OMG!! Watched these videos all morning. Did practice swings in front of the mirror, and then went to the range. Forced myself to make good backswing and begin falling forward when the club was parallel to ground about halfway through the backswing. Amazing ball striking!! Love the sound of the club striking the ball before the ground. Wow. Thanks. It’s counterintuitive but wow!

Little red book just great. A very wise man, who very successfully worked with many top pros, shares his wisdoem and thoughts of a good swing based on feelings. And that's the challenge still to date, despite all the numbers (trackman) and angles (video): give the students a feel for doing the right things. And that's a very individual task.

This video caught my attention about 3 months ago: "THE MAGIC MOVE" started me watching you guys and alot alot alot of garbage statements other coaches say was proven to be wrong or at least not relevant to success in the golf swing. Making simple changes, along with understanding the reason for the magic move has simplified my swing and i have made major improvements (i have watched just about all of you vids). My carry avg has increased by about 10+ % in all clubs, my smash factor has increased by and average of .06, I am making better contact and compressing the ball more consistently and more helpful than all that!!! i'm more accurate and predictable with my irons and woods (metal). Your perspective on golf and blending athleticism with the scientific performance of proven results (pros swings) is invaluable !!!

This is a great demonstration. After working on getting more hip rotation in my swing I was struggling with only being able to swing out to in and only hitting fades and slices. I couldn't draw the ball to save my life. Earlier timing of lowering the arms very early in the downswing completely fixed this for me. I think that because I was rotating without moving my arms down it was moving my arms in front of my body too much from where I couldn't possibly hit an in to out path.

I played with a 2-handicap player this past Saturday. WOW?! I carry a GHIN 13.8 handicap and I have to say its night and day his swing and mine. The main difference? IMO - His speed and position at impact. The key link? His rotation and speed through impact. His incredible accuracy was impressive. His drives dead straight - 270 plus yards. His Irons pinpoint accuracy. Each swing (every club used) looked identical. The swing was compact and efficient. The key to his consistency from what I saw playing side by side - for 18 holes? His ability to lower his right arm / elbow just enough to whip the club on plane while clearing his hips with lightning speed. I was inspired and now seeing this vid - the light bulb has come on. I will now practice the "magic move" until I can repeat it without thinking. I need to do what that 2 handicapper did last weekend. Inspired!

Very helpful tip (thank you Harvey 😀), especially for us older guys. Combined with your video where you explain that the time difference between any of the moves is approaching zero, this video is saving my back and producing solid contact. Slow swingers trying to get faster, older golfers, seriously take note. If you move everything close to simultaneously, you vastly reduce the torque that can hurt you. You can literally separate ribs by swinging too hard.

Great stuff, guys! Thanks! QUESTION: At 8:20 Shaun shows what happens after the Pennick drill... how the hips turn and the club is delivered to impact. How do the hips turn? Do they pivot around the center of the pelvis? Around the left hip socket (so that the left hip stays stationary and the right hip comes swinging around)? Or, less likely, around the right hip socket and the left hip goes swinging back away from the target?

This move really is magic and you guys have great stuff. I just want to mention that when the practice move is being demonstrated that his head is moving forwards (targetward) but not in the particular rep where he actually strikes the ball which is the way that it should be done. It would be very important to note for less accomplished golfers that the head never moves forward in great ball strikers before the ball is actually struck unless it has moved backwards in the backswing. If the head moves forwards during the early downswing when it never went backwards in the backswing then it would have to snap backwards before impact which would be very difficult and would slow down the swing. I know that you guys know this and that the head movement was unintentional for emphasis, but I thought that it might confuse certain golfers. Since there is always rotation during this "magic move", more of the weight ends up forward of center because the lead side of the body moves back towards it's original address position. So the trick is to take advantage of this and transfer the weight without moving the head forwards which creates a very powerful center for rotation for the rest of the swing.

