There is no way around but count the fourths and group them in measures of 2counts, 3counts and 4counts for the whole song. There might be a recurring pattern of 3 4 2 4, but it varies all over the song whether they put in random 2counts, and the beginning of the chorus is totally different. These are the counts I figured out from the original, I hope it helps and wish a great performance of this very interesting song! Intro [0:00] 3 4 3 4 2 4 2 4 Verses 1 [0:14] 3 4 2 4 3 4 2 4 2 3 4 2 4 2 3 4 2 4 2 Chorus [1:36] (the last 3-count overlaps with the Interlude) 2 4 4 2 2 2 4 2 3 4 2 (3 Short Interlude [1:01] (the first 3-count overlaps with 'waters' of the Chorus) 3) 4 2 4 Verses 2 [1:07] 3 4 2 4 2 3 4 2 4 3 4 2 4 3 4 2 4 2 Chorus [1:36] 2 4 4 2 2 2 4 2 3 4 2 4 Instrumental Violin Echoing Banjo [1:55] 3 4 2 2 4 3 4 2 4 3 4 2 2 4 3 4 4 Verses 3 (no Banjo) [2:23] 3 4 2 4 2 3 4 2 4 2 Chorus Variation [2:38] (Watch out not to count too fast in the beginning!) 2 4 2 2 4 2 2 4 2 3 4 2 4 2 Chorus [2:57] 2 4 4 2 2 2 2 4 2 3 4 2 4 3 4 2 4 Outro [3:24] 3 4 2 4 3 4 2 4

You inspired me to look up the recording. Somehow I never heard this one before. I actually got to meet both Aoife O'Donovan and Sarah Jarosz back when Aoife was still in Crooked Still and Sarah was their opening act. They are both super classy and down to earth. They sound as good live as they do on their recordings, too. If you have not heard it already, Aoife did a recording with Yo-Yo Ma and Chris Thile called "Here and Heaven" that prominently features the fretless banjo.

15/4 time. One bar of three , one of four, one of two then one bar of six. Or easier to understand, one bar of three then three bars of four.
@futuredirected7 ай бұрын
@@tassieblues I didn’t even know that was possible with clawhammer/frailing. After almost 50 years of playing, I feel like a frailure. 🤣
@runrig977 ай бұрын
@@futuredirected nje One "bum dit-ty" is one beat, Most clawhammer is 2/2 even though it's written as 4/4 (easier to think of that way and generally looks the same even though that's not how you tap your foot). There's a tab for this on banjohangout, but it's not quite accurate as there are some places where they should leave some beats.

@君子ロベルト6 ай бұрын
It's much more fuzzy. If you think you found a pattern the song will mock you once again. You actually have to count through the whole song to catch all the variations, see my other comment yesterday. I was just so curious and spend the time to analyse the song...

Indeed, I mapped out the whole song counting, see my comment, and it confirms your theory.
@rescues_greyhounds7 ай бұрын
I know this is a random comment, but maybe find a recording on KZbin from “I’m with Her” and ask what the time signature is. I reached out to a group and found what key a piece of music was in. Hopefully the time signature isn’t something like 7/8, 3/2, 5/4, 11/8, or 5/8, or any of those signatures but with cut time involved. Sometimes I feel like the time signature doesn’t really matter. Just have fun with it. Also, my guess is that either the time signature or the tempo might change.
@君子ロベルト6 ай бұрын
At least for this song you actually need to count the whole song, because nothing stays the same, so many additional 2-counts and so on... see my other comment where I mapped out the whole song. I would like to know, if others agree with that counting.
