Fallout 3, for many, was their introduction to the Fallout franchise. The sprawling world space, the intricate choices, and the compelling lore hooked many into the fascinating world of Fallout. Strangely enough though, Fallout 3 was not the first game in the franchise to hold that title. Many years prior, there once was a game also titled Fallout 3, developed by a completely different studio, set in a completely different location, and followed a completely different set of events. While many know and love the iteration of Fallout 3 we received, looking at this lost game offers an interesting glimpse into what could have been. And what could have been was once Fallout Van Buren.

Bro ima catch hella flak for this but i genuinely think baldurs gate 3 was an industry plant game it's seriously just a run of the mill crpg I'd honestly say dragon age is better it's not BAD but it made me so mad that after it was so hyped up when i played it it was just kinda eh on top of that i'd ONLY heard people talk about it AFTER awards it got (even though i was aware of its existence in early access for years)

As much as I love F3, F4 and NV, the 'Wasteland' games are really where it's at if you really want to recapture the feeling of the older Fallout games . The conversion to FPS is its own thing and enjoyable but for me at least it really doesn't come close to channeling the vibe of the older Fallout games the way Wasteland does- especially Wasteland 3 which is a gem of a game. Great video content , love your work,

The first Fallout was actually inspired BY the original Wasteland, man. That's why. Personally I would have liked to see if Van Buren would be the secret sauce that finally gelled the series for me, by smoothing out all the mechanics and letting me craft the character I wanted - the WAY I wanted; and have that be as impactful as it could be in the first two games. [Which I never beat, I'll admit. The time limit got me on the first game, and the second one I had no clue what the hell I was even supposed to do to level up and get anywhere] * It's kinda like saying I wish Troika had survived to make VTMB 2 or remake VTM: Redemption to be actually playable.

@@TheRavenShadowsWolf I know, though I've never played the very first wasteland and the 2nd was kind of a drag compared to the gem that is the 3rd :) If you're not turned off by how dated they are , do try to complete the first 2 fallouts, its worth it...plus these days I guess there's some fun mods to add...they're really not that hard to finish even the 1st with the timer and the second did have a lot of avenues to level up. You can always use a guide if only to get a sense of how to progress things. By the end I was a powerhouse in both :) Right there with you about Van Buren and VTMB 2 ...I'll just throw in Arcanum 2 that also never happened.

Best Timeline, New Vegas is Van Buren but in a more approachable to the general audience, and is considered by a lot of fallout fans as the best Fallout, Van Buren probably never would have been received as well.

3:10 Funnily enough, I've seen more people covering Van Buren than the cancelled Baldur's Gate III The Black Hound. Guess the current Baldur's Gate 3 we have now is way more impressive than Van Buren to New Vegas.

It is cool how we have two examples of Interplay CRPGs that had planned 3rd games but were picked up by different companies. Bethesda revamped the game by overhauling the whole thing into a similar but new genre. Larian would move as close to their source system as possible and created a masterpiece.

I adore BG3 but a lot of BG1/2 fans would disagree big time that BG3 stuck close to the source at all, regardless of how good it is. (And for that matter Fallout 3 was wildly successful, the whole reason people even know what Fallout is today and many would call that a "masterpiece")

It's about Van Buren, which is freely accessible to download on PC, and has been known about, documented, and played by thousands- potentially millions- of people for nearly 2 decades. It is not 'lost' as the title suggests, nor forgotten to time like the thumbnail implies. It's one of the most popular, well-known officially unreleased video games of of all time, right up there with Saints Row: Money Shot and Star Fox 2, the latter of which did eventually see official release in 2017, 22 years after its cancellation.

I remember back in college stumbling upon the wiki about the Van Buren cancelled stuff and all these enemies and areas and stuff. Nowhere ok there did it say it was actually available to find! Everything I've seen has said cancelled and makes it sound like it's unreleased, obviously unofficially and not published, but everything really did make it seem like it was lost to time. Have you played any of it yourself?

@@R4780Y I have no interest in games like Van Buren. I hate turn-based video games, I hat isometric perspectives, I hate point-and-click movement... I hate video games that try to be tabletop games. I will never play Fallout 1, 2, or Van Buren. I did however send a couple download links to someone I know who does like these games. Where did I find these links? ON the first page of a google search for 'download van buren'. Try it some time.

As far as I am concerned, New Vegas is Fallout 3. Fallout 3, 4 and 76 are an alternative timeline type thing. They’re merely based on the proper trilogy. Not a part of the proper series. Which will always be Fallout 1, 2 and New Vegas.

Well, it is a sad story... But looking at demo, it looks whack... Fallout tactics looks much better even today. If Van Buren came out like this , it would something like Gorkiy 17 or like Silent Storm at best. It wont give Fallout feeling , feeling of big and unique world...
