My theory is that Starman Fort was a possible design for the hub world. Rosalina would live in the castle, the toads on the disk, the rocket would be how Mario would travel, and I think the moons are just for the aesthetic. The big stars would be where grand stars would go. With all the power stars you collect, you gradually restore power to it and get more materials to upgrade the rocket.

It seems to me like the fortress was designed with a similar mindset to levels in Sunshine & 64, but as they switched to the level design of the original game, elements & concepts from the level were split off into other galaxies, eventually leaving Buoy Base as the only part of the fort to remain in the same level.

“I’m not that skilled” = “I’m lazy” Everyone starts somewhere. Talent alone can only take you so far if you don’t hone it. The person that remodelled and hacked into this didn’t necessarily start out reconstructing things like this well and right the first time around and there’s a lot of practice it took to get to this stage that you don’t see. I’m not that skilled at computer coding because it doesn’t come naturally to me, nor can I be bothered. I could learn and refine it if I wanted to, but I choose not to because it doesn’t interest or benefit me otherwise. It doesn’t mean I’m inherently unable to learn to become better because I’m currently “unskilled”.

I wonder if the reason why the concept art showed cables connecting the yellow platform to the roof was because in this very early level design, they planned to have you become electricity and ride the wire, an idea that then turned up in Odyssey? Would explain why the platform had electricity symbols all over it too, not the mention the "antenna" looks kind've like the pylons in Odyssey!

@casperfl4 жыл бұрын
Very late response but that's exactly what I was thinking too! And I'm honestly surprised it wasn't speculated on in the video itself given the wires and symbols. Reusing scrapped ideas in different forms is something Nintendo devs talk about a lot with their big series. It wouldn't be surprising for them to have come up with the idea for this, then remember it during Odyssey's development and see how it was a perfect fit for the capture mechanic. It doesn't make much sense in the context of Galaxy's mechanics but it still would have been very interesting

This level seems really amazing. The castle in general might've given inspiration for the castle on Rosalina's home planet, a.k.a. Gateway Galaxy. The side-planet that isn't a moon feels like either a secret star accessed through a hungry luma or a starting planet with a launch star. The landing pad could've had Captain Toad's ship land there during missions. I feel like this level could have fit into the game really well as maybe a Bedroom galaxy, and it's a true shame that it was removed from the final release. If I were an expert modder, I might recreate this level in my vision, but unfortunately I'm not.

I especially love Super Mario Galaxy, and if I had any game knowledge at all, I would use it to create my fangame idea: Super Mario Hyperspace. It's a fangame that's essentially SMG3, but it's Galaxy-themed space and planet exploration with Odyssey physics, a new foe and all this other story stuffs I haven't entirely planned out. Mario goes on an adventure with Cappy through all kinds of planets.... Of course, if I could make it a reality, I'd hunt for hours through unused levels in Mario games--especially ones like this. My theory for this level is that it once served as Bowser’s Airship Building World. Where it built his warships he needed for his galactic armada. Kinda like Kuat Drive Yards from Star Wars. However, at some point the ship yards were decommissioned by Bowser and his troops as it became too old and rusty. Often damaging itself due to its machinery being old and not as stable as it once was. Which led to it decaying with time, slowly corroding and withering itself away to the elements. Bowser’s abandonment of the ship construction yard also could be what led to it becoming what it is now. An old galaxy that is only used by Bowser for mining it’s resources for his empire. Which could probably explain the conversion part of what Swanky stated. Where it was turned into a mining facility operated by Boss Crab and other minions. Where the old cranes that were once used for Air Ship construction were converted into pulleys for bringing up materials mined by Boss Crab and the minions. But that’s just my opinion on the possible history of the forgotten level. If anyone has anything to say about this, please do share your thoughts on this! I’d love to read them! ^^ P.s the landing pad I think was probably for completed ships to be placed on or for returning ships to land. Hope this makes sense!

Christopher Moon this might have been his original appearance or at least the earliest appearance we know of so far. His name might have been sniffit bot if this level was completed. I have a theory. This was the first level they were working on right? What if Galaxy was originally going to have a similar structure to Sunshine and 64 and have 6 actual missions versus 3 and some extras per stage? But later on they decided to structure it to how it is now. The problem now lies the level is too massive. So instead of trying to make it fit with the more smaller levels, they scrapped it in favor of Bouy Base Galaxy. The structure looks like it'd fit more with 64 with it's wide open endedness. Just my thoughts. Feel free to prove me wrong though.

My theory is that Starman Fort was designed to be a large Earthbound reference. Now, before you rush to reply and call me an idiot, hear me out: The name of the area is already an Earthbound reference (Starmen were major enemies in the game) Starmen were aliens from space, which makes sense because Galaxy takes place in space. It's reasonable to assume Starmen have built forts and bases across the galaxy. The project was probably scrapped because the team verged too far from the Starmen theme (Starmen were very futuristic) and left it unfinished in the game's code.

I remember hearing somewhere that originally the intention with the Mario Galaxy series was to make the stages open and non-linear as was the case in Mario 64 and Sunshine. However, at some point the idea shifted towards the mostly linear levels we see in the games. This paradigm shift could explain why this level was not finished: its huge size and many different floors/areas suggest it was designed for that philosophy of open, non-linear levels with stars all over the place. Once that idea was abandoned, the level was just too large and open to make a linear level out of it. The main thing I wish they had done differently with the galaxy games is exactly that: open non-linear levels would have been so cool with the planetary theme. Imagine having a small solar system to explore looking for stars.

When I was young, I always liked the idea of hidden worlds in the games I played, I'm so glad there are videos like this.

I would love to see someone make a level based on this and the concept art. Based on its size (and variety) I imagine it being a hub world, and it may have even eventually evolved into Rosalina's starship.

Not sure of this was noticed or commented, but it looks like this level was redesigned and added to the game in the Unity version of the game due to the shadows and graphics of Mario and some textures. Whether it was done in Unity or in a proper emulator, it was done well, and gives proper insight to the origins and ideas for SMG. I give great props to all the people who helped bring this level to light and give a working, if janky, look at this level with the resources they had.

I don't know why, but it reminds me of one of the first levels of Super Mario 3D Land...

I wonder, if any of the designers for the game watched this video of their original plan being recreated, would their hearts be warmed that someone put it back together? I know mine is

This is always as crazy as ever to think that there's removed concept. Never expected that this level inspired to create mario galaxy in the first place. Such a cool concept in the first place though... :D

It would be cool to make a mod of this game that adds this Galaxy in as a fully-fledged level, that would be epic Maybe I’ll try to get into Mario Galaxy modding but this seems difficult to build, would be awesome tho
