The Louvre in Paris is planning to give Mona Lisa a room of her own. Mona Lisa is a 16th century painting by Leonardo da Vinci. Soon, it will be moved to an "underground chamber". Mona Lisa is one of the most famous works of art in the world. It receives ten million admirers every year. But due to heavy crowds, each visitor gets an average of 50 seconds to view Mona Lisa. This has caused frustration among visitors. Mona Lisa has more than 18,000 reviews online, 37.1% of which are negative. Now many have crowned Mona Lisa the world's most disappointing masterpiece. The Louvre says “moving Mona Lisa to a separate room could end the public's disappointment”. Question is, will the plan work? What problems does the proposal face? Palki Sharma tells you.

I visited the Louvre a number of years ago. Yes, I didn't have a lot of time to actually see it. However, I was not disappointed. I found it to be a fascinating piece of art. I do think a dedicated room for Da Vinci's work is a great idea. There are so many fantastic pices nearby that don't get the attention they deserve. 💙

I understand what you're trying to do with that statement but it doesn't take away the fact that the real reason for its fame is because of the painter. There have been many paintings that were stolen or attacked in the past. Why aren't they more famous than the Mona Lisa? Because anything with the name Davinci on it will gain historical fame first. Davinci achieved historical fame with Georgio Vasari. The average person doesn't know anything about art nor history in general. Most people cant even finish a book lol😂 so it's not surprising that it took this painting being stolen for people to do some research into. It created this exciting mythology around it that gave people enough curiosity to dive into it's past. I'm sure that other paintings failed to permanently ride the wave of their misfortune. Most other works of art also do not have someone on the level of a Vasari to back them up.

@@amoghars Wether you find Davinci crap or not is irrelevant. I'm a fan of both and I understand that their fame goes beyond their skills. Everytime someone praises Michelangelo, they're also helping Davinci rise in mythical fame because Davinci, Michelangelo and Raphael are part of the same umbrella, a symbolic representation of how an artist should and can behave created by Vasari. Davinci represents the aloof creator always jumping from one project to the other while still being gifted, always charming royal and powerful people with his good looks and knowledge. Michelangelo represents the antisocial character who doesn't like anyone apart from a few trusted colleagues that can help him finish major projects. Raphael represents the original Rockstar or the original Picasso, the ladies man who died too early. Sounds familiar? Yes, like the members of the 27 club. The Mona Lisa on the other hand showcased a revolution in 3d rendering because only few people like Davinci had access by the Pope to dead bodies which further improve medicine as well. Mona Lisa shouldn't be seen as some grand asthetic achievement but as the Canon of one of the greatest advancement in representing reality.

I'd put the Mona Lisa in a large room by itself, then have someone make a large prism that can bend the image 3-4 different directions, while also enlarging it, so that it could be viewed by more people at the same time.

I first saw the Mona Lisa in 1979. I was able to stand there unbothered & unhurried for as long as I wanted. I think I stood there for about 10 min. - Saw again later in the 80’s & it was about the same thing. BUT when I took my kids to see it around 2004 it was a nightmare! My point: You really had to view it by the 1980’s to enjoy the experience.

@@pixelatedreverie Best plan is to get in line way early before they open… then RUN straight to the Denon Wing (room 711) But if you just keep going you will hit the room automatically. Assuming they don’t get her moved to the basement before that. But the same tip applies. Go there FIRST! (Bypass everything else) Then backtrack after to see other important Italian paintings. I would suggest getting to The Hague to see The Girl with A Pearl Earring asap before the same nightmare begins. (If that painting interests you. It’s at the Mauritshuis Museum there). - Because the same “nightmare” happens at the Sistine Chapel, we ran/race walked straight to it to beat the crowds. (Still a 15 min walk thru the “maze”) It can get so intense there, you are packed in like sardines! (Found out the hard way on my first visit) Bonus tip: a small pair of binoculars is very helpful since the ceiling is 67 feet up! Best of luck. 😊

I saw it in the late 70’s as well. There were no crowds hurrying me away. But there was a magnificent sculpture nearby (Psyché et Eros) that grabbed my attention and took my breath away. The Mona Lisa simply could not compare.

In the 1970s, went to Paris 3 times from England during a one-year stay there... I visited the Louvre and saw the Mona Lisa. I feel blessed indeed to have had the opportunity!

I have been in the Louvre in front of the Mona Lisa alone. But I went Wednesday in the morning in November. It is a great piece of art that very few people understand the meaning of it. Mona Lisa is sort of the first selfie in art history. The previous art work was either rigid or they showed unnatural entities ( god, angels etc). Mona Lisa is the portrait of a common person with sort of a natural pose (her pseudo smile). Hence, her importance lies not on her beauty or craftsmanship but in the concept. Once you understand this, you can fully appreciate it's importance.

It was a matter of prestige, and, as far as I'm aware, there lay no selfir-like intent behind the creation of the Mona Lisa - apart from the fact that it's a half-body painting of a woman, which wasn't unique. Yes, you are missing the pose, the clothing, the expression. When you commission a portrait of yourself you put your best clothes, and particularly during that period, your expression will tend to be more dignified. This is a whole new concept. Compare it with the lady with an Ermine from Leonardo as well. Look at any Botticelli artwork and tell me that they do not look stiff.

