Early on growing orchids I listened to so called experts and watched to many Utube videos. Most were using way to much seaweed. I found out the hard way stopping root production and even killing roots. Cattleya's do not like much seaweed, their roots are far to sensitive. I threw away two bottles of seaweed because I did not refrigerate. Live and learn. Nicely done my Orchid Master.

HI Bob 😍💐 ooohhhh, Seaweed and our good intentions are not a good combination! Even blooms will look terrible, growths deformations etc, if seaweed is abused. We mean well and think that we can add a little more, do it more often etc. but less is definitely more when it comes to orchids! I am glad that you found this video and from here on in, the seaweed will do the trick for your orchids and I can't wait for the feedback in the future 👍🏼 thank you so much for watching and for your enthusiasm here! Hi Nina, I have been using sea weed less then a year now. I can’t say my orchids are doing beter with instead of without sea weed. I don’t feel comfortable now to do without. I use small amounts about 30-40 ppm every time I fertilize my orchids and the other times they are getting plain rainwater. I have the dry form so I don’t need to keep it in the fridge. I do not ever see other people use the dry version, I think it’s not common or something. Thank you for making this video I think I will keep going back to this videos as a reminder how to use it. 👍🏼

Hi Rita 🤩💐 I have not seen anyone use the dry form either, but I can imagine, for longevity, it is a good way to have it. I cannot even get the liquid form here in Spain, so... I cannot tell you about the dry form at all, but if the properties are the same on the package, then the advantage is that you don't have to worry about it going off. I would not want to be without seaweed for my orchids. Thank you so much for watching, Rita! Have yourself a peaceful and beautiful Saturday 🥰🌸

I don't use it really much, once every six months maybe with mature plants, more often with seedlings and younger plants and new bare root plants. I think all the hormones can do more harm than good with mature plants. Now my frankincense trees love it and I give them a big dose in spring when they start their active growth period. Then at three months into their season and another dose three months before they go dormant. Once a month for orchids isn't bad, I mostly forget to add it lol

Todd 😍💐 I have one orchid that I am denying any seaweed for the entire year until it blooms again. It never bloomed well for me, distorted spike and sometimes distorted blooms, so, the first year, I thought... that is nursery care overload,... second year, again and early this season ...again! Now.. I am not exactly starving it from any other fertilizer, but no seaweed and lets see what it does come Feb '22. My first year, when all the orchids came in new, I was all over them with seaweed, but... have now piped down radically compared to the first year. I love the stuff but fully get it that there are facts about it out there which also prove the opposite. Thank you, Todd, for taking the time to watch and leave me a comment! So very much appreciated, and... I get to wish you a great rest of your day 🥰🌸

HI there 🤩💐 I have heard about there being opposing opinions regarding seaweed. I did make the mistake of thinking more is best, and had a few weird things happening in my collection (let's see if the funky Lou Sneary will behave differently in year 4 😅) I will never not use seaweed. This was a great question posed by Paige... the difficulty I have sometimes, is to formulate why I do what I do, so I really appreciate your feedback and comment. By the sounds of it, I made sense 😅😬 doesn't mean that everyone will be made a convert, but, as long as I made sense, as to why it is magic for me and I did not sound like I was stumbling over my words, I am glad. Good evening! I won't go into the chemistry of things, I don't have as much knowledge as I'd like, although truth is hormones do help a lot. There's a very prevalent method using willow "tea", because it contains natural rooting hormones (in particular Indolebutyric acid or IBA) and I've used it quite a bit to a great success in the past. But as with other things (and I think the same could be said about the seaweed extract), it's all about balance. When one applies hormones that promote growth, the plant needs to have enough nutrients and especially Calcium and Magnesium (which you supplement separately). Because calcium makes the growths and roots sturdy and there is this prevalent thought based on observation that a lot of people don't supply enough. Which combined with growth promoters can lead to weak new growths and weaker roots when there's not enough nutrients or Cal/Mag. It can also slightly increase the "hunger" of the plant. It's interesting to see how well it works for you. The only thing I personally used successfully was as I mentioned the "willow tea" (although it needs to be very dilluted, it's very acidic, because it's an acid that causes root growth and it can easily burn roots if used excessively instead of promoting roots) and when promoting more growth from the roots, tannins from tea (with various success based on black/green/white tea used) are good, they create nice environment that promotes root growth with kinda ideal pH. Anyway I want to thank you for doing research into the hormones and explaining why and how. I'm sure it can help others. Have a great evening!

