Other narration of Christianity about the crucifixion with a non-crucified Jesus One of the innovations of the first century was that of Florian, according to which Christ was a non-holy force and was able to take whatever shape or form he wanted. Hence when the Jews wanted to crucify him, he exchanged forms with Simon the Cyrene, thus Simon was crucified whilst Jesus was mocking the Jews the Basilides's teaching say,thus he himself did not suffer. Rather, a certain Simon of Cyrene was compelled to carry his cross for him. It was he who was ignorantly and erroneously crucified, being transfigured by him, so that he might be thought to be Jesus. Moreover, Jesus assumed the form of Simon, and stood by laughing at them -Irenaeus, Against Heresies Basilides's teachings were condemned as heretical by Irenaeus of Lyons(c. 130 - c. 200),[1] and by Hippolytus of Rome(c. 170 - c. 236),[2] although they had been evaluated more positively by Clement of Alexandria (c. 150 - c. 215).[3 Paul William Roberts reports in his 1995 travel narrative Journey of the Magi: In Search of the Birth of Jesus, that some contemporary Mandaeans hold that Thomas the Apostle was the twin brother of Jesus and was crucified in Jesus' place. The etymology of Thomas with respect to Thomas the Apostle and the name Judas(distinct from Judas Iscariot) that he is given in various early texts and traditions is proven by some as evidence of Jesus having had a twin. The name Thomas comes from the Aramaic “T’oma” meaning “the twin”. Thomas is also frequently referred to as Didymus, which is the Greek word for “twin”. There are also the non-Canonical gospels of Thomas in which Thomas is referred to as “Judas (also called “T’oma”)” and which describe Jesus and Judas Thomas as looking similar, and at one point Jesus has to explain to acquaintances that he is not Judas Thomas but Jesus: they would only have to do that if they look extremely similar. Thomas is one of two disciples which gets explicitly referred to as Jesus’ brother, the other being James. It’s often assumed this is a term of camaraderie, but perhaps it is literal: Thomas and Jesus are identical twins and James is their brother. Thomas was allegedly Jesus’ identical twin, otherwise known as Jude (Mark 6:3), or Didymus Judas Thomas (now before people start saying, why are you quoting pseudo/heretical work? Well it’s because the church fathers loved to lie they even bragged about themselves) third century Eusebius, the bishop of Caesarea who pioneered work giving a chronological account of the development of Early Christianity. He is often called the “Father of Church History.” But he is not a reliable source of information as he openly admits to lying in order to propagate what he believes is the truth Praeparatio Evangelica (Preparation for the Gospel), Book 12, Chapter 31 is titled as follows [9]: That it will be necessary sometimes to use falsehood as a remedy for the benefit of those who require such a mode of treatment.” Eusebius makes it absolutely clear in his teachings that lying is necessary when it comes to the Gospel message. Chapter 31 reads as follows: But even if the case were not such as our argument has now proved it to be, if a lawgiver, who is to be of ever so little use, could have ventured to tell any falsehood at all to the young for their good, is there any falsehood that he could have told more beneficial than this, and better able to make them all do everything that is just, not by compulsion but willingly?” [10] According to Eusebius it’s okay to lie, it’s okay to hold a false belief, if in the end the lie benefits someone Some Christian church fathers believed that lying was justified for a worthwhile cause Pseudo-Maximus, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Hilary of Poitiers, John Cassian, John Chrysostom, Dorotheus of Gaza, Palladius of Antioch, John Climacus, and Paulinus of Nola These church fathers believed that lying was justified or even righteous in some cases On the other hand St. Augustine This church father believed that every lie was a sin, and that only four types of falsehood were not lies. (he is one of the only church fathers I can find that is against lying) In contrast, most well-formed Catholics today believe that lying is not justified In summary, we should take any claims of heresy made against early Christian groups who believed that Jesus was not crucified, with a pinch of salt. History is written by the winners, and much of what we know about these early groups has been painted by their opponents.

