Another cracking vlog. I suppose we should be thankful that the Great Northern "main" line from Leeds to Bradford via Bramley still survives as practically all of the Great Northern network has vanished.

Informative videos as ever. The additional line at Bramley would have carried tracks to Wortley Curve where there used to be a station at Armley. That line currently just undergrowth with tracks still present. Closed in 1985 to consternation of Bradfordians and provided a link to East Coast mainline.

Wish i knew you was about. Would of come with you. I live just near leeds city centre and used to live in bramley and still use that station to this day. I was just following your leeds underground video yesterday looking for thar arch where the lock used to be under the station car Park. Love knowing our old history about our city

If you go onto Google maps and go from the canal side of where the lock was and follow it straight up across the station and the river. Once there stick a pin in and go to Street View you get a clear picture of the river entrance to the lock.

I remember the second railway bridge on swinnow lane as I moved to Swinnow estate in 1967 on the right of the picture showing the second line with the Gordon’s advertising poster was a cricket field , On the left was a pond which in the late 70,s was filled in as a boy drowned in it . Next to the pond was a massive disused Brickworks factory, passed the 2 bridges was a iron foundry called Sloane & Davidson which is no longer there as fire station is in place of it

Hi Darren. Love ya vids. Stanningley station still exists today. Believe it’s called wood nook joinery and it’s very close to curry car park you mention. Instead of turning left out of there you would go right and it’s top of little side street. Looks exactly how you would imaging a small station would look. Great lads in there they would deffo let you have a look if you asked them.

Hi Darren, more great memories from yesteryear. Where the arches are at Stanningley Bottoms I recall is where the Bradford Trolley Buses used to turn round, all change for Leeds!!

Granville, you must mean the trams. The trolleybuses never made it any further east than Thornbury.

@@DaveinLeeds Would that be Leeds trams and Bradford Buses that met there. A long time ago and not my side of Leeds but remember visiting parental friends in Bradford and seeing the blue and cream BCT.

@@granvillefoster6719; I believe that the Leeds and Bradford trams ran on different gauges and that both ran to Stanningley, but the different gauges meant that through working was not possible, so a tram passenger would certainly have to change. I arrived in the area in the late 1960s and then, and for perhaps some time after, Bradford ran a no, 9 bus service to Stanningley, but the trolleybuses certainly didn't get any further than the big roundabout at Thornbury. Maybe someone else who reads this can clarify!

@@DaveinLeeds The Leeds and Bradford trams ran a through service between 1907 and 1918 using cars with sliding axles to change gauge from 4' (Bradford) to 4' 8.1/2" (Leeds). Leeds trams continued to run into Stanningley before turning up Richardshaw Lane as part of the Pudsey route which closed in 1939. Bradford trams continued to run to Stanningley until 1942, but trolleybuses never got beyond Thornbury roundabout

At 10.43 on the video, you will see an aisle at the side of the blue building. The bottom section has a different colour concrete. 17-18 years ago, the original concrete cracked and sank some 6-9 inches. When the builder came to repair it, he ended up pouring ton after ton of hardcore into it. If you look at the B&W image at 8.29, you can see the repair lines up with the tunnel entrance. Additionally, at the centre of the image, just out of sight at the top, there is a large circle track which was covered over with tarmac about 15 years ago. And, finally, the image at 10.57 is the rear of the big shed, the top right quarter of the image at 8.29.

Hi again , love the series on this area of railways. In 1955 &1957 all the schools in Pudsey were treated to train trips to The lakes and Morecambe first then Newcastle and Whitley bay on the second one. Both left from Stanningley station , can you imagine what a site that would be , all those kids being alkyd in crocodiles from half a dozen schools ! ! That would be about 400 of us all trooping down to the station.. The goods yard seemed to br enormous to me but as you know thing always seemed bigger when you are young.. Also the steps and bricked up tunnel at Stanningley station were accessed from the road via a PST which went past a row of cottages on their right hand side , one of my friends lived in one when he was first married. Watching your vids has brought a lot of memories back so thank you for that and keep it up

Hi! It’s me again, lol. Before Stanningley bypass the land the was a flooded lagoon, as kids we would visit it and play. In the water were three large aluminium doors filled with cork, and wood therefore they would float like a raft, sadly it was also used as a tipping point so there were hazardous materials such as broken glass and pottery. Still you could have fun pretending to be pirates, or castaways on a raft. Fond memories of playing around there. Frogs an tadpoles, wildlife too, it was a dump alright, but a venture park for us kids

