You should check out the other one done by Concordia Publishing House as well. Which is the one associated with the LCMS. It has more and higher quality notes imo, a reformed guy I know even put it up with the likes of the ESV and Reformation study Bibles.

I found one at a thrift shop for $3.00 best find ever. Great Biblical resource and I'm not Lutheran. (Pentecostal Holiness) You can't help but respect the vast notes of this Bible.

The one reviewed here is by ELCA, Liberal Lutherans. Concordia version is totally different and Confessional, Conservative.

I completely agree, ELCA is nearly a completely different "canned" Lutheran Religion, deliriously delighted in their brainwashed ignorance, (I know from personal experience), Liberal is a good descriptive word for them . . . Overall National board voted & accepted "abortion as alternative to multi-generational poverty" - their words, taught to seminary students & larger numbers of women pastors, recently . . . I don't know about you, but I don't think Jesus said, "The poor shall be killed." Lutheran Missouri Synod & Wisconsin Synod will have nothing to do with ELCA for well over 2 decades, at least, strong conservative base & both these synods are nearly identical to one another, both closed communion . . . primary difference is Wisconsin will not pray for or with others, they are that "closed" to only within their synod, whereas, Missouri goes out of their way to seek out or to honor requests for prayers for loved ones, hospitals, nursing homes, etc.

I have the paperback, it’s a nice product and high quality printing and single column text. I never use it exegetically because it feels like a heritage souvenir that has several biases that I never agree with. Nice product, sparse notes, no apocrypha, I should just give mine to a ELCA Lutheran.

Would be interested on your take on the LCMS study Bible. I think it would be quite revealing of the differences in Lutheranism.

I have this study bible. Like the ELCA, it's a bit of a hybrid. It highlights certain Lutheran distinctives, but also moves in a liberal Protestant direction.

Luther's Works talks about Genesis chapter 3 in Volume 1, beginning at page 141. I think you're right about Luther, but I'm just beginning reading this. Thanks for the video, very interesting. Martin Luther, Luther’s Works, Vol. 1: Lectures on Genesis: Chapters 1-5, ed. Jaroslav Jan Pelikan, Hilton C. Oswald, and Helmut T. Lehmann, vol. 1 (Saint Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1999), p. 141. This is Logos' version.

I suspect they put the glossy pages about Luther in that weird spot after Nahum because the construction of the book more or less required it. I’m going to assume this is a Smyth-sewn Bible. If it is, then they would have wanted to sew the section of glossy pages as its own signature in between two other signatures. Nahum may have been the only book near the middle of the OT or close to the beginning of the NT that ended on the last page of a signature. That would mean that the space in between Nahum and Habakkuk would have been one of the only places something actually could be inserted into the book block without randomly dropping the glossy pages into the middle of another book. This is just a guess from a very amateur bookbinder.

It's odd, if that's the case, that they wouldn't do it closer to the middle of the Bible though, no?

Its on a page number (around 1517) that represents year Luther posted the 95 theses. Which Lutherans mark as the start of the reformation.@@DiscipleDojo

I have fallen down a rabbit hole of both wanting to read the Bible more and to get a new study Bible that reflects my current standpoint with regards to faith. Previously I only owned very conservative NIV/CSB bibles growing up SBC. I attend an ELCA church and often find myself more moderate than the most liberal elements of the denomination. I do like the NRSV and none of the problems fundamentalists have with it concern me. My priority beyond a good evenhanded translation is honesty about diversity of opinion, which you pointed out this Lutheran Bible doesn’t have. To contrast, my last study Bible was the apologetics study Bible you also reviewed which tumbles off in the other direction. Are there other options I’m missing or videos of yours I’ve missed? Thanks for the videos - I’ve watched a ton and plan on checking out your Bible course and possibly recommending it for adult education at my church. Are there other bibles you could

Hello sir, I noticed that you're a Star Wars fan and obviously a martial artist. So, my friends from another church have told me that movies that have characters with powers such as Star Wars is witchcraft and sorcery and watching them invites demons into my life which leads to me being influenced and demonized, and that practicing martial arts such as Kung Fu originated from Eastern Religions which also invite demons and bring generational curses upon my family. May I ask what is your perspective on these? This topic worries me

Wow... that is very unfounded, the Bible is a text about reality frankly, and well, Star Wars is not real! Ergo you should have nothing to worry about! Its not witchcraft if it doesn't exist, why many fictional stories with magic and the like have very Christian themes, like the lord of the rings! As for martial arts, is the act praising false gods? If not, it is not sin. And as to demons, false religions have NO POWER, its not demonic it is just nothing! It is just as inviting to demons to play chess as it is to do kung fu!

The PROTESTANTS removed the apocryphal books The Society did include the Apocrypha in Bibles for use in continental Europe, where it was normal for Protestant as well as Catholic readers to have the texts of the Apocrypha. Prior to 1629, all English-language Bibles included the Old Testament, the Apocrypha, and the New Testament; examples include the "Matthew's Bible (1537), the Great Bible (1539), the Geneva Bible (1560), the Bishop's Bible (1568), and the King James Bible (1611)".[1] Robert Haldane criticised this policy.[2] The British and Foreign Bible Society had in fact dropped the Apocrypha from its bibles published in English in 1804. This decision broke with the tradition of Myles Coverdale, of consolidating the Apocrypha between the two Testaments.[3] They reasoned that by not printing the secondary material of Apocrypha within the Bible, the scriptures would prove to be less costly to produce.[4][5] Haldane and William Thorpe began a general campaign in 1821, against all Bibles with the Apocrypha and their printing with funds raised from British sources. The Society was divided over the issue, but the majority view favoured the existing policy of case-by-case inclusion. In Spring 1826 an attempt to reach a compromise with Haldane's view broke down. As a result, the major Scottish branches in Edinburgh and Glasgow left the Society. Most Scottish branches followed, and a few in England.[6] Nevertheless, to this date, scripture readings from the Apocrypha are included in the lectionaries of the Lutheran Churches and the Anglican Churches.[7] In the present-day, "English Bibles with the Apocrypha are becoming more popular again", usually being printed as intertestamental books.[1] The Revised Common Lectionary, in use by most mainline Protestants including Methodists and Moravians, lists readings from the Apocrypha in the liturgical calendar, although alternate Old Testament scripture lessons are provided.[8]

Another view of the plural In genesis, which is related to one of the views you stated but significantly different is the “god is speaking to other gods not created divine beings” view. This view is supported by the other polytheistic verses in the Old Testament.

That view would fall outside of all forms of Christian orthodoxy, though, along with the view that God is talking to aliens about panspermia, etc.

As a Lutheran theologian, I can attest that this is the single worst study bible ever produced with the word "Lutheran" on it. Though, I would expect nothing less from the ELCA and Fortress Press. Concordia Publishing is the one to buy if anyone is looking for a truly exceptional "Lutheran" study bible.
