Only 255 units of this sports luxury sedan were ever built, and it remains a shining example of the prowess of South African engineering. It also gave birth to the 745 racecar, which became a highlight of the South African race scene, in the hands of the legendary Tony Viana.
Born in the '80s, a particularly difficult period in South Africa's history, the 745i also represents a time when BMW worked closely with South African political activists to keep the Rosslyn plant operational and to contribute positively to South Africa's history.

I remember this 745i and the Aston Martin Lagonda was the same price back then. R74 000 if memory serves. They were the most expensive cars you could buy.

Great vid, great highlights to a period of "can do" that seemed to stretch from post-WW2 all the way up to the 90's... Just check that music volume during speech, it drones out the voice a lot of the time.

the M1 was not really amazing even for 80s standards... it's cool how they managed to get that engine into the 7 series and did not tell HQ in Munich but it did not make it a beast, just made it worse because of its excessive weight.

excessive weight... No. The other versions of this car basically had the SOHC version of this motor with 70+ hp less

Hello Jacob, thank you very much for the great video, I have great respect for your knowledge and the commitment you're showing! 👍 I've been interested in rare BMWs for several years and I've been able to refurbish and drive many of them, including a "M745i ZA" (VIN ZBAFJ280200620190). I bought the car in South Africa a few years ago, had it brought to Germany and have been working on it ever since. It is now in good condition again and I enjoy driving it a lot. 😁
