The traditions of the German Air Force date back to the First World War. Daredevil fighter pilots like the "Red Baron" Manfred von Richthofen achieved cult status and were celebrated as heroes. In the Second World War, the Luftwaffe was an indispensable instrument for carrying out the "Blitzkrieg". Civilian targets were also bombed mercilessly. The new Bundeswehr air force is now an integral part of NATO's defense structure and secures the West's air sovereignty.

Well that´s not really the true picture. German Airforce has already been fighting on many places. But that´s what had to be hidden a lot for some good reasons sometimes in the past. However GAF Combat Wing 1 already took some main roles (first in, last out etc.) for recce missions and to make gap in the enemy ground to air defence (what was key for all following allied forces for f.x. airstrikes) in for example UNPF, IFOR, SFOR, KFOR missions. I know cause I was part of that squadrone. So we got "our asses off" for loooong time already. And our fighting buddys from all the other allied nations incl. USAF, RAF, ..... will agree 100%. At the end of the Balkan war they (especially the USAF) statet they never want to attack without the GAF RECCE´s and ECR´s again ..... wherever it may be in the future. Then came Afghanistan and so on and so on....

After the kicking they got and deserved from the British and the mighty Spitfire and the courage and tenacity of the British people that wer vastly Outnumbered but still conquered Germany and the Skies Over Britain and Europe made the Luftwaffe look like a bunch of lost school boys totally defeated them out class them out engineered them and out thought them in every possible way imaginable 2 Hitler's horror and America was never attacked by Germany this is why you people are sympathetic towards them there is nothing to admire about Germany in World War 2 and to this day they were the last people to join in and help Ukraine Britain was the first to help as usual bravest and toughest people on the face of the earth second to no one
@devvytm

@@Bok2022st What in the world are you talking about? HAHAHAHAHAHA. Imagine pinning the victory of the allies on Britain who only survived because of its navy. HAHAHAHAHAHA. Fought against them in Europe and lost. Fought against them in Africa and almost lost if not for the assistance of others. Fought against them near Greece and lost. Sent troop to the USSR to assist allies and lost right up until Winter came and bailed both militaries out. Come back here when the UK can actually defend itself and/or its allies without relying 100% of the time on the fact that there is water to between them and the rest of Europe. I mean even in the Falklands war where they admittedly performed well they only survived because of the issues that were already going on in Argentina in addition to the fact that there was water between Argentina and the islands. I mean...even Napoleon would have conquered Britain if not for that water...what are you even thinking 😂😂😂😂😂 As for the thing with Ukraine, Germany has valid reasons for not going against Ukraine. Unlike Britain who has the Americans to bail them out if they fk up, Germany is screwed if Russia cuts all exports to them. Sure, the closer summer gets the less of an issue this becomes but you seem to not understand that Europe experiences winter and winter = cold and cold = dead people without adequate heating and that heating comes from electricity which is substantially being provided through the use of gas, Russian gas. So no. Additionally, Germany has no strategic reasons (other than supporting what America wants) to align with Ukraine. They have nothing to gain from it outside of politics but have everything to lose by opposing Russia. In any case, they have taken a bold step forward so far and only time will tell how things go. However, I bet you won't be laughing if Germany remilitarises as you seemingly want only to conquer Europe again 😂😂😂😂😂😂.

Man, the F-104 was an insane plane. It used the same engine as the SR-71, was designed like a needle. with what had to be the smallest wings ever put on a plane. No wonder so many German's died during training exercises. The F-104 still fly's today, yea, it helps launching small satellites into space by flying to 90,000Km, giving the rocket attached to it a great leap into space, turning the F-104 into a true StarFighter.

I sincerely hope that this long awaited return from a 30 year holiday for the German military, and their Air Force in particular, is not a short time experiment, and that Germany will take on a role within the NATO alliance that is in line with the economic and political power they wield on the world's stage. Despite all the mistakes and blunders of the American foreign policy, Western nations have always benefited from the security and support that the US military provided to Europe in the last 80 years. Although Russia is the most immediate security challenge, especially for the European Union, our cross Atlantic partnership and cooperation will have to grow to be able to play a role in keeping the international law based order in the face of a belligerent China. And although Pacific and East Asia seem like distant potential geographical points of conflict, the effects of those conflicts could have massive repercussion for the EU. Strategic blunders of multiple German administrations have positioned Germany in a terrible spot regarding the energy dependence on a dictatorial Putin's regime. Finally Germany has taken the view of "realpolitik" so famously followed by the first German chancellor Otto von Bismarck, and I hope this change will continue after Putin looses the war of aggression.

You are right. The Luftwaffe will get F-35s... we just don't know how long this will take. And as far as I understood it, they're also planning to purchase more Typhoons/Eurofighters. But it is going to take time. You simply cannot fix something in a short amount of time that has been broken for close to twenty, maybe even thirty years.

This is a German perspective on the German Air Force (Luftwaffe). I don't think WELT has the resources, desire or access to the Swedish Airforce. Germany is cultivating its martial culture once more, as is Japan. German citizens will become more interested in the military again, and the Luftwaffe is the most important branch of their armed forces. If nothing else, it's the nuclear-sharing that is critical for German security and the enforcement of NATO's Mutual Defense Clause (Article 5). If you're curious, the B-61 is the ordnance that can carry a nuclear warhead. Nuclear weapons are always a part of modern warfare calculus

@@andrewrobertson3894 Yes let´s put it that way. I watched a docu about our German Bundeswehr and one of the fighter Pilots said, that today it´s not like in the Top Gun movies anymore with all the dog fighting and cool stunts. Today it´s more like how fast can I go in there, drop a bomb and get out. So if we consider that, than you are completely fine with a Gen 4 fighter Jet, you just need one of the best bombs and Germany has the tech to back it up. Our bombs and missiles are extremely advanced, laser guided missiles with 2 systems to back one up if the other system fails. I don´t know if Russia has this kinda stuff but if not, then not even a Gen 5 Jet would be helpful.

It's not an Iron Cross, it's the cross of the Ordo domus Sanctae Mariae Theutonicorum Hierosolymitanorum, or Teutonic Knights, & goes back to the 12th century. In 1813 it was recommissioned as the symbol on the Prussian war flag, & has been in use in the German Army ever since. It has nothing to do with Nazism. The Nazis just loved their ancient mystical symbols, like runes, the solar wheel, the swastika, & o/c the mythical Teutonic Knights, etc..

Fair comment. It was the first defeat for the Luftwaffe, which allowed the UK to become a large aircraft carrier. Without the battle, the Americans would never have been able to join the European land war, and the Russians would have ended up in Brittany. I'm really glad that the Germans are part of the NATO alliance, but it was a little churlish to have omitted any mention of it. By the way the Me 262 looked good on paper, but the engines were junk and it was often shot down by Mustangs, which had a much better turning radius and were faster in a dive.