Lots of good here as always, but one thing I'd add: Harvey was adamant that the move of the right elbow (really an undisturbed movement of both arms and club, when you see it) was definitely to be made with driving or "rotating" the upper body at all. It's probably true that there's always going to be some small amount of rotation early in the downswing, but he was getting at the need to avoid dominating the downswing with the shoulders, especially early on. It's a direct link to John Jacobs' insistence that the most significant in-swing factor that a good player has to work out is the relationship between the arms-and-club swinging and the turning of the shoulders and torso. Obviously both of those categories of elements have to work, but each player has to work out the feel for what it's like for the arms to swing from one side of the body to the other while the hinges themselves are moving. But anyway...it was vital to the "magic move" concept that the elbow was to be "returned to the side" while nothing else in particular other than the targetward bump of weight was happening. My daughter really copped onto this feel at one point in her early development as a player when, in answer to a question about what the hands should be doing at the start of the downswing, I said "nothing at all." It's like the light bulb went on, and at 14 she was absolutely popping it out there. In fact, we used a version of the MM earlier, when she was a real star in softball. She had her best hitting days when she really hooked into the feel of starting toward the pitched ball with the trail elbow down and leading. It put her on that Ted Williams slightly-ascending plane, and skinny girl hit it a helluva long way. ;-)
@toddlittle9263 жыл бұрын
A1 lesson as always... patience to let the arms drop or fall initially from the top of a backswing to a shallowing plane is challenging for most golfers. I find it has to be groved repetedly for consistency.

I couldn't agree more. I think the greatest disservice to the golf swing development that Ben Hogan ever did was to refer to the so-called 'free ride'. That is, the lowering the arms/hands, trail elbow (whatever way one chooses to describe it) as a 'result' of the shift to the left and initial rotation in transition. There's no such thing. you can move to the left and rotate with your arms going virtually nowhere. What happened in Hogan's case (my supposition) is that he practiced this coordinated move so often that it became second nature and so he no longer had to intentionally move his arm/handle, elbow down); it just happened. But it was trained to do so; it did not occur as an unavoidable response of pressure shift and rotation. How many golfers do you see who have expected this to happen naturally with their hands 6 inches or so outside their trail leg at delivery position? Almost all of my students who stall so that their arms catch up with their body, do so precisely because they do not intentionally work to link the left side pressure shift and modest rotation in transition with the reconnection of the trail arm to the body. The teacher I worked with on my own game who emphasized this move more than any other -- though without reference to Pennick, and as part of an overall distinctive approach to the full swing was Mac O'Grady. People pick out a lot of things as distinctive of O'Grady's teaching in the MORAD system, but there is nothing more basic then the transition which has two parts: moving the two centers (sternum and mid pelvis) forward a couple of inches while reconnecting the pressure points between trail arm and right side; and the bulk of the body rotation comes after that.
@Jackisback316454265 жыл бұрын
You said: "How many golfers do you see who have expected this to happen naturally with their hands 6 inches or so outside their trail leg at delivery position?" You are talking about me, here, as I have struggled with the full swing for the past 40 years. It shows up quite obviously on slow motion video. The fact is that you can "lag" things way too much, even if your overall swing motion is in the proper sequence. I have finally just started to fix it by watching this KZbin Channel along with Russell Heritage's channel.

Another great video guys. Interesting Mike when you say 'there's nothing new in golf', I'd agree with that, it just seems to be the same old things just wrapped up differently. With regards the idea of practicing the 'pump drill', can I ask, as this is an example of an 'internally focused' drill i.e paying attention to a body part. How do you think this works compared to an 'externally focused' drill i.e just feeling where the club is in space and letting your body react naturally to this as suggested by the Canadian coach Ron Sisson?

Donald Morrison try the quarterback throw I speak of at the transitional top of your swing. Your magic trail elbow will get everything moving in sequence during your entire swing. It crazy magic; but I swear you will never need lessons again. Cheers

@@thomasfraser9072 Can you explain the quarterback throw or point me in the right direction?
@truongpham64054 жыл бұрын
@@donaldmorrison2585 i believe you are supposed to have recentered at the top of the backswing. The magic move is, then, you at the same time do 3 things: SHIFT past center, ROTATE (so left shoulder is down and around) and LOWER the trail arm. Appreciate if Shaun and Mike @Athletic Motion Golf could confirm this understanding. Thank you.