Sadly we live in a "conspiracy theory" age where every "dominant narrative" has to be prejudged as false on the simple ground that it is "dominant". A handful of rogue scholars have made a ton of money advancing esoteric theories that will be pre-received by an audience committed to the view that the consensus "must" be wrong. James Tabor and Robert Eisenman are two of the best known but there are dozens of others, and their "groundbreaking" theories usually conflict with one another. They are not quite in Baigent/Leigh territory but they are awfully close. Don't buy into iconoclastic prejudice just because it sounds "new" and "edgy".

@1:59 CORRECTION: It is traditionally believed that John was the youngest of the apostles and survived all of them. He is said to have lived to old age, dying of natural causes at Ephesus sometime after AD 98, during the reign of Trajan, thus becoming the only apostle who did not die as a martyr.

One would have to say the Ebionites came first. Many scholars point them to being the original followers of James the brother of Jesus and Eisenman clearly shows it. The Jerusalem Church under James BEFORE Paul ever came along had a name, the followers just didn’t die off or convert to Paul’s church and give up their Jewish ways, they are the Ebionites. Both sects of Jesus and John the Baptist survived into our modern times over in the Middle East and have not died out

Eisenman is a crackpot. His writings are actually hilarious if you know anything about early Christianity. My favorite Eisenmanism is his insistence that any use of the Greek verb "ekballo" (to throw something) is actually a coded expression of Ba'al worship. He's not quite in Baigent/Leigh territory but he's close. And... show me where the Ebionites are still alive! I'd love to meet one. Unless you're arguing that Muslims are Ebionites, of course.

@@FourEyedOwl , I was using the King James version but the NIV does say roughly the same thing. God places all authority, all his enemies under jesus's feet. This means everyone becomes in subjection to Jesus with the exception of God the Father himself. It goes on to say that God the Father will become all things to all people in the end. Obviously I'm paraphrasing.

The disciples are consistently portrayed in the Gospels we have as being uncomprehending and totally misguided, including Peter. Remember the ‘get behind me Satan’ directed at Peter who he had just allegedly founded his ‘church’ upon. And as for the brother of Jesus why should he have any especial authority considering that Jesus had repudiated his family and warned us that his followers would find their close friends and family to be their worst enemies. Listen to Jesus not Paul, not Peter, not James the ‘Just’ and whoever else attempts to assume unearned influence. Where two or three are gathered in my name there am I in the midst. That is what he meant by his church. Proximity to Jesus in the flesh confers no authority whatsoever. That is the message of the Gospel.

Yes, and no. He also prayed for them in hopes that people would believe in their word (John 17). His ideas are that we should listen to the message. The message is also found in Paul, Peter and including in you and me. Because the "message", "logos", the "anointing", the "Christ", the "kingdom", whatever you want to call it, is in you. But then again of course, what he's saying is not to make it "authority." Don't make it religion, in other words. I truly believe that Paul was also on the same track. He has plenty of passages where he mentions this. He totally dismisses Peter and James as having any sort of final authority. He also speaks out against any sort of legality and how faith makes you righteous. In fact, that is his biggest contention with James. The problem is that, no matter who you are, your ego also gets in the way. And it always definitely gets in the way of the message.

@@longcastle4863 you misread Jesus when he says the kingdom of heaven is at hand. He's not saying it's coming soon. He's saying the kingdom of Heaven is right then and there for the taking. All you need to do is repent. Change the way you view life if you want access to the kingdom in the here and now. The rich man couldn't see or enter the kingdom because he was attached to his belongings. This "weakness" is one's own inability to detach yourself from the things of this world. "love not the world, neither the things that are in this world. For your life is hidden with Christ in God." We cling to false ideologies, false images, and it's the end of us. That's what you fail to understand.

