Karikaru i totally get you mate. My Blackmagic Cinema Camera (2.5k resolution) back in the days produced the absolute best highligh roll-offs. So Film like and natural. My Sony a7iv doesn't perform as good. Then again, it recorded 12-bit and Davinci Resolve kicked ass already.

Man I stumbled across you on your FX30 video, which was just so good. I like many others are in the market, and comparing the S5ii (and S5iix more specifically) to the Sony FX and Alpha cameras. Sony cameras get me really excited because they are what I started on with the original A7S, the A7Sii and a couple a6xxx cameras. So I think there’s some nostalgia there for me. But back with the GH5 came out, I jumped ship to Lumix. Now I feel like I can’t live without their features, specifically shutter angle, waveforms, LUTs, the way they do HDMI output with screen info and not disabling the camera screen, and the look and colors that V-Log provide. I work with only one other person and sometimes solo, so video AF has become a feature I’m really interested in. Though I’m glad I’ve honed my MF skills up to this point. The main draw these days to Sony for me is the upgrade path. It’s so clear with the FX line now. I’m REALLY hoping with this new wave of cameras and customers, Panasonic will come out with competing cinema style cameras to carve out an upgrade path and lineup that can rival Sony’s. Think of, say, the BS1H and Canon C300 MKiii making sweet love and giving birth to a new line of Panasonic cine cams. Maybe reviving the VariCam name somehow. I think they will, and I also thing this collaboration/partnership with Leica and Sigma will be more important than people realize, in the long term.

I am a long time Sony 6300 user and would have loved to have the GH6! A dream. Stabe. Features. Lcd screen. Fan. FEATURES! Video options………. Wow! How much they packed in that camera! BUT………… I rely heavily on autofocus. And it’s weird. Since I filmed some stuff with a Canon 600d and manual lenses, before the “Sony era”. But… can’t pull focus and leave the camera on a gimbal or stuff like that. A pity that the GH6 is not there yet… Maybe the GH7? I would jump ships if they fix the autofocus. And better dynamic range (without any boost modes and silly stuff).

Sony‘s goal is their full-frame lineup. Every camera with aps-c sensor they released in recent years is plain crippled. Even the FX30. So nuch crippling. BUT, still less crippling than Canon. So, what else is out there? Fuji? They struggle or slowly catching up on the video side. Panasonic? M4/3 no can do as a single guy, in every situation. Full frame? Money… Olympus? … Pentax? :))) (Love their cameras, though). Missed someone?

Im thinking of selling my SONY A7IV (as that doesnt do a shutter-angle) and will replace it with a LUMIX S5iiX - I love the images of the Lumix cameras on video. SONY is great for photography but it's not as good as the Panasonic or SIGMA cameras that I have for video. Are you shooting in v-log and seeing the LUT on top of it in camera and then applying it in editing software afterwards or is there a way to burn it in with the camera? I love the footage and the B-roll you have shot in this video also and thank you for sharing the knowledge.

Thanks and yeah I shoot V-Log with a LUT over it in camera to help me expose properly and then add the grade back on in post. I know some ppl use the bake in LUT feature but I like having full control

Loved the intro. Your views on the S5ii are consistent with what I've heard, and seen, of the camera. After Sony announced the ZV-E1, I was taken aback by it''s offerings. You beautifully summed up the strengths of FX30 and in my opinion that is all one needs to look at before buying this gear. I am about to purchase my first camera and am confused between FX30 and Panasonic S5II. Until now I have been operating my friend's Sony A7m2 (yes the very old one) and I love every aspect of that camera and will hold a special place in my heart. Now, it is time for me to get my own gear, which should definitely be more up-to-date. Mann, I am really confused now. I know both are equally good, on one side the sensor on S5II is too amazing and on the other side, the autofocus on FX30 is impeccable. I have done tons of research and the more I do the more I get confused. Can you please help me pick one between FX30 and Panasonic S5II?

Ima be honest, if it were me, for serious work and I’d go for the S5II. I like the FX30 but it’s one of those cameras where if your a serious videographer or filmmaker, you know for a fact you’ll have to upgrade sooner. Whereas the S5II, you are basically covered in all areas

Great video! Right now, I am between this, the gh6, and the FX30. I want a good talking head camera to film my youtube videos. Additionally, I want to get into client work and start filming some sit-down interviews. Lastly, I want to be able to go out and film broll without a gimbal or extra gear. Awesome Video! I am deciding between the FX30 , the new ZV-E1 and the S5 II / x.. I shoot sports , SO speed and accuracy of AF would be great , but the low light capability of the Full frames is reassuring (I'll be shooting in dark gyms a lot) , though I am leaning towards the FX30 I must say .. but the S5 II seems awesome. I have a Z9 which is good for Video but I want a video centric camera that is also light and modifiable and gimble friendly . Subbed BTW..

I know you’re not asking me. But… If you have money and that is no issue. FULL FRAME! All the way. For best lowlight situations. And I am an APS-C user. Always was. I would buy the A7s iii / FX3 any day, or night… if it would justify the investment. Camera and expensive glass. Best autofocus / best lowlight / acceptable stabilization = Sony. Best stabilization in the industry / very good lowlight / good autofocus / tons of features = Panasonic.

