Interesting. When gypsies first turned up in Europe they sometimes claimed they were a Lost Tribe. Indeed, an Israeli researcher just a few years back said they were the lost tribe of Simeon. At other times they claimed to be descended from Cain. The consensus among scholars seemed to be that they were making up whatever excuse they thought would play with the Christians.

I really enjoyed this candid lesson. My only question is, why would a Map titled, “A New Accurate Map of Negroland and the adjacent counties also Guinea..”, show Nigeria (mentioned in your talk) as being the “Kingdom of Juda or Whidah, Slave Coast”? Well, in the past was possible to say something so silly and sell books. But now we have a huge DNA sample from the middle east and the entire eurasia really. Any tiny percentage of DNA originated in that ancient israeli population would be indentified. This is not true. I think the most important part is that around 90+% of the peasants, workers, and whatnot of the 10 "lost" tribes never left during the Assyrian exile - only the elites claiming noble heredity. All of the regular people stayed, and were later called Samaritans. And note here that before the Assyrian conquest, Jerusalem was a backwater hill town. What makes that interesting is that when Judah's Jews came back from Babylonian exile, the Samaritans thought they came back as heretics who'd been corrupted by Babylonian religion. Samaritans had always considered Mount Gerizim as the holy place of their religion, long before Jerusalem built their temple in the backwater nation to their south. This heated schism is why the Parable of the Good Samaritan had so much weight back then - because Samaritans and Jews grew to hate each other. It would be like Soviets making a folk tale during the Cold War of "the Good American" who didn't act like a capitalist pig-dog. But it holds even more implications, because Samaritans weren't dispersed by the Romans after the Jewish rebellion. Many stayed, and most later converted to Christianity for a long time and later Islam. A modern Israeli Prime Minister went on to claim that most of the "Palestinians" in the area still had old Samaritan family names.

It's a little unfair to assume the names of the patriarchs are mythical characters to explain history, or that the time of Josiah was the first time these things were written down. How often throughout history are books/scrolls burned and hunted down in an attempt to erase the identity of the conquered people? Just because we don't have the physical copies doesn't mean it's necessarily proof it hadn't existed prior to the dates of what we have available to us. It's more plausible to understand that the full truth has been hidden on purpose by the winners of war throughout time. Nevertheless, it seems highly unlikely that such a huge majority of people over the entire course of history would consider Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and so forth, as genealogy to be identified so strongly with if they were just some made up characters to tell a story. Not having the mental capacity to understand something doesn't make it a myth.

Nov. ‘23. Jesus believers accept the Bible we have today is God’s Word for us, that He intended us to have. The Bible is pretty clear when it’s a parable (myth) and when it’s historical. He glossed over the hundreds of years of recorded Israel and Judah kings where they fought each other. These are not mythical characters. This leads to claims that Noah, and Adam and Eve are mythical as well…a slippery slope. I will stop short of a claim that I know who the descendants of 10 tribe Israel are (God declared that we wouldn’t be capable of narrowing that down by His own decree) but considering tiny Israel of today as the representation of all Israel would make God’s promise to Abraham a joke, which it surely is not (descendants numbered as the sands of the sea). I believe we must accept that God does not intend for us to know this, as well as not know the day or the hour. But as for me, the history of the Bible is important to validate the need for Christ to come, live a sinless life, die and be resurrected to reconcile His fallen creation to Him. I will not discount or discredit the Word.

You think your theory is more plausible? Obviously you’ve never played broken telephone. We can trace how oral traditions evolved during periods where records were better kept, then we can reasonably project that backwards in time to earlier time periods. On top of that, why do you assume that people living in the Bronze Age ancient near east were interested in preserving a historical account as we would understand it? The notion of history didn’t even exist. Every civilization from that time relied on myths to explain their own origins and the Canaanites who became the Israelites are no different.

What Kenite hypothesis? There were Cain's descendants the Kenites, as well as Smiths/Kenites. Moses never had any relationship with the former and I don't see any reason for creating a hypothesis regarding Smiths. There would be no point to keeping the Israelites separate from the Canaanites, while at the same time allowing them to mingle with Cain's descendants. Both groups were corrupted for the same reasons.