Another issue, is that the Renaissance lasted two centuries, so maybe the painters that you are referring to were not contemporaneous of Leonardo but were influenced by him.

Because the story about the painting is sometimes more important than the painting itself. Let's talk about Tommaso Cavalieri. He was the model who posed for Miquelangelo for the most famous and copied image of Jesus. While the Catholic church is against homosexuality they tried to ignore the fact that Cavalieri was the lover of Miquelangelo. So now you have Christians all around the world with their homophobia carrying the image of a gay man in a cross

My Son got to see the Mona Lisa in 1997, when we were there for World Youth Day and He was mesmerized by Her. He also noticed everything around Her in the painting and couldn’t believe that people just wanted to see just Her and not the complete picture. There is so much more to this Great Lady than just Her beautiful face. He really enjoyed His experience with the Painting. P. S. My Son also thought that Leonardo DaVinci was a Genius! ❤

I saw the Mona Lisa & the Louve in 1970. I found my attention drawn to another DeVinci painting quite close to it. The Virgin of the Rocks just amazed me and no one was getting in my way. I glanced at the Mona Lisa and carefully studdiedall the other paintings in the room. I was very disappointed that the paintings I really wanted to see-Botticellis and Giottos- the early paintings were in rooms that were closed for renovation. Luckily back then there was no charge for students. I would suggest that art lovers consider the other fine works in the Louve.

I was taken to see the Mona Lisa back in 1963 when my Dad said we were going to see the most beautiful painting in the world. Then you could approach it to a distance of about 3 feet, no crowds, no time restriction. I was singularly unimpressed; there were other paintings far more exciting to see and far more beautiful. Best thing is put her in the cellar, lock the door and throw away the key.

On a student tour in the summer of 1969, a few of us stood next to the Mona Lisa for 20-30 minutes. No barriers, no glass. Just a few students and an elderly guard who ignored us. I remember being surprised that the painting was so small--while Whistler's Mother took up half a wall. I didn't realize until now that I was so fortunate to have had that experience. (The Mona Lisa at that time was a well-known, revered art treasure. Maybe its allure waned over the years, but I find it hard to believe it was ever obscure.)

Having been to the Louvre (and loving art & art history), the Mona Lisa is quite an interesting pice of art. But, the way it is displayed definitely detracts from the art surrounding it in the gallery as well as creates a cramped and crushing pit for patrons to navigate. When people enter the room their eyes glaze over. Not because of the painting but because they're hyped up and desperate to get close. I feel moving it to the basement is a good idea. As far as funding it, I don't have an opinion since it's not my money. But, the attraction to it and the resources to keep the painting and patrons safe would benefit from a new space dedicated to it's viewing. (And, the other works of art in the room are magnificent. I like that everyone is distracted from them so I could get up as close as I wanted and really look at them).

I loved seeing it in real life. But that was long ago so I guess it was less crowded. I stayed there as long as I liked. The big groups were all in a rush. I enjoyed the lull in between. I also took the time to see other famous art pieces because why go to a whole museum and focus on just one piece?

I have loved The Mona Lisa (which in France we call La Joconde) for years, always thought it was fascinating. I have seen it countless times, since I lived 18 years in Paris and visited the Louvres regularly, and not just to see her. I have to admit that for years it was a struggle to get a glimpse of her, there usually was a massive crowd in front of the painting, and you had to almost wrestle your way in front. It's a pity because on the opposite wall is the huge Noces de Cana by Veronese, which a remarkable painting, and not just for its size. The current arrangement, with 2 separate roped lines that allow you to move until you are just in front of the painting, is an improvement, but when there are too many people, you have museum personel asking you to move and make way for the next in line. In july 2020, while COVID was messing with everybody's life, the Louvres reopened, and without the foreign tourists, the crowds were down 75% and the museum felt almost empty ! I went with my son, who needed a wheelchair at the time, and my daughter in law, and the guides made us go right up front, before the ropes ! It was awesome, we were barely 1 meter away from the painting, and I felt I had never seen it that well before, and she was so gorgeous !

25 years ago when I saw the Mona Lisa I just could not understand all the fuss over the painting! The disappointment and realisation that I had just wasted my time and energy in rushing to the Louvre before the closing time. You see when you don't have anything to entice tourists to visit your country you have to resort to publicity stunts like this. A beautiful "ganga aarti" oil painting.....Awe inspiring! you have to redo every entrance in a historical monument, taking into account the unavoidable archeological findings. Everything you do in that area is highly costly because of reglementation , archaelogy, security concerns, high expertise needed.

Just back from Paris... The city is dirty, and pick pocketing is everywhere in local trains. There are 100 chances you get robbed in Paris. So don't take any value - no cash. No passport. No expensive jewelry. Don't sign any papers. Don't engage with street strangers. Make sure your phone and credit cards are safe and secured. No police will help getting your stolen money. They would make you wait long time just to take the report. That's it. Taking as a victim in Paris trains. Monalisa is over hype. Much more beautiful artwork in Louve.

People are such sheep. There is so much wonderful stuff to see in the Louvre. I spent 2 full days there once and could have spent more. Concentrating on one exhibit because that's what everybody else does is pathetic.