🌸🥷🏼 SnowDragonka San! 🤗🤩💐 good evening indeed! Almost burning the midnight oil here, but, going to squeeze the good evening in, because anything past midnight, and, I would have to say good morning, no? 😅 I have rooting powder from the willow tree, but I honestly have never used it... not for orchids, not for cuttings, but the ingredient is willow. There will be a new playlist with all the things that I use and why I think they are good for the orchids, plus, combo videos, so, it will take a while to complete the series, but I am working on it, because, you are absolutely right, touching on the point about balance. This request for why seaweed from Paige, has now had a domino effect in my mind... why anything at all? 😅 I find seaweed so interesting because of the hormones 😬 Thank YOU so very much for watching my vanilla video for seaweed. I don't want to get too complicated with these kinds of videos, because, we are hobby growers and some things just go over my head, confuse me etc, and I can imagine that, it could be the same for others out there. Anyhoooo, working on the next video and then the next, and then we mix things up! 😅 have a great start to Thursday 🌸🥷🏼 thank you for your very informative comment! Oh my…. I thought I was taking pretty good care of my orchids but now I realize I haven’t. 😢watering I’ve done pretty well with this summer but fertilizing not so much. But I’m learning more thanks to your wise information. I do have organic seaweed fertilizer but it’s in dry powder form. You put it in water, stir, and let sit for an hour. Like worm tea. i was wondering if it was the same as the extract. One more question, we are heading into fall here but quite a few of my orchids are sending out new growths and /or still have growing roots. Is it too late to dose them with the seaweed? All of my orchids are in the house if that makes a difference. Thank you again for all of your knowledge and the time you take to pass it on to us all! So much to learn! 😊

Hi Trish 😍💐 Thank you so very much for your feedback, Trish 🤗 know that, even without fertilizing the orchids can grow just fine, ... the fertilizer and supplements are there to help them grow better 😃 and absolutely! The powder form has the same benefits, with the only exception that you don't have to store it in the fridge 😅 Keep going with your orchids... you can still apply seaweed to any orchid that is in active growth, incl. roots kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZ2zqmSCgLJnick this video is about seasonal orchid care, where I go into more detail about what to do when. If you have not seen it, then it may be an eye opener and a fun one to be able to follow as per what your orchids are doing, what time of year 😉 being indoors, makes a world of difference and ... more fun during the colder months of the year, because, our orchids actually grow when they want to and not any other plants that are outside. They don't know any other seasons, except their own. I appreciate you supporting the channel, and letting me know that the content is of value, thank you so much! I use it at slightly less than half recommended strength twice a month rather than full recommended strength once a month. I’d be interested to know your thoughts (good or bad) on this! Thanks again!

Hi Barbara 🤗💐 thank YOU so much for watching and for your kind feedback! I am glad that nutrient videos are of interest to you, because, the question from Paige regarding seaweed has had a domino effect. I am going through my products and making separate videos on them, as a reference, and then separate videos on why I combine certain products and when. Which will all go into a playlist of it's own. Your comment is encouraging, that the videos on my other products will also be of interest, so thank you for that. What you are doing, sounds fine, seeing as you are going less than half already. Just one question, do you apply it on orchids that are resting? Or not in active growth? That would be my only thought to consider, not giving those orchids any seaweed, unless they are in active growth on the root front, or new growth developing at the base. As these do not always happen at the same time. The example I showed with the active root tips, outside of the pot, that orchid is not growing any new growths atm, but I am applying seaweed. Visa versa, if there are new growths and no new roots, I apply seaweed. But if an orchid is resting, I don't. So...just wanted to point that out, in case it is something that could pertain to your collection and when you apply seaweed. Thank you once again for watching! Leaving me a great comment! Have a wonderful day 👍🏼🌸