Hi Darren , I have been following your videos with great interest for a while and I appreciate all the time and effort you put into your videos being a Leeds lad I find the local history very interesting the lost stations of Pudsey was amazing and informed me about the track beds I walk along with my dog daily if you ever get time there was a railway line from Arthington to Burley in Wharfedale I remember Otley station being demolished in the late 60's I was 10 and the line from from Guiesley to Yeadon station just off Henshaw lane there are still some bridges track beds and abutments remaining once again many thanks you make history interesting

When you were stood in the car park looking at the blocked tunnel to Stanningley Station on your left there were a line of small cottages which , at some time I think , were railway workers cottages . One our group of friends and his wife started their married life in one of them . The car park then was a grassy area

Great stuff Darren, I can remember the bridge on Mount Pleasant Road as I went to the primary school just up the road. The railway was in a deep cutting here but it leveled out as it entered the farm fields beyond, this was before the bypass was built. I can remember the underpass at Stanningley Station, there was a long covered walkway that sloped down to it from the station. It was quite spooky at night!

Wonderful memories. Thank you. My mates and I used to train spot at Bramley station in the mid to late 1950s and well remember the old station, then still in full use. I remember a station mistress who knew us well and collected our tickets on our return from Leeds Central after a full Saturday's train spotting. Six old pence (2.1/2 new pence) funded a return ticket to Leeds, a platform ticket in Leeds and a packet of chewing gum. I only travelled on the Pudsey loop once, when we got on the wrong train from Bradford Exchange instead of the direct train via Stanningley. If only that line was still there. It could have been a vital link in what should now be an electrified commuter network.

Hi Darren... great vid... brought back memories from the early 80's. .. I used to travel every day from Bramley to the city for work. The station then was even less, and there were certainly no trees on the other side of the tracks. I can also remember that on a regular basis trucks used to get stuck under the first bridge as it is very low. Next summer if uou want a week away, walk the Scarborough to Whitby line... you'll love it. Andy. South Australia

Great video. I never knew there was a station there. My dad worked for British Rail in the 70's and was based in Stanningley. I remember it being called 'Stanningley Yard'. I went there many times a a kid. Not sure if it's still there. It could well be that timber yard actually. My dad drove and operated lots of different railway plant machinery.

I do remember watching the trains on the line as a child on Tyersal Lane in Bradford back in the mid to late 1970s, the bridge is still there.

I used to work for The British Transport police and covered all these stations in the early 90’s so know the areas you’re walking very well. Hi again....I used to explore around and old ..what I thought was a quarry it’s got a chute into the canal and some old buildings are still there in the woods it’s down newly lane in Bramley just before the canal there’s a passing place on your right ..hop over the wall there and your in...be interesting to see what you make of it .....be careful there are some steep drops in there !

I lived just off mount pleasant road and as a kid we would use the disused railway to get to Fulneck, complete with packed lunch of course. We also used to play on the station at Bramley but i probably shouldn't say that hehe. Great memories!

Yet another great video which I have shared with a school mate who lived in Farsley but now works in Florida. Really pleased to hear of plans to explore what is left of the branch lines from the East Ardsley to Pudsey line. My childhood home was in Tingley and I have maps of the branch onto the Beeston and Batley line dated 1908 and 1932. Also an old photograph showing a train passing the Tingley gas works. Just to the right of bramley station was turner tanning ltd did my apprenticeship their they were sidings going into the sheds believe they were built for the war effort as the sheds were called gun shop etc. Excellent series of videos keep it up 👍

Nice video mate If you go on the bramley train in to Bradford and then in to Halifax you can see all the old track lines ect the train system was so much more back in the days. I love the history what was around us before I was born. Keep up the good work respect 💪

@@AdventureMe Hi forgot to mention Dewsbury "Central Station" to right of Dewsbury market and Station in pub. Building still there but Rail bed and station top platform and canopy has gone now. Now its all new Road layout and and the goods yard is a retail park..Matalan..Pound store....so on. If you want some info where bits are hidden. Give me a message. Id be glad to help you & put my clambering threw bushes over the last few years to some use..haha. ive linked Earlseaton threw to dewsbury Central on to Batley station then on to Batley park, and bits in Birstall. Batley Station up threw shawcross to chickenley .Theres so much great Brickwork , Archeres, Viaducts.. to be seen. There was a 3rd Dewsbury Station aswel. My Mum lived in an apartment in an old Wool Baron's mansion called Stanningley Hall. Her tree swing was dangerously close to the tracks 😆

I was a Child during WW2 and lived with my Grandma on Stanningley Town Street. Opposite Grandma's House was George Cohen's Munition Factory and they had a little Steam Engine, it used to cross the Road several times a day carrying stuff. we could hear it coming! I imagine it must have gone to the main Railway line. I went to Stanningley National School, but that's vanished! I can't find any history about that. Thank you for sharing.

