Dearest Bonita, I'm going to assume the best and that the lump you've discovered turned out to be nothing serious! The world would be a far less beautiful and happy place without you on it. So please, please take care of yourself! We all want to see you every week for many more years to come! Hopefully, this new motor will be a blessing for you both and make your lives a whole lot easier. Of all the sailing channels I watch you guys seem to endure the most difficulties....but you always do it with a smile on your faces. You teach us how to make the best out of a bad and sometimes difficult situation. A very very important lesson indeed! Thanks for setting the example that all of us should strive for! God Bless Nandji and all who sail upon her!

I realise that what we're seeing here is not exactly happening over the last couple of days. But take it from someone who has spent too much of their life worrying about "what if"? Try not to do it guys. We all have just one life and seeing you two really enjoying your lives (I dont think anyone has a wonderful time ALL of the time) brings light to mine. I wont promise you that things like his wont ever happen again if you continue your sailing lives, but I can guarantee that you being at home will make no difference to the final outcomes of anyones lives. We're all moving down a one way street to the same destination and no one can change direction. So, just try to appreciate what you have while you have it and try not to worry about ANYTHING you cannot control or even influence. Just live, love and be happy in life. Do that and in my book you have made it!! All the best as always.

Just watched the end of the vid , yosh i would say the fuse didnt blow for 2 reasons no 1. Fuse blew and melted the plastic which possibly could have shorted together ( do a visual check) 2. There was a high resistance join where the blades of the fuse contact the fuse holder its called a hot join in the trade and the current it was drawing was under the fuse rating , this is the most likely scenario. Blade type fuses can be problematic in marine enviroments , and i would add checking all spring type fuse holders to your maintenance schedule ( every 6 months remove , clean possibly add conductive paste) . Happy to answer any electrical questions you guys have ... ( mechanical too , lots of experience but my trade is in electrical )
@FrothLyfeSailingNandji6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the insight Mitch, the fuse never blew, that was the problem. Reading the manual after for the charging unit and it was advised not to use blade fuses... I can safely say this was not my fault though as it was not installed by me! Question: If the current it was drawing was under the fuse rating, then the fuse is too large? correct? I generally clean and observe most electrical connections every month. Generally because there is some problem that occurs and I give everything the once over haha thanks mate
@mitchpender81136 жыл бұрын
@@FrothLyfeSailingNandji no im sure the fuse was tne correct size , fuses are to protect the cabling 1st and the component 2nd so the fuse wpuld have been sized to the cable and a little bit overthe maximum that the charger could deliver . For certain the issue was a hot joint try to replace the blade fuse with an enclosed glass fuse or a circuit breaker . You are doing great maintaining Nanji , what type of diesel did you purchase ? Please dont say volvo....
@faircompetition12036 жыл бұрын
What he said . The fuse did not blow because you were not over current . What you had was a bad connection in the fuse blades and that generated the heat . Same thing that causes fires in aluminum wiring . Not an expert but there may be a gel you can put on connections to reduce the corrosion by keeping out oxygen , it is used in aluminum wiring . Ask an expert for advice . Fire on a boat is my BIGGEST fear

Good on you Bonita, my Mum refused to have her lump checked out because she thought a neighbor who waited to get a mastectomy after her problem had spread had died because of the operation and not because of the disease. The cancer took my Mum three years later. If she had only gone for treatment, we would have had her for at least 25 more years...

Hi guys. Real valiant effort to get going in this vid, respect to you both for grinding out a result in less than ideal circumstances. Looking at the state of your connections on that battery, I'm surprised it's lasted this long. You really have to start getting to grips with wiring, about the diameter and condition of the stuff you're using. There's a handy, fortunately straightforward and thin, book called The 12 volt bible, written specifically for boats, that will explain a load of useful stuff to look out for. 12 volt stuff isn't like domestic leccy. You're sitting there with a number of batteries in the 100 amp range, possibly 400 amps in total. House wiring is max 13 amps, so the risk of fire, the size of wire and fittings, and, crucially, the condition of the wire are all super critical. Any wire with black corrosion on it is done for. The electrons flow down the outside of the strands, not through the shiny core you see when you cut it. Splits in insulation and poor end fixings in close proximity to other wires are a shock hazard because leccy energy is a force field, almost like hyper magnetism and the insulation contains that. Poor insulation = poor containment of the energy. I'm assuming you're right on top of the voltage settings for charging your particular battery type. If not, get reading. Trying not to sound like your dad here, but you might complain about slow progress on your boat in the middle of a 400 mile trip, but it's a huge load faster than you can row the same distance after the boat has burned down. Plan in advance and spend a week checking as much wiring as you can, you'll be glad you did. "Resistance is futile" is a saying that was made for boat wiring, and corrosion or small diameter add to the resistance at a rate you wouldn't believe possible. If in doubt about the wire size, choose the bigger one, seal the ends where the fittings crimp on with self amalgamating tape over plastic dip, and then heatshrink over that. Assume that at some point it might get wet when you need it most, and prepare for those circumstances. Sorry for lecturing, but I'd rather look at tosser than see all of your hard work go up in flames. Cheers.
