Buffy the (not so serious) Vampire Slayer is no where near this movie's caliber. I'd give the movie a 4.0 and the movie Soundtrack in this movie is hands down one of the Best I've heard (especially Cry Little Sister) on any Vampire movie!! It is always said that THE LOST BOYS is not to be taken seriously or things like that. OKAY. It is essentially a supernatural comedy. However, apart from its good cinematography. And contrary to what Corey Feldman said... The subject of vampirism is approached quite seriously in key aspects. (Added to the bat way in which they sleep) It is one of the first movies (perhaps the first) in which we see that vampires when they are wounded do not bleed. They don't lose blood. Something else sprouts from his wounds. I'm not saying this movie invented it. But for a vampire to lose blood from their wounds is nonsense, and has been systematically developed in more detail in later literature from the late 1980s onward with various vampire mythologies. I must get this 4K!!

Fun horror-light film and nostalgic gold for us that got to experience this amazing period of time as young adolescent. Very much looking forward to upgrading this, but since we rewatched this in the spring, no need to rush to get it. I did get Poltergeist as its been a year or so since we rewatched that and it will be so great to bump it up next to E.T. this Oct. The original artwork should always be on the flip.

Aw man I’m bummed you didn’t find the same love for the Lost Boys that most of have. I was obsessed with the movie in high school and it’s pretty much a once a month watch for me. I love everything about the film from Thomas Newman’s score and the awesome soundtrack, the actors, the direction, the make up and locations are fantastic. I had a huge crush on Jamie Gertz as well. I’ve been to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk (not a carnival) twice and visited the locations from the movie. I agree Diana Weist is the perfect mom. (Pronounced weest) the 4K looks amazing and even the sound seem more crisp than ever for some reason. It will alway remain my favorite vampire movie and in my top 10 horror movies of all time.

My first memory of this classic, was on VHS. I bought it home from the video rental store and the lazy so and so who had it before me didn't rewind the tape, so when I pressed play, the movie started where David, Kiefer's character, was thrown on the antlers near towards the end. What a spoiler.

Ok first thing the lost boys wasn't made as a blood and guts vampire horror movie. It has style its a movie where you sit back with popcorn and a soda and let the movie bring you into it's world. It wasn't made to win an Oscar and I'm happy it wasn't the majority of those movies are boring suck so hard. The chemistry between Jason Patric and jamie gertz come on she's possible a vampire he doesn't know for sure he thinks she might be David's girl jeez over think movies much. I don't watch movie reviews for these reasons. Can't anyone enjoy a movie and take it for what it's supposed to be. I say to reviewers if you don't like it, let's see you make it better. After watching some screen capture comparisons on KZbin it looks like they did quite abit of DNR to the 4K release, colors look more saturated but it looks so smoothed out. Not sure man...

I prefer Fright Night, and especially Near Dark, to The Lost Boys. Too many Coreys for me. "The Lost Boys" comes from Peter Pan. In the original (much darker) story, Peter Pan would kill them if they showed any sign they were aging.