A New International Version, that belonged to my Grandmother, which she used in her final years once she gave up on being a Catholic and got into some "modern" church here in New Zealand. we Muslims would certainly consider the Ebionites to be closest to the true teachings of Jesus. Like Muslims, they believed Jesus to be a man, the Messiah , send by God to the Jews to correct them from straying away from Judaic Law. However unlike Muslims, the Ebionites did not believe in the miraculous virgin birth of Jesus , without any father. If there were any accurate records of Jesus' teachings that existed today, Muslims would for sure agree with those scriptures. Unfortunately the New Testament scriptures today have been altered so much to fit Pauline Christianity ( ie a Trinity man- God) that they do not reflect the records of what the historical Jesus preached. I hope one day someone will discover the Gospel of Jesus!

Interesting how the fragments of "the Gospel of the Hebrews" on "reigning through seeking Rest" aligns with Romans 5:17; where Jesus (Grace & Truth [Wisdom]) is the One Who gives REST, so that seeking Truth (Wisdom), we will Find Him who IS both Truth (Wisdom) & Grace, whereby we Rest from our works of the law, finding Life which reigns "above the law" (Grace) & thereby (walking Grace out) Reign in earthly Life by heavenly / kingdom LIFE.

17:54 - A possible relevant nuance to this proposed dichotomy. Paul was against works *of the law* for justification (specific laws of Moses that marked one out as a Jew ie circumcision, dietary regulations, Sabbath, Holy day observances). Paul did not seem to be against *works* in general. Paul did seem to think that "works" did matter for your declared justification on judgement day and even for your maintained position within the community (the church), as evidenced by his writings urging people to behave in certain ways to be inheritors of "the Kingdom" and by writing that his gospel is about a day God will judge men based on their works (Romans 2:6). Much has been speculated as to whether James 2 is combatting Paul or directly contradicting Romans 3. What may be of interest though is that, whoever James interlocutors are, they seem to be advocating for *no works* , not "no works of the law" like Paul. James's arguments regard taking care of the needy, but do not regard circumcision and kosher necessity like one would expect if this was actually a rebuttal of Paul. Like Paul they both think that being declared right with God will be dependent on faith carried out in faithfulness to certain expected behavior.

Given that various early Christian authors claimed that there was a gospel in Hebrew, why should we believe that these gospels, used by Jewish Christians, were in Greek? It sounds counterintuitive.

If one were to put together a most historically accurate account of what Jesus actually taught, it seems entirely possible that it would match up far better with what disciples such as Philip, Thomas, Mary, and the Ebionites/Nazarenes wrote of in their gospels.

@1:20:00 not sure of when it started, nobody really is given that the expectations of moshiach are not found within the torah (thus why Karaites and other non-rabbinic Jews don't have a messianic construct), but the concept of being vegetarian in the messianic age has long been a part of jewish thought so that may be at least partly their basis. The traditional answer is that when Moshiach comes we are to return to how things were in Gan Eden (which was prior to the permission to eat meat). HaRav Kook takes it further and says in the third Beis haMikdash there will only be the mincha and grain offerings. Many Jewish vegetarian advocacy organizations today, particularly those with a religious basis, point to being vegetarian as a way of hastening the coming of Moshiach. Major caveat though, we have to be really careful of anachoronisms here as while the concept of a Messianic figure and restoration of the Davidic line certainly existed in the second temple period (thus why most male line descendents were kept in Persia until the fall of the Abbasid Caliphate) the concept of who Moshiach would be and his qualifications or for that matter how many there would be were really not crystalized fully until the talmudic age. All of that is to say as a former orthodox jew, the ebionites being vegetarian is the one part that makes the most sense.

