Awesome update. Glad you’re starting to appreciate it for what it is. I think a third pedal would totally transform the car, but that’s a ton of work for a car that’s not even your “for-awhile car” no less a forever car. You got it running again. Ready for the next owner to take it on and make it theirs. So easy to get wrapped up in project creep. Let it go as a running and driving example that just needs some finishing touches. Been working on my neighbors 850i and it’s arguably the worst example in the US. It just needs everything - runs like garbage and drives even worse. But man, it is one sexy-ass machine to look at.

You nailed it!! I dont plan to keep, so I couldn’t put forth the effort and money to take it to the next level as a manual, or further mods. I revived it, did my modding, and Im satisfied and ready to move on. Cant mod cars for the next owners id be broke! HAHAHA definitely agree they are great ti look at

I still think this would be perfect with a modern automatic. The 8HPxx would be perfect, especially with paddles on the steering wheel. Would need to have some custom made to not feel out of place in the E31 interior.

Hey you 2 that's what I exactly wanted to ask him to do. And it really is possible! There is turbolamik and cantcu(look them up in youtube) as controller solutions and then there is domiworks and pmc and others doing adapterplates. I've got a swap kit for a m60 to8hp70 for my e34 540ia Touring sitting on the shelf! But for e31 guys...v12 is even doable!

I have dreamed of a simple 840 for two decades plus some. Seems like every time I had the finances for it some emergency came up. Daycare, wife laid off, kitchen remodel, family car, college paying cash for two kids so they don't have loans, cancer. retirement. I missed all my chances the last 27 years. Beat cancer and I'm still looking!

While the m60b44 stroker mod is dope since it gives it a beefier torque curve, I think you're missing out on some of the actual more desirable mods that DO improve the driving experience with it. The big one is a better diff. 2.91 is not substantial at all, for any bmw, tbh. It needs a 3.15 at the very least, but if you're not going to manual swap it, then at least put a 3.64 and discover what happens. Dinan transmission tune + 3.64 diff will make youre 840 pull a lot harder than the m60b44 engine would have. And for the love of god, give the quick arms a shot and see what a difference it can make to this wonderful chassis. The 8 series is an engineering marvel, I'm afraid you're missing the point still.

I believe everything you’re saying!! However I just am not sure I have the desire to understand the point. I dont want to spend further time or money on the car, I have other cars that are more my style that need attention. Anything i do to this car in future id be doing for a next owner rather than me

Bro my e38 01 sporty shorty has a quicker 0 to 60 time which is ashame because I was looking into this "cheat code" but your zero to 60 time made me laugh in disappointment. You definitely should take what OP had to say because the car really does need a dif mod. It's not even that much cost just find a used sport diff from a e39 sport 540 or 740 sport. Cost you roughly 300 to 800 bucks used. 1500 on the high end or m5 lsd swap. Would definitely unlock the full potential of the current e31 build. I'll even buy it for you or donate one I have 2 3.14 diffs. Please don't end it here car has more room to grow

I always tell people. Manual e31s are HORRID lol. Same for e38s, e53s, etc. They're too big and comfortable. Unsure why people think a manual makes everything better. That is far from the truth. With the effort and money someone would take to manual swap it. You can put an 8hp50 for not much more, and get an actual cool car to drive, that's worth more money.

I think that manuals just provide a more engaging driving experience, the level of comfort isn’t really part of it. Also I liked the manual e53 and e83s I’ve driven

@@m3nameisjosh464 yeah everyone hyped them up to me for YEARS so I went and drove em all in manuals. E38 740i, and IL 750il. One 740i was supercharged, e53 3.0 and 4.4, e31 840 manual. Haven't driven the v12 manual. But I can honestly say nothing is more over-rated. Only time I enjoyed manuals in these cars were the ls Swapped e38 and e53s I've driven. And even still the autos were better. It's engaging, because you're doing the shifting. But it's not engaging in a fun way lol. I did backroads in the supercharged 740i msport, even still, not all that.

Manual e31s are the way to go, just need a better diff. Handling mods do wonders for these cars which I think you should check out if you ride a manual e31 ever again.

In need of Build guidance and question when you say M60 b44 can you break that down and explain to me the mashup of parts because I'm getting a manual E39 540 and I'm definitely going to keep it and I still currently have an automatic 540 off to the side that's an E34 so that's the M60 b40 how would I mash those parts together and make the best possible engine technically just convince me to tear both of them apart because I still have a 525 5-speed that runs and drives or could I possibly take the parts from the E39 and easily make the E34 better I don't know what direction to go Just need some guidance from someone that knows their stuff

It could be a lot worse..... You could own a 645Ci. E31's are worth more money in Europe, LHD so it will go to Germany maybe as an unrusty turn key 840Ci with a sorted engine.
