Ali Hamidi from One More Cast has released the new "Magic Twig". So much hype has been around this, people saying that it is unsafe for the fish. I thought I would get one for myself, and see what its really like out on the bank in a real life scenario.

The same noddys that use a £200+ bite alarm, the same noddys that use clutched and geared reels, the same noddys that use the latest carbon fibre rods… In reality, nobody really needs any of these to catch fish and yet, guess what? EVERYONE does… I guess you’re still using an old split cane rod with a plain old reel without a bait runner/clutch and a washing up bottle top / snapped tree twig as a bite indicator? Oh wait, no, no you’re not… you’re using all of the above 🙄🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️ Now, I’m not advocating the use of this device, just picking holes in your comment 👌😂

Nicely little review buddy but you’re missing a big point. It doesn’t hook the fish for you at all. It needs the fish to hook itself for it to trigger. So there for it’s pointless. The arms are also a massive factor in weed and a massive no for me. Clear open waters you’d be absolutely fine but again it’s not needed so save yourself some money and invest in a decent file and eye glass. That will get you far more fish on the bank

It depends on the byelaws. They're not universally banned but some byelaws go beyond the government's nationwide policy. The Thames has this clause: 'In the Thames byelaw area...You must not use any device that is designed to hook a fish automatically.' Hard to argue The Magic Twig isn't one of those!

The safety issues go beyond that though. If weed and debris is caught at the base of the wings, the force isn't pulling against the wing edges, but against the plastic joint and that isn't going to bend out. There's a thread about it on the fishing forum 'Fishing Magic'. A member's got a picture of him hanging 5kg of weight off the wings and they've not bent back enough to release it. That's unsafe. It's risking a fish building up weed as it runs, but not being able to release it if the mainline fails. Secondly, the spring mechanism gives only a tiny amount of movement for the fish to move if the wings get snagged in the net. If the fish gets it snagged high up, its own weight will stretch out the elastic out, regardless of any thrashing around. It's also worth checking byelaws. The Twig's technology is explicitly banned on the Thames: 'In the Thames bylaw area...you must not use any device that is designed to hook a fish automatically.' I think from everything I've seen, as a committee member I'll be recommending we ban it on our waters. There are enough bad anglers out there who don't pay attention to their rods or alarms. The last thing we need is a gadget to guarantee a fish can't free itself if a dopey angler's dropped off to sleep with their alarm volume turned down! Great video presentation though.

@@jay_hockley1533I'm sorry, but that's a load of bollocks. Justifying the use of a hazardous item of tackle with an example of whataboutery crosses the line. I'm a carp angler with over 35 years of experience. The magic twig is not a new concept at all. In fact, the first spring loaded elasticated device for fishing, actually appeared in the 1960s. It never really caught on. It was deemed unethical. Then, in the 1970s, Kevin Maddocks, one of the pioneers of modern carp angling, designed a spring loaded device. However, after using the device, Maddocks decided it was unethical. Other similar designs cropped up in the 1990s, such as Simon Crow's version. But on showing it to Tim Paisley at Carpworld, and after a discussion on the ethics of such a device, Simon Crow binned the idea. Steve Renyard came up with the Hermit Rig, by using pole elastic. The same concept was used by Gardner Tackle with the Nora Batty Rig. Kevin Nash's Triggalink does exactly the same as the magic twig, but is 100% safer! The carp is already hooked before the magic twig has even been triggered. It's ridiculous! Ali Hamidi is a conman! Take it from me, Ali Hamidi has lost all credibility with the overwhelming majority of experienced carp anglers like myself. Even some of his own mates have said that he's gone too far. I can guarantee if you had even a quarter of the level of experience in carp angling I've gained, you wouldn't even dream of using the magic twig. Fish safety is paramount. I hope that one day you'll understand that - because at moment, you don't.

A contraption to catch anglers rather than fish. That's a hell of a lot of plastic lead clips & rubbish on your line. To expect a beginner to know how to safely use a lead clip is one thing, then that contraption added to it is just asking for trouble. A good simple running rig is all you need.

It's a great idea, but as with many such inventions, the initial model is a little crude albeit effective. Now if you could hide the mechanism inside an inline lead or a feeder... For the lead maybe rotate two halves of the lead to prime an internal coil-sprung mechanism then you'd really could be onto something.

I personally have stopped using a certain hook which was so sharp it cut carps mouths to bits! Those hooks should be banned as a horrific contraption for the damage they cause when playing fish ! This rig may cause more hook ups with people using a more fish friendly hook ! If you actually want the most horrific contraption for carp fishing it's bait alarms and receivers! More fish are done I'm by pissed /stoned up blokes at the weekend going fishing and sleeping through there alarms ! That's my opinion! Don't even start me on Ronnie rigs ( 360rigs ) a broken rig is fish jewelry for life especially if using micro or barbed hooks ( Teflon coated ) the worst due to time taken for them to rust !

"If you are a beginner get on it" last words....hmmmm. Don't want to dis a youngster but you need know what you are doing using advanced rigs and shouldn't really review until you have actually caught a few fish. The trigger strength isnt for fish size so much as needing to avoid being triggered by nuisance fish and bird life. Plus on some waters fish have tougher mouths than on others. It is to avoid situations where wary fish have found they can eject the hook using the lead weight through head shaking. It's those situations where it should come into its own, not so much hungry waters where fish find the bait and tear off with it when feeding in competition. It is another tool but like any you need to give thought about the right situations to use it and be more wary if your water is a heavily weeded one. As for ethics and "self hooking" well that went out of the window the first time we used bolt rigs and heavy leads and no longer needed to strike to set the hook!😊

A nice attempt at a review. I am sure it's your honest opinion. Except you are too young to realise it yet but frankly you cannot talk with any authority about this because of your lack of experience and frankly not having even caught a fish on it. But at least you have understood the basic theory of it may better than most, embarrassingly many of whom are seasoned anglers who show nothing but prejudice and frankly should know way better. I never thought the day would come when "Peter would be guiding Mr Crabtree" how to fish. But here we have it. Soon we will be having pupils giving lessons to their teachers!! Lol Interesting more open minded approach from a young angler though.

@FishWithJay no idea how someone can't see it as a death trap.. you seen the pic of someone hanging 5k of boilie from the arms and they still don't break.. if someone snaps up and the fish can't shake the rig, with that thing attached it's a long and slow death
