Well explained. I think an additional, and powerful benefit of using a flirt pole is helping a dog with impulse control. By stopping the game quickly (like putting it over your shoulder as you showed), your dog can learn to go from highly aroused to less aroused on their own. That is particularly useful when working with a dog who has a tendency to be reactive in certain situations. Good work.
@olivehound68997 жыл бұрын
totally agree, works well for sighthound breeds whos instinct to chase is often hard to curb! they’ll get to practice listening to you when they’re in a state of high arousal and learn to cool off quick - Handy for dogs who are working on impulse control. You can never be 100% with them but i found this to work well with my whippet although she doesn't come from working stock and doesn't have a massive prey drive compared to others I know. Zeke I would like to see a sighthound breed video, they are breathtaking, interesting dogs!

Both my Belgian Malinois and Pembroke Corgi (both rescues) love the flirt pole! It’s a great tool to help keep them both in excellent physical condition and happy as it’s so much fun for them. I like it especially for those cold, wet winter days that I don’t want to take them out for long walks or let them outside too long. It’s safe to do inside the home (you may need to move some furniture out of the way) or even in the garage. Our corgi is nine years old, but looks and acts like a two year old!

Have you ever encountered any aggression to smaller animals or people do to this training? I want to train and tire my dog out but iam afraid of giving them a bad habit of chasing small objects as we have ducks and small animals.
@ConnorLipke2 жыл бұрын
@@luxtrichoma8458 Prey drive is largely genetic and innate. If your dog has no drive, it won't chase small animals, if they do, they will. This toy won't make it better or worse, it just allows them to express it.

Flirt poles are magic... I work my Presa Canario 3 times a week with a flirt pole. In the last 3 months he's gotten super muscular. I also take him to the beach once a week to run and play in the sand. He's 1yr 6months and 150lbs

Likely fat and obese and is suffering from problems that come with a fast growth. People think its cool to have your dog weighing as heavy as possible at a young age. I'm wondering if this would increase her prey drive as we already have cats she is very tempted to play with and has been increasingly interested in other small animals we see on walks and wouldn't want to encourage this but maybe they have some toys to put at the end that don't resemble such things.

@sapphireotaku33998 жыл бұрын
This is from forever ago, but incase someone else has the same question. I'd say no. The reason this is used for schutzhund is because it builds drive. Specifically, prey drive. The dog learns when they chase something that runs they get an adrenaline rush and get to "catch" their prize (in the case of a schutzhund dog the "bad guy" or sleeve for a dog just trained for the sport itself. In the case of lure... obviously the lure.) I'd say either use an alternative means of exercise that doesn't envolve prey drive like running or swimming, and try to break the dog of that aggression through counter contitioning and lots of exercise (frustration can cause a dog to chase) or simply don't have the dog around cats if it's genuinely attacking (and always keep it leashed in public. I'm sure your dog is a fine dog, but most often this drive is instictual and that drive isn't necessarily limited to cats. Small dogs, and for some dogs even running children could seem like a fun thing to chase, and I don't think anyone wants that. One of my dogs chases my cats, but she won't hurt them. She even play bows and gently wags at them (stupid pup wants to play XD). I simply gave the cats escapes (shelves, cat trees, sunny seats, a cat door, etc.) so the cats can feel more comfortable and have safe places if the dog really bothers them, and I discourage the dog fro chasing, but there's no need to rehome any of them because of a little miscommunication. :)

I agree! You better have a damn well obedient dog before you work to increase its prey drive. Potentially dangerous otherwise
@CasuallyFeral3 жыл бұрын
This is why you train them well on impulse control. Think of how you can use this to toggle for them instead -- you can use this sort of thing to teach them "Leave it," and to walk past it when on leash. If anything, it's very healthy to teach them WHEN to engage their prey drive -- because they will always have that instinct! Avoiding teaching them about their prey drive at all is when you get dogs that rush and hurt people, or themselves.
