In reality, both are right! This is one of those grey-area arguments. The truth is, you do what it takes to get out of the ghetto and get a better life. But then, you leave that old lifestyle alone, turn it into a clean business and give back.
@torrebrannon81808 жыл бұрын
Powerful scene illustrating the interconnection between Revolution & Black Capitalist values. Ironically, as would be the case 20 years later in Boyz in the Hood, the good guy (revolutionary in this case) did not emerge as the hero, in real life. After the Mack, Goldie was the hero on the street, as Mack of the Year contests sprang up all over America. This was also the case after the release (1968) of Iceberg Slim's, Pimp, the Story of My Life. Iceberg. in the writing of his classic treatest, issued a warning to all young brothers to stay out of the game. Yet, hundreds missed his message, and dove right into the Pimp life. Max Julian, in real life, is s revolutionary, Huey Newton and he were close friends. He hoped through the telling of this story, to keep people away from the game, after all, he leaves town on a bus, busted, broke, no more hoes, bad relations with his only brother, who was the one he turned to to elicit revenge on the crooked cops who murdered his mother!
@denmark5558 жыл бұрын
+Torre Brannon Everything you wrote is correct. I was saying the other day, how most people miss the point of these movies. No one ever references the last scenes in the Mack, when he turned away from that lifestyle, inspired by the love and lose of his mother. Most movies made by black writers and directors, try to give lessons. Yet most viewers just grab onto the negative aspects. Menace to Society a perfect example, the two main scenes in that flick features Charles S. Dutton, discussing "the hunt" of black men. And the ending scene, where Cane is killed, and laments how he messed up by not listening sooner.

Torre Brannon - yes indeed as was the case in most 60s and 70s exploitation works...books, movies and documentaries. Superfly comes to mind. When capitalistic agendas are put in place to oppress a people, the argument continues today. Revitalized by 45's cry to "make America great again." You hit the nail on it's head but most blacks believes it some how shows intelligent to remain silent to something that has existed for hundreds of years. But the roar of the lion, Judah is loud and clear. Good message Torre Brannon.

I disagree that they are both right. This theatrical dialogue is an excellent illustration of the devices used to divide dark brown Africa Ethnic people all over the world. You want to see poor dark brown skinned people, visit the Continent (now called) of Africa. Walk through the residential areas after day light from the sun has gone; it's pitch black outdoors and try not to trip over little girls and boys squatted down outside their homes, emptying their bladders and bowels of waste before going to sleep inside maybe on a mattress on the floor, or a straw woven mat. Answer this question that so many living poor there answer in acts every day: what are you willing to do to bathe yourself, have clean water to cook with, drink, and clean your self after relieving yourself? There they too are forced to live "REALLY POOR" because of the same devisiveness there keeps the people divided and conquered. It looks like ambition, but it's real proper name is "GREED!"
@Lenner347 жыл бұрын
It's all love brother but I think you're describing remote African rural areas. There's cities with pretty cool shit and what not( Lagos, Nairobi etc) Both ends of the spectrum in Africa are black-both the billionaires and slum dwellers. It is racial, but also a rich-poor divide. In your part of the world the legacies of slavery, disenfranchisement, segregation and social injustice ensure it also coincide with skin color. All the same brothers from the states are on point. Never was woke till I did college over there.

the folks that made this film were aware of what was happening with these films and they tried as hard as possible to work in some positive messages to go along with the negative stuff they needed to get the film made. Curtis Mayfield's reasons for doing the soundtrack to Superfly had the same kind of motivation.. he said the movie was going to have a such a destructive effect on the black community that he felt compelled to put some music to it with deeper positive meaning.