Great video, thx! Just to make sure I’m understanding correctly, it’s a pump down with the arms to parallel, then rotation of the body brings the club through to release and finish?
@AthleticMotionGolf2 жыл бұрын
The play-by-play with the arms is the right elbow lowers straight away as it straightens. Both gotta happen. Then the turn brings everything in front like you're used to seeing in good swings.

I'm not that long off the tee but I am consistent. What I have the most problem with is taking a divot. Do you have a drill to address this. Would love to see it and maybe a link to download it for future use.

Good question. We’ve got nearly 40 years of combined experience with 3D and have been doing it long before we started making videos. So since doing videos not much has changed because the data hasn’t changed. But looking way back on the things we were taught and assumed were correct… a number of those things have changed since being able to compare them to measured data.

Thanks for this reminder of an important fundamental. A question: should my weight be 50/50 at the top? I've been taught to start shifting weight to my front side when my arms reach chest height in the back swing and to shift a majority of my pressure to my front foot at the top. I'll appreciate your comments on this.

I also been taught to be already with my weight front when @ the top but a USGA Pro & rebuilt my swing around that (it took 1.5 years @ the range ;-) and like that a lot. Much easier to open hips & detach hips from shoulders for me. And it's a big simplification in the swing IMO since you don't need another "timing just right" with the weight shift. This hand dropping tip is actually very hard to do I find, it's a mixture of making sure the club comes up steep enough, grip stays neutral @ top and the right amount of flattening when dropping while you can't force the club with your hands. What helps me is to think that I want to let the club fall into a "single shoulder plane" to freely swing through the ball (another great AMG video where they compared shoulder work of pros with ams), that seems to put all the variables in the correct place I can really go after the ball.
@conj11244 жыл бұрын
I don't know but if your golf swing sequence is correct this move comes naturally and you don't have to over think it. Thanks for the video.

Very interesting but I get confused ! In one of your other videos you talk about pros accelerating their hands early . How can you lower the club slowly and accelerate ?

Thanks for another great video. Do you think this move can also help you keep your lag? Or not cast.

This is all that Ben Hogan talked about in his 5 golf fundamentals 40yrs earlier, not trying to take anything away from Harvey, but Ben can be seen on Ed Sullivan, and Shells world of golf back in the late 50s early 60s doing the pump drill

You are right, but remember, Harvey was older than Ben Hogan and played with him a lot, before, Hogan wrote his book. It took an age to persuade Harvey to have his " nots" put together, that then formed the Little Red Book.
@MarioMartinez-ff5ph5 жыл бұрын
@@chrismayor5147 I don't know too much about Harvey, other than a couple of golf digest articles and 1 youtube video, but if he and mr Hogan were good friends that's good enough for me, since I consider Ben the greatest golfer that ever lived

Been thinking for a while looking at many different magic move videos, and it is more fundamental... is Golf an Impact/Contact or Swing Sport ? Maybe that clarifies where the focus should be ?
@AthleticMotionGolf5 жыл бұрын
We see more ams focus on impact and more pros focus on swinging.
@thomasfraser90725 жыл бұрын
Golf is a 'throw sport'. Forget about the ball altogether. We should simply think of the club head being thrown around it's circular path at the transitional start of our downswing. We use our magic trail elbow to start the throwing of the club head in the same manner a quarterback throws his football. Our body will respond on its' own if we allow it to. Cheers

@@thomasfraser9072 Athletic Motion Golf "Athletic Motion Golf 2 days ago There's a number of things that get talked about a lot that don't really happen in the swing.😉" When throwing the Club, obviously optimum velocity should be where club is released... while it should be at ball impact if you are playing Golf. No wonder so many are confused by all this trendy nonsense... where one minute it is throwing a club and next minute using an axe or hammer :) The average Golfer would improve his score significantly; the aim of the game; with a 'Half Swing' and instead focusing on IMPACT... because Golf is an Impact Sport... believe it or not :)
@thomasfraser90725 жыл бұрын
Roland Becker Golf is indeed an impact swing for sure as I use my magic trail elbow to throw the club head along it’s circular path. The club head then impacts the still ball at the bottom of the circular arc where the club head meets the ball. Of course I think of none of this as I swing my club simply using Harvey Penick’s Magic Trail Elbow
