Hello, I am a Jordanian and I was thoroughly shocked to see an Arabic lettering 80s classic mac keyboard, I can't even imagine how rare that is.
@oali2478
@oali2478 5 жыл бұрын
Does the mac have support for Arabic TYPING, because very, very few computers from that time would have had Arabic language support because Arabic letters are mostly connected together an have different forms depending on whether they are in the begginning, middle, or end.
@65scribe
@65scribe 5 жыл бұрын
The system disks it came with were not Arabic, but I know Apple added support for international languages very early. Chances are the original owner was using Arabic software on this computer. In those days, software had a copy of the operating system on the same disk, and it would be the Arabic language version. Great to hear from someone who knows the language! I'm not sure how rare they are, because I've never seen another. It's a rare find in Canada, but maybe there are many in the Middle East. Thank you for your comment.

I have seen a video where a 512k mac whas upgradet with a super fancy board on top of the motherboard, sandwiched together, and that board enabled the use of MFM hard drives! Its the only 512k i had ever seen with a build in hard drive! Crazy how many good mods there are for those old macs!

I have used HD floppies for DD images very often. The secret is to completely demagnetize the disks. I use an active tapehead demagnetizer for that, though bulk tape erasers should do the job just as well.

Why doesn't anyone talk about a Mac 512-E (Enhanced)? This was the first Mac I purchased in Oct 1986. The only difference it had from the 5612 version was that it had a single 800K Double-Sided disk reader. I was introduced to the Mac by a fellow naval officer who had a Mac 512. He said I could "play" with his computer after I told him I had no desire to learn basic computer language and I did not want to spend hours or days of frustrating line-by-line coping from computer magazines. He explained to me that the Mac only required that I insert a system disc and turn the machine on. Another disc brought up the MacWrite program and I was able to intuitively write letters and do reports for my Master's level courses. None of that "C/load" stuff for me. It was wonderful and the ability to correct my poor typing with the mouse was a dream come true. Most people thought that the Mac was too expensive compared to the IBM clones. However, they did not realize that the price shown was for the CPU alone. You had to buy a monitor, video card, sound card, keyboard and mouse separately. If you changed any of these components you might have to but a new card. Purchasing a printer for the Mac was easy because there was only one comparable DOT Matrix printer. The printer simply plugged into the back of the CPU and it was ready to print what you saw on the screen. The printer card was included in the computer price and was already installed. For the PC a printer must be chosen from many along wit a separate purchase of the appropriate printer card that needed to be installed in the CPU. If it was comparable with your CPU you still had to adjust "dip switches" on the back of the computer to allow the printer to function. After purchasing all of this additional equipment for a handsome price, the total cost met or exceeded the cost of the Mac. After you got it home you had to install programs you purchased or type the program from another source from a list of several hundred computer commands that had to be typed line for line, without error or typo in hopes that it would work as advertised. If not, you had to start over. Mac programs were included enough programs to get started along with the purchase.

I know about the 512e but did not mention it for some reason. In fact, I kind of glossed over machines that followed the 512. But great personal story on your first experience with the graphical OS and the advantages you saw in the Mac at the time. Thanks!

Not sure about 400k floppies, but I’ve been using HFV Explorer on Windows 10 to write 800k and 1.44 mb floppies for my Macintosh II and PowerBook. It feels a bit hacky at times, but it’s easier than going back and forth between different Macintosh computers.

You can transfer files (img dmg files whatever you need to create the floppies on your 8600) via Ethernet using a web server on the windows/macosx/Linux side pc and downloading via browser on macos 8.6/9; there are lots light web servers for any mother os out there

That is the Keyspan Model UPCI-2. That card came with the 8600 when I bought it from the original owners. I would think it would need software installed to work in OS9.

I use my iBook G4 running MacOS 9.2.2 in classic mode and serving an AFP share, a Quadra 610 running System 7.5.2 with an AAUI adapter and running the AppleTalk to LocalTalk bridge software, then a LocalTalk serial cable links the Quadra to my Macintosh SE running System 6.0.8. it's involved but requires no sneakernet outside of the initial work of getting Network Software 1.4.5 and AppleShare for Workstations 3.5 onto the Mac SE, and LocalTalk Bridge v2.1 on the Quadra 610. evidently the mac68k forums have been working on a DIY direct LocalTalk to ethernet bridge for a while now but I already had everything on hand.

I've just gotten myself a Powerbook 540c, and haven't been able to find a way to make floppies from a PC, I actually killed my USB floppy drive somehow trying to write an image to a disk. I also have a Powerbook 3400c which has built-in Ethernet and that works fine to FTP stuff onto it from a PC but unfortunately I only have the CD drive for it, not the swappable floppy so I'm screwed too. I will try to build myself a serial cable to connect the 2 and copy images across via AppleTalk then write them on the 540c itself... It currently has System 7.1.1 but not in my language, would like to reinstall 7.6 but I need to make the 16 floppies first...
