All of kendrick’s music videos are exquisitely directed, i think mostly from the same director. Kendrick is a top class artist. He actually is the first rapper to receive a pulitzer prize for his music. Truly one of a kind. His albums are so detailed its awe inspiring.

“It’s like poetry” to pimp a butterfly, the album the song is from, is actually an album created from a poem he wrote where either every line or stanza of the poem was captured with a song on the album. So it is poetry.

As a Black man living in America, I have had many conversations with my White brothers and sisters about me and my community's many struggles. And even though many of them show empathy from the stories I've told them and the problems I see, they rarely seem to understand. But how could they? Kendrick is a phenomenon that has the ability to make people understand... even if they don't want to. Watching the "2 Old Dudes'" reactions to Kendrick's delivered message and seeing that they actually empathize AND understand what us Black Americans go thru brings tears to my eyes. It's very simple what we want. We just want people to listen and understand, and Kendrick Lamar makes that happen time and time again. He's a voice that speaks for all of us in a language very few can speak, but a language that all of us understand; both Black, White, and everything in between.

My favorite rap artist by far. Started listening in college with “Money Trees” and thought he was just another rapper that was good during a party. I was very wrong. Listening to his three big albums GKMC, Pimp a Butterfly, and DAMN. in their entirety is really an experience that’s great for multiple listens. Pimp really spoke to me it was released a few months after Michael Brown was killed in Ferguson and as a white guy it was interesting because the album was clearly written for black people all the messages and themes, yet I never felt excluded. Like I fully understood what he was going for and could appreciate the art even from an outside perspective. And then simply musically Pimps samples were just out of this world and I loved the musical themes of the album. Great pick you guys!

I subscribed to this channel based on this insightful reaction which is my first time viewing. What I've learned being over 35 is the word "old" should be synonymous with the word "wise". The ability to accept art and recognize the realness in it and have the ability to balance what it is and what it is not, earns Two Old Dudes a high position in life and morality in my personal opinion. Im a black man that lived in Compton when Kendrick came up and I welcome all perspectives when it comes to respecting human art...period.

Hey guys, just wanted to leave a comment and say I appreciate your perspective here. Obviously my generation loves Kendrick, but I realize your generation probably doesn’t know who he is or would normally be willing to listen. I appreciate the fact that you both approached this with an open mind and listened from an artistic context and wanted to understand the video/song and lyrics. My Dad always used to listen to the music I listened to with me sometimes. As a musician, whatever it was we listened to, he would always say “that’s good shit…” if he liked it or found it interesting. I always loved that he would say that. I say all of that to say that you guys seem decent and open to good music, no matter the context/genre. Keep doing this stuff and these videos. Set an example for other folks that a broad perspective is healthy.

I’ll agree with what everyone else is saying. But I think it’s cool you latched onto the jazz element. Lots of great modern jazz musicians played on this record, including an LA based collective called the west coast get down. And, the guy who produced and wrote most of the music, is named Terrace Martin. He’s an incredible solo artist, and has also been playing sax in Herbie Hancock’s band for the last several years. Check out his music

I’m not sure y’all are in a position to judge what ‘real rap’ is, but I’m glad you liked it nonetheless. Rap lyrics can be about things other than black suffering and still be great songs.

You guys gotta react to his “god is gangster” music video from the same album featuring 2 songs in the video, one of them including a song called “U”. It’s incredible. The emotion, the rawness, instrumentation, visuals, everything. Loved the reaction and how open minded you guys are in receiving music you are not accustomed to listening to. Keep it up 👍

The problem is... that song requires context from album to fully understand and grasp and appreciate its concept

I guarantee that To Pimp A Butterfly will go down as possibly the best rap album of all time. Just give it some time. It’s 100% worth listening to it as a whole.