I think these lost gospels that potentially represents a jewish perspective of Christ's life are so important. For me as a believer, one of my biggest problems is the resurrection stories of Christ. from a passion/witness sense they are virtually none existent imo, because gentile sources seem separated from the original Jewish church.. We have Acts saying Jesus appeared to 500 people at one time. We have Paul saying Jesus appeared to all his disciples at various times and Paul says Jesus appeared to him too. And yet we have nothing of these amazing events apart from second hand accounts, why? Should this not be the greatest story ever told? I certainly think so. And yet these lost gospels could have had this vital information but lost forever. History proves, that early gentile church fathers, would have destroyed such works if there was a hint that subject matter conflicted with their own Pauline beliefs. No doubt, a authentic gospel from a Jewish source that claimed Jesus was not God, or the holy spirit was female or that Christian believers must live by Jewish law would have been enough for these books to be destroyed. To think, what may have been lost, through dogma and arrogant men? Let's just hope, that if such gospels exist, even through a chance find like Egyptian death masks made from papyri and scrolls etc, they can still be found. God willing, they will be found if they exist.

Obviously something amazing happened with Jesus history and time are literally based on before and after his death. What more can we have than the apostles eye witness accounts it's not like someone could have snapped a photo.. there is more proof and evidence of Christ's life, death, and resurrection than any other event in human history. If we believe anything from the history books we would certainly be foolish not to believe the gospels that actually have many witnesses all with their unique separate accounts of the same events if everything was word for word identical it would seem copied and false but they do all tell the same story. These people did not suffer torture and death for a lie or a mixed up misunderstood story no they were faithful until death following the example of Messiah as part of his everlasting kingdom.