Love all these videos. As a kid in the 70's (a'hem) I remember seeing the old railways being torn up and Leeds changing a lot. Good to see some of these hidden areas that I half remember from childhood. Any chance you can venture north one time to cover Harrogate and Ripon and maybe some of the old mines over near Pateley?

Look at the bottom of Gladstone terrace which is further towards Bramley Station direction from where the Stanningley station was. There is tunnel access. Which would take you to the rear of britvic.

Another point of interest, is at 10 minutes and 30 seconds. Walking up Richardshaw Lane just on the corner where you stopped to point down the road, you unwittingly passed by 2 concrete stubs protruding out of the pavement. In Victorian times these were stepping stones so that people could easily step down from stagecoaches, so that part of Stanningley has always been associated with transportation

It makes no sense why they didnt close the outer town of pudsey route instesd

At 11.16, left bottom quarter, there are 2 walls - one with rounded top and another coming off it at angle. I believe this to be the remains of the signal box…and if you push your way through the undergrowth to the hidden part of the wall (going toward the shed), you will see the remains of the buildings’ original fireplace!

At 10:20 in the video, you're at the old station entrance off Rickershaw Lane, opposite is the Great Northern Hotel, named after the railway company that built the line, a railway hotel near the station as you find at most railway stations, and it's still open, covid restrictions permitting.

Hi Darren - As expected, you certainley triggered some memories around the area. I spent all of my younger years there, and used Bramley & Stanningley stations as a kiddie with my parents. It was much grander in those days, and such a shame to see the new 'Bramley Bus Stop' as it is now. I also went through the Stanningley station underpass many times when I was young, and all the smells of railway grease came flooding back. I also remember how many rail lines there was in the goods yard at the back, and very surprised to see the goods shed still standing. A great recap of things past & present - Thank you. As an aside, the old bit of Pudsey loop you couldn't walk was of course dug out to make the Stanningley By-Pass as it is today. Blaster Bates was the one employed to use his explosive skills to remove the rock!

Hello. So I have a lot of history with the Lowtown area of the 'banking' as we used to call it near the 3 arched bridge. Just where you started this video, behind you was were my family home was for the first 20 years of my life. Just a couple of points out of interest. The cutting was far deeper than it is now after it was partially filled in with the bridge on Mount Pleasant being filled in and the actual stone walls knocked down and dumped to one side of the road on either side. The one on the overgrown bit are still there but pretty well buried now. On the school fields at St. Josephs. The old line ran down what is now the rugby pitch which drops down a lot from where you were stood. You can just make out the top of the rugby posts :) The branch line on Swinnow lane. You must have missed the name of the road that Britvic is on, Intercity Way. I do believe it follows the old branch route hence the name.

@@AdventureMe Yes I did, was going to comment but got distracted :D Great videos though, interesting to see the old haunts as we live in North Yorkshire now. The original 3 arched bridge was for land access for the farmer apparently. There's actually a preservation order on the bridge hence it's never been knocked down and replaced with houses. It's a shame it's being left to fall down but I guess that's the only way the council can sell the land eventually.

High Royds Hospital, Menston (the former "mental asylum) had its own railway constructed during construction of the hospital to transport building materials. It ran through what is now an ambulance station on Buckle Lane. The bridge is still there which is sealed but can still be seen. There is also the bed of the track that runs by the graveyard that houses unmarked graves with a bit of track commemorated with a plaque still visible. Maybe of interest to you?

I wonder if any other station in the UK has replaced three previous ones; New Pudsey replaced Lowtown, Greenside and Stanningley. Travelled to Stanningley on its last day, closed same day as Leeds Central.

@@AdventureMe a lot of places on your vids i passed & never knew were there simply because they have been destroyed & left for nature to take over also a lot of railway infrstructure got totally eradicated meaning miles of embankment dug up & used else where cuttings infilled, i live near an area where they did just that they removed an embankment that cut right thru a village & used it to fill in the cutting just north of it, the only thing that remains of this is a short wall of a road over bridge, now the area your following ive never been to & have very little knowledge on i have been north of leeds to wetherby & thorpe arch even that location i have limited info on, being originally a county durham lad i moved to south yorshire & gained a lot of info of the railway, mining, the powerstations & how they all tie in with each other but sadly i know very little about the villages they served