Daniel, hi!! 🤩💐 that moss is a rarity in my collection.... hardly seen anymore 😅 you are right, they would never encounter seaweed as such in nature, but, they have the hormones that seaweed has.... and that is what I call the magic behind why its good stuff. Same hormones, as a little boost, nothing that the orchid doesn't already produce on it's own. Everything in moderation, and you will see... I am sure your psychopsis is going to respond. Give it seaweed one / week for the first month and then one a month from then on. Not that you are going to OD it, but you are going to signal it's own hormone make up to get a move on! Let me know in any video how things go! Is it hot enough where it lives? Getting good light? The light is important to help the orchid understand it is go time! Especially psychopsis!! Thank you so much Nina!! Having you tell me helps so much more then trying to read the stinking labels. My eyesight has gone the way of the dodo’s 🦤. Do you use a particular measuring cup? What kind of Ph meter do you suggest getting? Does the Ph level dictate the amount of seaweed?
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nicole 😍💐 I use 1tbsp / US gallon, which brings my water to 40ppm. Whichever brand you choose to go with, test the Total Disolved Solids (TDS) with the gadget, and then again as you add the seaweed. This way, you have a base number which you add to when you add seaweed (or any fertilizer for that matter). So, let's say your water had a TDS of 20 ppm, after adding your seaweed, it should be 60 ppm. I hope that makes sense. Any of the more economical pH meters that you see on amazon will do the trick US - amzn.to/3tqatY6 here is a link that should take you to a pH meter similar to mine, or.. you can browse from the suggestions. But, no need to spend $$ on them. For our purposes the conventional cheaper makes will do just fine. Same with the TDS meter. US - amzn.to/3gftNDC the pH level does not dictate the amount of seaweed. It's importance is for nutrient absorption no matter how much or little seaweed you were to add 😃 I hope I am answering your questions adequately. keep asking if I did not do so and we can keep going until I am able to explain things properly 😬 thank you so much for watching, Nicole and taking the time to leave a comment, ask questions! 🌸

Hi Nina! 😇🌸 Great video, great information. Thank you. Knowing when to use really helps. My liquid seaweed extract doesn’t really affect the TDS very much but it definitely darkens the water 🤷‍♀️ . Is there a right or good sequence to combining different fertilizers or supplements? 🥼🥽🔮Say, if I’m adding seaweed extract and Cal Mag, which is added first, second, etc. Or adding silicone with fertilizer? I know you’re not a scientist 🥼but do you have a theory 🧐 or suggestion even, or does it really matter. Or maybe, don’t combine these things in one feeding but do these individuallly! Thank you for considering my question. Have a great day lady! 🌸🌸🌸