Abraham is the father of many nations, only Jacob is the father of the 12 tribes, DNA evidence prove this. Jesus was talking to the rulers of the temple, Herod and his family were Idumeans, The bible only focuses of the 12 tribes, nothing to do with Abrahams extended family. the tradition that the Beta Israel of Ethiopia are bnai dan is not a self identification, but rather a very old identification from outside jewish observers. It was revived among the haredim to sell them on a mass migration (operation solomon) at a point the ethiopian community was facing a particularly virulent persecution in ethiopia. It gets it's name from a prayer (chanted by Neil Diamond) said in the presence of three adult men holding a sefer torah renouncing all vows made in the coming year. That service was composed for the bnai anusim (many of which returned to normative judaism after immigrating to the netherlands).

@@jsonitsac that's really questionable from a historical perspective. It's a lot to get into here, but globally Jewish communities develop different traditions based on the surrounding culture. For instance south India has had a Jewish community since the second temple period. They traditionally don't eat beef, wear clothing nearly identical to the surrounding community, etc. An extra holiday specific to the community is really not unheard of either. As a former hasid, it was not uncommon to celebrate prior rebbe's birthdays even after centuries. The chabad sect has a holiday celebrating when they were able to retrieve the rebbe's library from the soviet union. Ethiopian Jewry practices a form of Judaism known as Haymanot, just as I'm Ashkenazi, and my cousins are Mizrachi. While commonly used as ethnic markers all of the above include subtle differences in practice, understanding of halacha, etc.

@@anopinion3469 it's from the old Spanish for little pig. The term was seen as derogatory at the time. Many of these individuals later escaped to Portugal, the Netherlands (at the time a Spanish possession but there was a greater degree of religious freedom there), and the Ottoman empire. They generally publicly returned to Judaism upon immigration. The term Anusim (and bnai anusim for their descendants) was used in the original kol nidre prayers referenced above. It's also a Jewish legal term positing that they are free from guilt according to Jewish Religious Law. Portugal later, with pressure from Spain, forcibly converted all jews without the option of leaving (a few did quietly immigrate to the Portuguese colonies in Southern India and quietly returned to Judaism and mixed with the local community which had existed from the second temple period). Interestingly several very publicly returned when refugees from Germany and France showed up during WWII. It's not a common term used anymore, nor was it commonly used by jews or the anusim in the past. Last names really are a separate issue as they were only developing at the time. There are a few such as Cordova/Cordoba and halevi that are known to be of at least possible Jewish origin, but again the vast majority of people in Spain (Jewish and non) would not have had petronymics at the time. I don't know of any that specifically see the last names as derogatory, but some who have converted to normative Judaism have taken specifically hebrew last names (as part of a larger trend among worldwide Jewry). Most who have done so have immigrated to Israel. Of note recently the current king of Spain has apologized for the role of his ancestors in the inquisition and has granted citizenship rights to those who can prove their ancestors left as a result. A nearly impossible task granted but a nice gesture.

The best part of the Ishmael Hagar narrative is the fact that God talks to in Meets Hagar more than once; because of them keeping the different versions of her story but Upon the news AB Sarah being able to give birth, the very first spoken quote of Abraham is "Oh that Ishmael might live before thee(me)" Very interesting because the writer of Genesis puts that Abraham bowed his head and thought to himself paraphrase 'how can she be pregnant and she's old', but it's interesting that the very first quote is not related to that whatsoever. It's literally his concern that this is some sort of replacement then he doesn't want to lose nor forget his actual first son. The other interesting thing is is that there's multiple versions of the story in Genesis, because the story of Hagar throwing Ishmael up under the bushes and Ishmael ( God Hears) his crying under the bushes is obviously a reference to a baby, not a almost adult, which is what Ishmael is in the main Cannon iewish Narrative of him being older and having some type of commentary about Jacob Basically Hagar is carrying Ishmael and she gets to the point where she's so exhausted and dehydrated she can't do it anymore, and she hides Ishmael as she cannot bear to see her child die This is not the behavior of the mother with a sixteen-year-old kid

Hagar was said to have left twice. Once when Ismael was a baby, Abraham conscience bothered him and he sent a servant to bring Hagar back to the house 🏠. Isaac was not born yet! Hagar left again when Ismael was 14 years old. Ismael and his mother was thrown out because he was mocking Isaac. I believe Isaac had down syndrome. The birthright was the right of the oldest son to inherit the lands owned by the father. Selling the birthright gave Jacob the right to inherit Issacs wealth.