Although, his grouping of polygamist Christianity is not rooted in fundamentals Mormonism nor traces it's lineage to fundamentalist Latter Day Saint movements. ( Look him up on utube, I would be interested in you're take. Again, Peter Rambo) I am one Brighamite that would have no issue with a reunification of the Reorganized Church, I have no issue with women apostles, it's a tradition that goes back to Emma Hales rival Eliza R Snow. These non Mormon forensic writing style experts indicated there are a handful of authors which can write in different styles, Shakespeare, Elizabeth Barrett browning a few others.But they said, the book of Mormon has many different writing styles beyond what even these well known authors can mimic over a much longer sustainable period of prose. For example, Jacob has a different writing style than Joseph Smith or Isaiah whom he liberally quotes. This is from a non Mormon group of experts utilizing computer analysis. I do think James' "pro-works" discussion is more about "putting your money where your mouth is," ie. walking / working out what we profess to believe, than adherence to the law... because it is in the living (it out) that the testimony of our faith stands strong & as a beacon of Christ - which is where the Church has often stumbled. And in the "living it out," Always by the Grace of God, Not by a sense of "blind" obedience to the faith, the Truth of God's Word of Grace settles (as the unbreakable bones of Scripture) into our bones, empowering our walk unto longevity & strength, taking us from faith to faith, By Grace upon Grace. I do believe that what Jesus says in Matthew 5 (inc. 17-19) Not Only represents All the perfect holiness that "rests" on the believer's shoulders to bear, in representing Christ; But albeit the Redemption of the Cross is upon the whole world, the law stands True & Real for those who reject Grace - believer or unbeliever. For believers it is the "scourging" of the Father, because being under law ultimately will wear us out & near kill us with condemnation & after hitting our heads against that stone wall for long enough & when we finally come to the realisation that we're living under the law, Grace & Truth comes running to refresh & restore us unto sonship - even though we always were. For the unbeliever, it is undeniably alive & active in their lives Still to bring them to repentance - But Never to Stay under: the law Blinds us the Goodness & Mercy of God; & we fool ourselves if we think that we can attain to God's standard of holiness in our own strength; except for throwing our hands up in surrender, admitting our weakness so that His Strength to overcome, is Made Perfect IN our weakness; where HIS Perfect LIFE in us is Allowed to Live & operate IN & Through us. So that the law is indeed fulfilled in us, NOT by being mindful of the law, but of HIM, Who lived Perfectly, so He could be our Substitute for obedience; as well our Sacrificial Lamb in payment for our missing the Mark - a double Covering, which actually Transforms by the acknowledging of His Body & Blood. Where James 2:8-10 reaffirms what Christ (Matt. 22:36-40; Luke 37:36-37; Jn. 13:34) , Paul (Rom. 13:8-14; Gal. 5:14) & John (1John 2:10) testify: that LOVE is the fulfilment of the law; it is saying how impossible it is to live under the law, NOT championing that kind of life. One is entitled to one’s opinions, but one is NOT entitled to misrepresent the state of scholarly opinion to make it sound as if you are merely reporting a scholarly consensus - when in reality you aren’t. This video repeatedly makes claims about scholarly consensuses on certain issues on which there is no strong consensus. All of the matters he discusses are highly controversial and have been analyzed by many outstanding scholars over the past 20 years, all reaching different conclusions. I wonder whether this content creator has actually read any primary research done in the past 20 years, as opposed to merely repeating older, outdated secondary writings on these subjects. These Jewish gospels have been studied in great detail by many outstanding scholars of late, in doctoral dissertations, essays and full length published scholarly books. There is scarcely anything in this video that is reliable. The statement that “it is agreed” that G.Hebrews was originally in Greek is absolutely false, the issue being extremely controversial. The list of quotations from this gospel is highly controversial, as some scholars assign some of these quotations to the G.Ebionites or G.Nazarenes, which some of the early Church fathers evidently sometimes called G.Hebrews. The consensus of opinion that disciple Matthew did not author the original G.Hebrews does not exist. The consensus of opinion that Matthew and Levi were two different people does not exist. Furthermore, the claim that there was once another document today called Q - stated as if this were indisputable fact -- is hardly indisputable. “Q” arose in the 19th Century because leading scholars refused to consider any possibility that Luke used both Matthew and Mark, and it has since been demonstrated that there is no need at all for “Q” if Luke used both. Every decade fewer and fewer scholars believe in “Q” and the evidence against it continues to mount. It has further been noted by many recent scholars that G.Hebrews might well serve the function that “Q” was created to serve. To reiterate, it isn’t clear from this one video whether the content creator is deliberately trying to mislead his audience into adopting his positions on these issues by appealing to states of consensus where no consensus exist, or whether he simply has not read enough of the recent serious scholarly research on these issues. I strongly urge the audience to read as much as possible of the recent scholarly studies treating the Hebrew Gospels and “Q” for themselves. Much of it can be found on the Internet, and other publications can be ordered at your local library through Interlibrary Loan. Don’t even think about adopting any position on any of these issues until you have read 20-30 recent studies treating of them. It will not take you long to realize that these are all matters of great controversy and have not been settled by consensus as this content creator claims.

I like this guy steady even tone, and the fact that he does not talk down to people. But I don’t agree with him on the idea that there wasn’t some sort of centralized Christian authority. I agree that it was not necessarily as tightly organized as later institutions, but I do think that, the apostolic body was the critical unifying element. And I notes that one of the early church fathers, Irenaeus , at a very early date declares that when all of the apostles were dead, the heretics sprang up like mushrooms. This matches the writings of Clement, Ignatius, and Polycarp, who, writing even earlier, indicated the concern that they had that the church was disintegrating, because the apostles were no longer found, and they advocated that members of the church should adhere to the bishops with the idea that they were not as great as the apostles, but they were all that the church had at the time. So to me, this indicates that there was a centralizing authority, the apostles, and that they had all died, and the result was chaos and confusion. Looking further backward, the apostles did not seem to always be in agreement but they did have an internal structure and they process by which they could come to agreement and because they were far fewer of them then there were bishops. It was easier for them to come to that agreement. And they represented the primal and basic and fundamental authority in the church. And this is not to say that the church was absolutely unified in the days of the apostles. It is quite clear that during the time of the apostles, there were people who rejected the apostles and started their own religious movements. I am thinking of Diotrephes who John wrote about. But I do not think that this means that there were multiple legitimate Christianities. Only that the breakaway movements started quite early. But, unless Paul himself represents a major breakaway movement (and the might), it is reasonable to show that the apostles were the early unifying element and authority of the church.

