Made reservations to go camping at Calico for the first time in a few years next weekend on Wednesday. Thursday evening, they changed the predictions from partly cloudy to possible rain and snow showers. Maybe just the dog and me. Testing to see if my solar panel installation mods are working. My wife thought doing it in the driveway was cheaper, but it's the beginning of wildflower season in the Mojave. I'm also going to be collecting gravel, sand and dirt and dust from some of the locales, greens and yellows from around Rainbow Basin. Usually get a lot of dust out of the nooks and crannies of the truck. Maybe I'll end up with muddy clay and wet dirt. Can always let it dry and grind it down. I got a load of decomposed granite a while back and that sifts down into various sizes and has a bit of more of a pinkish tinge than most DG. A scoop of that is a little more than most of us need for modeling.

This is something very important to take to heart because I feel a lot of people, including myself, tend to think once something is created it's set in stone because a lot of work into track layout, rock work, ground cover, and buildings went into a spot and it feels wrong to tear it up. But really there shouldn't be too much to fear as the opportunity can open up some great moments to improve a layout. Especially when it comes to freelance model railroads that don't have a real life prototype to copy from.

Mario and Luigi 😂 also, I use sculptamold for my outdoor Halloween haunt decorations. I made moulds of my favorite gothic victorian detailed designs and used the sculptamold to make a bunch of copies or even new sculpts. I like it because it's not perfect obviously, so it gives it an actual old feeling.

The first time I tried to do a rock mold they failed. They broke coming out of the mold no matter how much soft soap I use. But when I did it with Sculpt-a-mold I got much better result, and now I have rock faces leading into my Christmas train set.

I have stuffed extra sculptamold into woodland scenics rock molds. It comes out with a decomposing limestone or spilled and hardened cement sort of effect. It will hold the mold texture decently.

I Always enjoy your videos! Your timing is impeccable! I started this vid at the same time I started a project to enable me to run my wood lathe in reverse for sanding operations. I finished at the same time the vid ended! Now I’m scared to turn it on because I paid too much attention to what you were doing, and not enough to my work! Thanks for including the drawing of the head frame! I’ve not had much luck finding those on the web, and I’m not much into buying pricey books for one or two drawings! I love building mining structures, so any drawings you show are welcomed! Now, let’s plug this thing in! (If ya see smoke, call the chimney savers!)

Always loving your work and dedication to the atmosphere of your layout and details. Just wondering if you have looked at adding mirrors to maybe some canyons or behind hills to add the appearance of depth from the reflected images. Seen this done years ago on some layouts and it was always interesting to see done.

I’ve used Sculptamold successfully in smaller rock molds. Doesn’t capture detail quite as well as plaster does, but in certain applications it works.

curious.. I've been watching a lot of your building structures videos, and noticed pretty much every one has a smokestack for cooking / heating stoves.. but none of them has a stack of wood anywhere around them.. i know- stupid thing to notice, just wondering if a small town sized sawmill was in the future, and since buildings are wood.. water tower or fire brigade buiding? one of my favorite movies is 'Support Your Local Sheriff" where they use horse drawn pump to hose off people fighting in the street.. might be a cool safety addition,, lol
