As an Asian guy born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, this era of music i didn't grow up under. But...... Going to a school that was 80% black, you make friends. You get invited to parties. You get exposed to black music. Young kids would be outside dancing to rap and hip hop but the older generation would be inside playing soul, blues, funk, and jazz. I gravitated more to the older generations music, i don't know why but because of people like Willie Hutch, Curtis Mayfield and Bobby Womack, i became a bass and rhythm guitar player. I love every minute of it.