Number 5!! 🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🤸🏼‍♀️🙌🏼😍💐 thank you for your positive feedback! So... maybe your seaweed doesn't have many of the trace elements? If you would like to send me a pic of your label by email, close up? That is strange that it does not affect your TDS. Interesting! There is in actual fact a good sequence of combining fertilizers with supplements. Paige's request has created a domino effect, so... watch this space 😅 but, let me answer your questions to the best of my ability here. Combining fertilizers with supplements... not a problem if one is synthetic and the other is organic, or organic with organic. Never combine synthetic with synthetic. So, I would never put silicone in a fertilizer mix, that will always be administered separately. Seaweed and CalMag, it makes no difference which comes first. BUT, if you were to use Epsom salts as your Magnesium source, then it must be dissolved completely first and added first before adding the Calcium component and adding the seaweed. Magnesium has a tendency to bind itself to anything and everything and create a sludge if it isn't dissolved first. That is why CalMag comes with chelated iron... it separates the Magnesium molecules from the calcium molecules (acts as a buffer) to avoid the binding and rendering the product useless. I hope I am making sense. If you use anything organic mixed with synthetic, don't store it! Finish the batch same day, maybe extend to next day, but never longer than that, because the characteristics will change with time and then you don't know what the nutrient solution is doing. 1 day use, no more than 2 if you happen to have mixed too much for one day. Let me know if what I am saying makes sense, or if you have any further questions OR, if I did not answer your questions properly and misinterpreted 😬 thank you so much for watching, Joy! And for your comment / questions!! Have a beautiful day 🌸

@@joyrevert817 anything that is produced or manufactured as a fertilizer is synthetic. MSU, Jacks.... in Europe, Rainmix, you get organic fertilizers derived from organisms and poop from penguins or bats (guano) the rest... synthetic. CalMag is synthetic and that is why it is ok to mix it with organic because they won't clash (again, best practice is, immediate use). Because synthetics have 'stuff' in them to make sure that all nutrients release at the right time and evenly balanced, they can change the characteristics of the organic components over time. I hope that makes sense. Mix a synthetic with a synthetic, and then the components start to interact in a way that each product would not do if used on it's own. You can store a synthetic fertilizer batch for a week or more, but 'who has that kind of space' 🤣 anything organic needs to be used up asap, especially if temperatures are high. Like, if you put butter out on your counter and have the sun on it, it will change it's characteristics and go rancid after some time. Same with anything organic, and that is also why, its best to store those in the fridge. I am glad that your orchids are doing well... all this can sound totally unnecessary, but it would be a shame to do something and not get the best benefits out of it. Or, have to spend more money because it has gone off and isn't useable anymore.

Hi Nina, a couple of questions about how to use it. I was using Orchid Focus Ultra which I think is a seaweed type extract in addition to their Grow formula. When measuring the tds at the amount they recommend using, the ppm didn't change at all from what it was with just the Grow solution but the surface roots on Phals were turning brown. I don't know if this was burning or staining so I stopped using it. Now I've recently changed to Rainmix. Should I feed with seaweed on its own or add it to the Rainmix until the tds increases say from 200 to 240ppm or should I drop the amount of Rainmix so the total is still 200?
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Carole 🤩💐 thank you for watching and your questions! The roots turning brown can be from staining, but, if they are shrivelling at that area as well, not firm anymore then it is a burn because the tissue was compromised. Staining is something that will happen even if the concentration is diluted, when the air dries the aerial roots faster than the velamen can absorb it. That is why a lot of people say to, first mist the roots and then fertilize. I am impartial to misting the roots before fertilizing. The orchid will absorb nutrients regardless of having wet roots first or not. In the case of phals, are they mounted? If so, I would mist the roots, then fertilize and keep away from a fan, so that the solution has time to be absorbed. If in doubt, or a fan is needed because there are other orchids around that need the air flow, then I would go back and flush the roots that came in contact with the solution before they have a chance to completely dry. If the phals are potted up, then use the submerge pot in solution watering method, and only fill the solution just below the level of the roots exposed at the surface. Let me know if your roots are still plump where the staining is, because it may just be a simple case of staining. Doesn't look nice, but no harm to the roots or the orchid. You can add your seaweed to the RainMix and take your total ppm to 240. This way your fertilizing strength remains the same and you supplement with seaweed. I would not do this at every watering though. If this makes sense... please let me know, and especially, if it doesn't make sense or you have any further questions that my reply may have brought up 🤗🤗 this can be a rabbit hole... even if, for example, for the time being you do not have questions but further down the line. Ask under any video of the day, it doesn't have to be this one. 👍🏼 hope some of this helps 😬🙏🏼