Hey thanks! I filmed in V-Log at base ISO and I used Dehancer. My process is up on my review about it. Its cool when used lightly. I think most ppl are too heavy handed with the “film look”

That’s a tough one, i guess it depends on if you want full frame vs super35, image quality wise I don’t see one being better then the other.

Being full frame or aps-c doesn't matter as much to me, although having a lighter setup would be great. I'm torn between which one to go for because my main gig with the camera is shooting videos on the fly during trips, as well as for professional work. Even though Fuji's got that killer color science that I personally prefer and doesn't have the 60fps crop, having a solid IBIS would be a plus. Do you think the IBIS in the XH2s is much worse than in the Lumix? Thanks Lex

Man, I just love the love you put in your videos! Still torn apart, if I should wether buy the FX30 or S5ii or S5ii x or Fujifilm XH2(s) I have a Sony 6300. On paper, the FX30 seems like the camera I been waiting for to upgrade from the 6300, all these years. But it doesn’t inspire me to take it everywhere with me. I got the Fuji x-t30ii for my wife and I used it more than her. That camera inspired me to take photos the whole summer. And videos. But I want 10bit and 4k 60-120fps. Wanted that for so long. And also God stabilization. Aaaaaand good low light. Do I want too much?

I feel that! I was having a tough choice a while ago too. I'm confident in saying that all these cameras you mentioned are awesome; it's a matter of picking the cam you're inspired by, but I think more important limitations you're willing to live with on each system. It's funny because I felt inspired by the FX30, and I've been using it so much! I do miss having things like a viewfinder (coming from the Fuji XT4). And there's features on other cams like the S5ii that I wish were available on the FX30. I don't regret it though.

After shooting video on the GH5 for a few years I took in store financing to buy the Sony a7iv last november. I didnt really want to buy it but I was having a hard time to find cameras available to rent for photgraphy. Then in December it overheated a few times on a wedding shoot and I have been planning my exit from Sony ever since. I tried the S5ii that my friend had gotten on loan from Panasonic and stabilisation was awesome. Im really hoping the S1Hii will be having full frame 4K 120fps and that will be the one that helps me exit from Sony confidently without looking back...

@@hamroz1 Yes, that was done first. After some research I have put it on airplane mode, and if it still over heats during a shoot I open all the doors and swap the battery. Or just take out the GH5.

Hello. This video caught my attention. 💥 I am a Fujifilm user. I love this system. Until now I had the X-S20 which is the "baby" X-H2S. What it can do is more than enough and the image quality is seriously excellent. Unfortunately, there is only one thing that bothers me. And that is sealing against water and dust. For me, for my work, it is optimal to get X-H2S. Only the price is off for me. There's also the X-T5 with a large crop at 4K 24FPS. Which, on the other hand, is sad. The X-S20 has no crop at 24FPS. In addition, it has an open gate. Then I came across the S5II. I was really impressed with this machine. I will not lie. I also like the A7IV. But when I compare price and performance. Wow, the S5II is somewhere else entirely. I have questions for you. Fuji X-H2S or S5II? What do you really like more? If I record video intermittently and occasionally take a photo, how long will the battery last? Can I get by with one battery for half a day? Thanks a lot. They are both great but in my opinion , the S5ii has a better video image. I’d always suggest a backup battery with any camera.

I shoot on an xh2s and bought the original S5 for under 1000 euros. I can say that I much prefer the image of the Lumix as well as the superior video assist tools. If good AF isn’t mandatory, the original s5 is absolute steal.

I've been banging my head on walls trying to figure out wether I should get the Lumix or the Fuji X-H2S as an upgrade to my main camera, the X-T3. Changing systems can be a bit of a pain and budget wise I definitly want to stay on the Fuji side since I already have my lens kit. But it's videos like this one that make me closer to jumping to the Lumix side. As someone that already used the X-H2S would you say that the Lumix is the better camera? I love the Fujifilm XH2s so that’s a hard one. If I were in your shoes I’d go XH2S, because if your traveling, and doing photo & video, you want that speed, lighter weight and it also feels better in the hand to me. Overall it’s still the funnest and most inspiring camera I’ve ever used. They are both great imo, but the S5II AF does seem to be a little more reliable

Hey there guys.. @lexgraham I saw another reviewer who commented on the slow start up. He claimed that Panasonic told him it is slower on the first start up of the day but quicker on repeat startups. Apparently it saves battery when idle for a long time ie overnight. Have you noticed this to be true?

Love the Twilight Zone intro, mate. I have the xh2s and I bought the original S5 for £700… and I’m selling the Fuji. The Fuji, whilst on paper may have superior specs, I do feel like there’s more to the story. I feel like the original S5 has a very organic and filmic image. As for the xh2s, I feel like the image is a bit too over-sharpened and digital. I don’t use Af much for my video work, so it’s perfect for me.

The XH2s is still one of my favorite though , it’s just fun to use and I like the body but I agree, the OG S5 has the most organic image. It’s like the perfect amount of soft and sharp at the same time.

