If ya think about it, Max was "playing along" and being naive, but still kind of called it out for what it is and straight up told him the truth even when being coy and non-specific. If you treat it as if as though Max was saying "I know what's happening here, you think I'm a Vampire" everything he says still works. "You think I'm a Vampire and want to steal your mother, but you're wrong. I'm a Vampire and want to be your friend."

If the vampire is invited in freely then ALL death rules simply change and do not apply at all If he just walked in without being invited, the garlic alone would affect him. Such a funny great acting scene. Esp with Ed Herrman, he plays nerdy here in that you not suspect him as the Vampire he comes in the house invited . Not of the Frogg brothers tricks are working on him. So ya watch the scene thinking uh yeh it gotta be him but nothin works but yet he knows the boys are trying to unmask him there they both know of each other. Then he flips table on Sam and them with the i am not trying to take ya mom away just wanna be pals so Sam and boys are oh great we messed this one up ruined moms date. So they are left feeling defeated and gotta keep searching. At the end of the moive it was Max the whole time as head vampire.

Lots of movies and books imply that vampires can eat food like a normal person, they just don't get any sustenance from what they consume. It's kind of like eating kids glue or play-doh, it's edible, but it doesn't do anything for you.

Max revealed in the end that when you invite a vampire into your house, it renders you powerless. I think a head vampire is a full-blooded vampire. Max was like the father to David and The Lost Boys. Michael became half-vampire when he drank the blood wine.