Hi Cherrell😍💐 it is so good to see you again! I hope that you are doing well 🫶🏼 as long as your product does not smell like something coming out of a decaying swamp with a seriously offensive rotting smell, then you are ok to use your kelpmax. I don't know if you stored it in the refrigerator all this time, but that would be advisable so that it doesn't go bad moving forward. I have had KelpMax in the refrigerator for months, without using it, and it was just fine. IF your product looks to have broken down and isn't an even color anymore, but the components show up a little spotty, tiny black dots, meaning it has separated, as long as it doesn't have the nasty smell of rot / decay, you can still use it. SOME of it will still be effective and I would not double the dosis, even if it has separated. The little black spots are concentrated seaweed that has split from the liquid, but it is still seaweed, so no need to change the concentration as per what you would normally do. I hope that this was helpful and if you are not sure about what you are seeing based on what I described, then please let me know what your KelpMax looks like 👍🏼 it should smell like the sea. Some don't like that smell, but that is not what I am referring to when I say offensive smell. Old flower vase water nasty smell is more along the lines of what I am referring to, as a reference. That is when I suggest to throw it away and not use it 😬 thank you so much for revisiting this video and for your question / trust in me. I hope you are having a beautiful day, Cherrelle 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Especially on cattleya orchids, the older leaves will turn opaque as they age because with the maturity of the growth, the outer cuticle also hardens off. This helps the orchid to conserve the moisture loss in the event of environmental stressors. The new growths will always be shiny because they are in their growth phase, and at this stage they are more vulnerable for all kinds of attacks from pests, because their cuticle is not fully developed yet. Once the new growth matures, eventually it will turn opaque again. I hope that this puts your mind at rest 👍🏼 let me know if you have any further questions, in the meantime, I hope you are having a great weekend and once again, welcome 🫶🏼❤️🌸

👍🏼 definitely!! And guess, what... that is why we do it! No matter how long I have grown orchids and what I feel I know about them, there are some shockers that make me question 'what am I doing wrong?' So... 😅 it never ends but it is wonderful even if painful at times!! 🫶🏼

How do you translate 40 parts per million in milliliters per liter of water? Thank anyone who might help me.

Hi Iolanda😍💐 welcome! I have not seen you here before, so a warm warm welcome and a big thank you for being here, for watching and your question!! Much appreciated 🫶🏼 may I ask if you are asking translate 40ppm into another measurement or 1 liter based on this being the metric reference. I do apologize that I did not do any conversion in this instance. I try to be extremely mindful of always converting metric measurement references into US equivalents, but I must have missed that in this instance. Thank you for bringing that to my attention!! I don't want to answer your question based on an assumption and hope to hear back from you 🫶🏼 hope you are having a wonderful week and once again, welcome ❤️🌸

Thank you for such a warm welcome! Yes, I’m new here. Based on your videos I’ve been testing lava rock with my cattleyas and so far I’m very excited about the results! Here in Brazil we have metric system and the dosage usually comes in milliliters of the substance per liter of water (if liquid) or grams if powder. We don’t have the gadget you show in the video. So, here Iam bothering you with my question. The videos and the knowledge you share are precious! Thank you very very much. 🌷

@@iolandaspinosa1138 oh wonderful!! You are from Brazil!! 🙌🏼 OK, so, without any measuring device and no matter the amount of water you may even want to use in future, start slowly with half a teaspoon and see the color of your water. It should have the color of a weak tea. Like a breakfast tea. If you get it a little darker than the weak tea color, don't worry. The color of the water just shouldn't be dark brown. You should still be able to see the bottom of your container you are preparing to put seaweed in. 👍🏼 allow me to also thank you for watching all previous videos and for your kind feedback. I am.so so pleased that you are seeing great results with your cattleyas in lava rock 🙌🏼 best feedback and thank you for letting me know 🥰