If you believe that the Holy Spirit guides Christianity, wouldn’t that mean that the view of the one true church going back to the apostles with heretical offshoots here and there is essentially correct, retrospective as it may be? Yes, it’s the view of the group that won. Had the Gnostics won, they may very well have told the same story with themselves in the centre. But they didn’t win. I can see how atheists may question the story. But I can’t see how Christians can. If the Holy Spirit guides Christianity, then of course the true faith will eventually win out. It would have done so in the past and it would do so in the future. If on the other hand the Holy Spirit doesn’t guide Christianity, then Christians may as well stop right there and give up. In that case, it would be a cosmic coincidence if any form of Christianity today had anything whatsoever to do with Jesus‘ teachings. Christian beliefs today would just be a random function of how well any given ancient belief system was adapted to convert as many people as possible. Truth wouldn’t have been a requirement for that. The one thing that is immediately historically in accurate are the 17th century illustrations used by the presenter and retelling a story of the start of this religion. It may not be important. It is certainly a Blindspot, but the racial make up of those people during that time looked nothing like those paintings for the 18th century Europe, and definitely don’t look like the people who currently occupying that area today. I agree with you in part, but there was no Catholic Church to begin with and we now know that Peter wasn't the rock Jesus was talking about building his church upon. Rather, "James the Just" was the patriarch of the original church after Jesus' ascension proving the point #1 that Peter wasn't the rock in which his church would be built upon and #2 the apostles knew this. #3 Had Jesus said it was Peter, the apostles would have immediately went against Jesus' instructions by electing James. Not likely. #4 Had Jesus given that instruction the Apostles would have immediately elected Peter according to his instructions. Therefore we can conclude that Jesus never gave those instructions. @Robert McGee I again agree with you in part, with one exception, those who are grafted in are not part of the bloodline, the northern lost sheep of Israel are still part of the bloodline and don't need to be grafted in, but some Gentiles (non bloodline) are now part of the promise, equal inheritors. Those who are grafted in are clearly from a different (family) tree, different bloodline. In this way the promise would not lose effect but include other believers, those loyal to Jesus. This is easy to see, Jesus made a distinction between the lost sheep (part of the bloodline/family) and the Gentile nations (not of the bloodline) when he said to go to the land of the Gentiles to find the lost sheep who are scattered amongst the Gentiles, clearly they were not of the bloodline the Gentiles. Clearly some will be grafted into the house of Israel.

The portion of the law of the Mosaic law which would be considered heresy to fulfill would be the animal sacrifices because Jesus is now the perpetual sacrifice in place of those animals. It would also be heresy for anyone other than Jesus as the Melchizedek priesthood to fulfill the duties of the levitical priests since they were wiped out by the Romans in 70 CE with the destruction of the Temple. Even now, the Jews struggle to find the genuine levitical priesthood, the Cohanim, to fulfill the duties of the priests in the animal sacrifices without a Stone Temple.

Christians have to keep adhering to the ten commandments portion of the Mosaic law until the end. It is impossible for Christians or jews, for that matter, to adhere to the temple ordinances and statutes due to the fact that there is no longer a stone temple, neither is there a levitical priesthood. So how is that portion of the Mosaic law being fulfilled? Jesus himself is fulfilling that portion of the Mosaic law even now by providing his own body as the temple of God in which God dwells, by availing himself as the perpetual sacrifice for the sins of mankind, and by acting as Melchizedek priest. Therefore, the Mosaic law is still being fulfilled even now by faithful Christians who are obeying the ten commandment law, and by Jesus who is the temple, the sacrifice and place of animals, and the priesthood to facilitate that sacrifice. With every heartbeat, Jesus delivers the blood of the sacrifice to the holy of holies within his own body in which God dwells.