I LOVE my XH2s I have no negative comments about it. I actually used it today for an event. I like the S5II a lot too but the XH2s is both fun and a serious contender. It inspires me more. I’d say if your a xt3 user, get the XH2s, I think you’ll see what I mean. Especially having better autofocus.

I'm going to invest in my first full frame and I'm completely undecided between the Sony A7SIII and the Lumix S5IIX. Sony seems very reliable to me, but I have doubts mainly due to the lack of updates and also because it is an older camera. On the other hand, I have an amazing recent camera with a great price, but which raises questions about Rolling Shutter and 60 fps cropping. What would I recommend? I've been in this cruel doubt for months! 😅

Thanks, Lex, for your video. Agree 100%! You took the words out of my mouth. I wonder--don't these Sony users ever get sick of only being able to shoot in 16X9? Is all you shoot for is TV? Panasonic is the only hybrid camera company that provides what is truly needed for video shooters. Love waveforms, luminance spot meter---such fantastic exposure tools. Never worry by using Shutter angle. I loved the S5, and the AF of the S5II was just the cherry on top of the icing. The IQ is fantastic---and great, natural looking colors. I sold my XHs2 and A74. I think Sony people exaggerate the Sony AF. From a practical point of view the AF of the two cameras is very close. Practically speaking, there's no real difference. All that, but I still loving shooting MF.

I agree, I think the S5II AF is on par with Sony. Also once I was exposed to all the cinema/video centric tools Panasonic offered I would often miss it on my Fuji & Sony

in the night shots did you shoot at 640 or 4000

Maybe a mixture of both. I had a shot where I did 1600 at night and I found 4000 to actually be cleaner at night. So I went from F1.4 to F2.8 to stop down a little

The AF works good. Just took a day or two to learn what modes work best for me. It’s great in low light, way better in low light than fx30

Having done weddings, I say the S5II because it definitely won’t overheat & the low light is cleaner at higher ISO values

@@lexgraham Thanks man, I've been struggling to settle on which brand I want to go with and then which camera. I was using the gh6, switched to the fx30 and I didn't like it so I sold it (long story short, my wife talked me into switching to Sony bc that's what she uses and we are in business together lol). I'm newer to the game but also been in long enough to have to pick something and stay with it for a while. There's just so much out there, with more on the way. It's a bit overwhelming but I've been learning so much and am often surprised how much there actually is to learn. But I'm in a time crunch to pick something so I need to act fast. I liked using Panasonic, I had the GH5 and then the GH6 so I've never experienced anything else as a shooter, those 2 cameras are what I know, so as you can imagine I've never used anything with reliable autofocus which is something I feel like is important for me after 2 seasons of weddings. Panasonic has always had it's strengths but it definitely seems like they are back in the competition more so than ever, so I'm also thinking long term too. I'm not a brand snob, I think each brand has value and just appreciate the time we live in with these amazing cameras dropping all the time. Also, shooting a wedding in log pretty much terrifies me therefore I've never done it lol....any advice on how to overcome this and learn about log, trust me I try, but I don't retain what I'm trying to learn as well as I'd like If that makes sense. I think I'm tripping myself up though because every "tutorial" I watch or instructional video I watch each person takes a different approach. Every time I've shot on log I come back to try and make it look good in post I'm typically disappointed with myself and the results. I see such good color grading on KZbin, I don't understand how people do it.

@@anthonypensero7690 I hear you, LOG is one of those things you have to use and learn. Watching videos helps but going out, filming in log and coming back home to color correct is what’s really going to get you up to speed. This is why things like waveforms and Lut Preview while filming help 100%. Also white balancing correctly while filming. I’ll try to incorporate a section in a future video to help

Don’t do it. The XH2s has more dynamic range, better internal codecs and has a more pleasing noise pattern. If you must, trade with an equal like a s5iix or a FX3

Thanks so much for replying ,i value your opinion having used both.My reasoning is the upgrade pattern ,i also have a sony A73 and zve10 the sony A73 will eventually be traded for a A74 for hybrid work ,however my main concern is i dont want a downgrade interms of image quality and seeing that you have used both ,is the image quality of the xh2s better than the fx30 with minumum grading?putting the codecs aside?honestly to my eye your fx 30 videos look better to me of what i can see on your videos

Coming from my Fujifilm XT-4 that I've used for years... I've gotten my list of upgrades down to between the Lumix S5II or the Canon R6 mk II (I did consider the Sony FX30 but I prefer the IBIS on the Panasonic). I just wanted a hybrid camera that I can shoot some outdoor content with and capture cinematic b-roll with the occasional vlogging capabilities. How do you like the lenses for the S5 II?

The video clarity with that "silky" texture is very cinematic, it looks upto movie like stuff, definitely the best video for the price on a full frame sensor. The colors look so good, that Canon now has nothing going for it.

What is the difference between Auto-focus Continuous (AFC) and Auto-focus Single ( AFS)? .... My S5ii behaves in same way in both the modes? ... Also, in Human priority mode, it tracks human body, but if something e.g a shoulder or hand comes in the front, it will focus on the hand, even if the hand is not covering the face. This is one of the biggest drawback for keeping the face in focus.
