I wouldn't say other players are "overdoing" of course some players have more efficient techniques, but there are benefits using a bigger backswing... it's easier to generate power and brute force your shots brute forcing is useful when you can't hit cleanly (either because your technique isn't good enough, the surface has irregular bounces, or your opponent is hitting with too much power/spin)

Other players aren't overdoing it. Their strokes are designed for different things. Mannarino's compact swing and low string tension allows great trampolining effect, which for his lack of upper body strength allows him to use the opponents pace against them. But he doesn't have the heavy ball that other players do, plus he has to rely on more retrieving and playing the percentages. Other players end up finding more ridiculous angles than he does as well from the more loopy strokes.

I've been using low tension my poly strings for the past 3 years . I started at 35 lbs and now usually have my rackets strung at 32 lbs. As for control it's all about technique and timing. It did not take a long time to adjust. I use a "semi western grip" on my forehand and have a one handed backhand. It's far more comfortable than using 50 lbs of tension.

@oliverdesouza57412 жыл бұрын
What becomes apparent watching these pros close up is that even if they are described as flat hitters, they all play with huge amounts of spin. The main difference to the spin monsters like Nadal is simply the launch angle. The power these guys hit the ball, without spin, the ball would go 50 yards out even on a shot just over the net. This means if you're in 'no-mans-land' near the service line the ball is dipping very fast so extremely difficult to volley.

Sorry to say against but the racquet that you present at 1:40 that should be Adrian Mannarino's type of racquet it's a 2010 Babolat AeroPro Drive GT and not 2013 Babolat AeroPro Drive! 2010 have the V-Cortex and 2013 have the A-Cortex. He plays with a 2013 APD and not 2010 APD GT. I personally have a few 2013 APD's and is with A-Cortex. Before that (in 2007 and 2010) all Babolat APD's have V-Cortex and for the 2013 models Babolat have decide to rotate with 90 degrees the Cortex in the handle and from V-shape it's goes to A-shape! It's also just part of the sport. Kind of like complaining of bleeding from the nose or getting broken hands or whatever in say boxing. Injuries just come with sport, and it's frequent for athletes in multiple sports to compete somewhat injured or rather not physically 100%, from sports you wouldn't expect like table tennis to tennis to MMA and so on. There are qualities with stiff rackets at the end of the day that can be beneficial for various play styles. As Jonas said, and I'll add to it, elite players prioritise control over comfort, and what is control to one player isn't necessarily the same to another (for example, for Nadal spin is control and for Djokovic it's precision, and these ultimately, along with other things, determine what kind of setups suit). What I'm adding is that elite players will prioritize performance over comfort as well. There's also the fact that we are all built differently. Some people will struggle more with stiffer rackets than others when it comes to injury resistance.

Yeah... No. Maybe try 20 lbs and then 60 lbs to really know the difference. Because if you go step by step, you won't really notice a difference and your body will adjust to the tension after a few minutes / hours of play. I can guarante you that the ball won't be able to go to the same place if you don't change your technique or swing. Only because you're adjusting to it.
